Giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is an invasive herb in the carrot family which was originally brought to North America from Asia and has since become established in the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Northwest regions of the United States. Giant hogweed grows along streams and rivers and in fields, forests, yards and roadsides, and a giant hogweed plant can reach 14 feet or more in height with compound leaves up to 5 feet in width.

Giant Hogweed sap contains toxic chemicals known as Furanocoumarins. When these chemicals come into contact with the skin and are exposed to sunlight, they cause a condition called Phytophotodermatitis, a reddening of the skin often followed by severe blistering and burns. These injuries can last for several months, and even after they have subsided the affected areas of skin can remain sensitive to light for years. Furanocoumarins are also carcinogenic and teratogenic, meaning they can cause cancer and birth defects. The sap can also cause temporary (or even permanent) blindness if introduced into the eyes. If someone comes into physical contact with Giant Hogweed, the following steps should be taken:

Wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and COLD water as soon as possible.

Keep the exposed area away from sunlight for 48 hours.

If Hogweed sap gets into the eyes, rinse them with water and wear sunglasses.

See a doctor if any sign of reaction sets in.

If a reaction occurs, the early application of topical steroids may lessen the severity of the reaction and ease the discomfort. The affected area of skin may remain sensitive to sunlight for a few years, so applying sun block and keeping the affected area shielded from the sun whenever possible are sensible precautions.

He takes a quick look at the deer’s clothes himself and replied, “Your clothes are pretty nice too.”

Straightening the zipper on his jacket he apologized, “I’m sorry if I interrupted your music. I didn’t realize that you were listening to something.”

"Huh? Oh, no, it’s… it’s fine." Sage said, blushing a little bit at the comment the man made towards his clothes. He fiddled around with the cord of his headphones for a little bit before speaking.

"So, What brings you here?"

"Well, I believe that I saw a poster around saying that there was going to be music around here and I thought that it would be a nice function to go to… I’m kind of new around here and I thought that it would help to get more accustomed to the area, too. I’ve never been here before so… y’know, I thought it would be good…"

Noah fiddled his hands together a bit with his gloves on and gives a bit of a smile.

"I take it that you’re probably from around here, though."

"Yeah, I’m from here. The winters get really really cold, but you get used to it." Sage said. He wrapped the cord around his index finger and took a deep breath. "So, where are you from, sir?"

"I'm from a town that's fairly far away. It's not too big, really. I kind of doubt that you'd heard of it. Though, it does seem quite nice here."

Noah took a moment to appreciate how fluffy the snow appeared to be rather than more of a harsh ice before looking back to the deer.

"You're right though, it does feel quite cold today, at least."

Sage removed his headphones, and turned his body to face the rodent. He took a quick look at the stranger’s clothing, eventually putting his gaze back on the man’s red eyes. “Hi,” Sage paused. “Um… I like your clothes.”

Stupid. Sage thought. This guy comes up to you and says hello, and you comment on his clothes. Good going.

  "Well, usually when I tell people that there’s a vacuum powering the machine that they assume that energy in relation to quantum space, which isn’t exactly correct. The removal of things from the system in this four-dimensional plane it reduces the amount of interference with certain other dimensional planes. The crystal helps to utilize the energy from these from transdimensional properties. This is actually connected to a plane that has energy that is created at a certain rate, so, we don’t actually deprive the system of a net energy, exactly."

The idea of new dimensions wasn’t new to him, so there seemed to be a lot of speculation he had to do to make she he understood. If what he was saying was true, he may hold the answer to perpetual energy right in his lab at home.

"So, let me get this straight, the plane that this ‘connects’ to, it actually creates energy? I understand that other planes have different properties of physics, I’ve experienced that first-hand, but to tap into one that actually creates energy is astounding. Then, would that mean that here, there is no conservation of energy if you are constantly gaining it? Or would it still apply because the other universe is part of an outside system?”

It was about time for him to geek talk with someone. There was science to be discussed.

