funny how much emphasis tmnt 2003, and especially leonardo, puts on honor and bushido. despite being a ninja. who are. famous for not doing that. he's a ninja the same way monkey d luffy is a pirate.

okay no i thought this too and it turns out we all owe leo an apology

i recently read the bansenshukai, an actual real-world ninja manual that was written during the edo period to preserve knowledge of ninja skills during peacetime, and the first two chapters are completely devoted to teaching "the right mind"

the very first chapter of this 22-scroll-long manual emphasizes that a ninja is a samurai, just one with a very particular skillset, and, outside of missions, should conduct himself as a model samurai. specifically, he should be honest, straight-dealing, respectful, benevolent, not even cracking jokes, completely loyal to his lord (but only to an intelligent and honorable lord who will use him properly!), all sorts of things like that, because otherwise his allies will not be able to trust him.

the author explains that this chapter is the very first one in the manual because, without "the right mind", someone using a ninja's skills is no ninja at all, but a mere burglar. it was extremely obvious, even being translated essentially twice (archaic japanese is difficult for modern japanese speakers to read!), that the author had a huge amount of disdain for burglars and anyone else who would selfishly misuse ninja teachings.

so like. i'm willing to accept that leo applies it too broadly. but he is actually not as absurdly off-base as i've always assumed.

Human spirit this human spirit that—let me tell you the most memorable and impactful movie theatre experiences of my life and why it was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

I waited a few weeks and just went by myself, and it was me and 10 other people in the theatre.

3 preteen boys

4 younger teens, 2 boys and 2 girls

and 2 grandparents with their grandson, who dressed up as Michelangelo

The preteens sat in the row in front of me, and before the previews were even over they were squished together in the same two recliner seats, and one of them looked up to see if they were blocking my view before sitting back down

The teens were in the far corner, apparently having met up for one of their birthdays

And the grandparents and grandson were down closer to the screen

It was already a fun movie and pretty good humor but what got me was the end when we all got up to leave (I was the last one) and every single one of those kids stopped and complimented the little boy's costume and he was so excited and happy and even told me he was gonna be Mikey for Halloween

And I'd been having a rough month and my pain was flaring something awful and my friends and I were fighting, and I left that theatre sobbing because it is so easy to be cruel or dismissive, and people shit on teenagers and preteens all the time but they have so much heart too
