I’ve just had a realization that a lot of people are replacing the word “please” with “sorry”

I think “sorry” is teetering on the edge of a filler word (ie.: like, so, um, okay), and that’s no good because it shows a lack of confidence in the general willingness of humanity to do stuff for others. This extra level of apology just assumes that everything one asks for and does is insane and unreasonable, when most of the time it’s not. It also turns into a “boy who cried wolf” situation because, once a mistake does happen, it feels disingenuous. “Sorry” loses its power. What was meant to be an extra precaution actually ends up transforming the word into a common, everyday word, not the special word used to undo real wrongdoings.

I’ve seen myself do this, and I’ve seen plenty of peers do it too. I think we can all benefit from having just a teeny bit more confidence in ourselves. Put “sorry” back in the special box it belongs in, and instead, bring “please” back out—The word made for asking people to do stuff.