"Well, I'm not exactly the one who developed the system... But, from my understanding, the energy from the extradimensional system has some properties that are different than from here. Most notably, instead at a point where it would normally convert into thermal energy as opposed to mechanical it reverts its structure back to the original plane that it came from."

The young cat smiled and scratched the back of his head, a tad embarrassed that he wasn't more of a wiz at this sort of thing.

  Under the clock was a basement that had different desks and hanging lamps around the walls. One could see piles of notes and drawings scattered about some of the tables while other parts were surprisingly decorated in a lavish manner with intricate metal work designs. One of these pieces was a large glass tube covered at the top and bottom with a crystal inside and wires traveling outside of it to places unseen.

"This is the main generator for the plaza’s clock. It is powered by a Nillith crystal in a vacuum sealed chamber. The crystal helps to convert energy from the empty space in order to be able to power the clock. From our calculations and experiences so far, this has proven to be a very reliable and efficient system for energy production," he narrated.

"Interesting…" Char eyed the crystal in curiosity. "Now, what do you mean by converting energy from empty space? Where does that energy come from, if you don’t mind me asking. From what you’re telling me, it seems you have a perpetual energy device." Deep in thought, he furrowed his brow and stroked the bit of snowy fluff on his chin, gesturing inquisitively toward the chamber. "What’s the drawback to using this? Is there even one?"

His steps echoed within the underground chamber as he approached the container, still stroking his fur, thinking of what possibly could be the drawback. Everything had a drawback, right?

Wearing black cargo pants, something that looks like a leather jacket, and a pair of high boots decorated with several silver buckles sat a mouse beside the deer with white fur and long brown hair, letting out a soft squeak. The snow melted as it touched his head and fur while the warm breath accumulated before his mouth. In a fluid motion, he turned his head toward the cervidae and spoke with a gentle voice, “Hello.”

The sound of hooves crunching against shallow snow and his music filled Sage’s ears. The dulcet tones of the piano slowly playing and echoing, and the faint whining of synths in the background only made his walk in the public woodland park more enjoyable. He stopped in the middle of a clearing and removed his backpack, pulling out a rather large snowmobiling jacket to use as a mat and spread it across the snow.

He sat down and pulled out a plastic bag with a ham sandwich inside of it. He removed the food item and took a bite. “Ah, the ham’s a bit cold.” He said to himself, taking his time to chew and swallow. Suddenly, he felt his right ear twitch. This wasn’t from the music, it had to be from something else.

"Hello?"

Noah nodded to Colleen and vaporized into a amorphous form of black smoke. As he flew towards Corbin, the sun began to get closer to setting, casting the shadows from the trees across the forest floor. Re-materializing before Corbin, the mouse whispered, “You better watch out in the dark.”

Colleen blinked in confusion, ears folding back. He just…? He disappeared??? But… How?

Corbin was just walking casually, leading the way. He was oblivious to what was going on behind him, so he had not heard Colleen and Noah’s conversation, or see Colleen’s confusion and Noah’s disappearing. He was in the middle of looking around the forest when Noah appeared in front of him. He let out a startled yelp, not expecting Noah to suddenly pop out of nowhere and tell him to watch out in the dark. He stopped walking and instinctively griped his sword, but quickly realized that it was Noah and let out a relieved sigh. He looked back to Colleen, making sure that she was fine. She nodded and let out a sigh of relief as well. He turned back to Noah and tilted his head slightly, now curious about how he did that.

"Uh… Ok! But how did you do that Mr. Noah? How did you suddenly poof and appear like that?"

"Well, magic can be quite the complicated thing to explain, what with energy fields and transdimensional space... It's a bit interesting but, I'd have to start you off with the basics really," he let a long pause occur as he walked beside the young boy, gripping onto his sword. "Though, my main point is, one ought to try and be prepared and not simply speak words without meaning. Not that one can be prepared for anything... But, take it that it had been a monster and not me when you had not swung... Do you understand?"

He turned his head toward Corbin to give him a caring smile with a calm look on his face.

  "Well, I’m glad that you’re interested. Not too many people seem to take interest in all the history behind this clock. I mean, of course as its keeper, I do. Luckily, it’s not to hard for just one person because it doesn’t need maintenance all too often… Anyway, why don’t we start down the path in the basement? We can work our way from the bottom where the generator is to the top."

"Excellent! I’d like to see what makes this thing tick!" Char replied with a wink. With the terrible pun, he followed the keeper downstairs, hoping to see what powered this thing.

Looking over at Corbin, Noah began to slowly rise to his feet.

"If there are any monsters, please allow me to take matters into my own hands first," he solemnly requested.

He took several longer strides in his tall, black boots with several buckles now, beginning to catch up with Colleen. The grass seemed a little damp but, not so much as dew could clearly be seen on it.

Before they got close enough to Corbin so that he could hear, Noah leaned over a bit and whispered in her ear, “How much do you worry about your brother?”

Corbin pouted Noah when he said that he would take care of the monsters, though knew that he shouldn’t go against him. He muttered an ‘ok’ and continued walking ahead of them, the soft earth feeling cool under his feet.

Colleen giggled slightly, walking after her twin. She could hear the soft steps of Noah quickly catching up with her and keeping up pace. She flinched slightly when Noah whispered in her ear, his breath making her ears twitch. She frowned a bit, looking up at him with a worried gaze.

“A lot actually, he’s a bit… Hot headed and brash. He’s getting stronger, and most monsters are gone so there isn’t much to worry about but I still do… I guess it’s because i’m older then him and it’s my job to worry haha…" She whispered back, slowing down a bit so Corbin was still a far enough distance away from her twin. He was just looking around curiously, his big blue eyes taking in the familiar sights of the forest. He was always curious, but he never thought about things before he did them, making her worry even more.

“Since he doesn’t think before he acts, we tend to get lost a lot. Although we learn things and make friends, so I guess it’s not all bad… Haha, we should catch up with him before he starts to worry why we are talking so long!”

  A number of minutes had passed, perhaps fifteen. Only silence remained in the clock tower beyond the clicking and clacking of the gears as they turned. In the passing moments, in sync with some of the gentle clatter, footsteps could be heard coming towards Char.

A white cat, about half the size of Char, came behind him as he leaned against the rail and tapped him on the shoulder. He wore a brown vest, with a pair of darker brown pants that let his ankles show above his penny loafers. His eyes had a light blue sheen to them which complimented his gentle face. The light pouring in through one of the windows gleamed off of his short and somewhat wavy turquoise hair.

"Excuse me," he politely inquired, "I don’t mean to interrupt you. You seem to be quite engrossed with what you’re doing. But, I wasn’t sure if you would possibly be interested in a tour."

The cat’s touch jolted Char awake in a surprised jerk. He turned around, a bit embarrassed he had dozed off, and wiped the bit of drool that was left glistening on his face-fur.  

"Oh! Sure! I would love a tour!" He answered the cat, "I’m kinda new to the area and the clock tower really caught my interest. Don’t let my dozing-off fool you, I am… actually… really interested." Once again, he became distracted by all the moving parts and fluidly moved his head about to view the entirety of the place.

  "I’ve already been here before," he stated with his head still down, "It’s old news to me."

Noah leaned back and closed his eyes and tried to position his limbs to a more comfortable position. Letting out a gentle breath, he began to fall asleep in his seat.

Finally giving up on his friend for now, Char continued up the steps, making his way to the top where he was invisible behind the mechanical organs of the tower. 

He leaned over a guard-rail and watched in amusement at the different pieces mashing together. His view shifted from one piece to the next, seeing how it all fit together. One piece turned the next, and then that piece turned the next, and then… that piece… turned the next… With a smile, he rested his head against the railing and drifted off, not bored in the slightest, just relaxed, happy.

Sniffing at the ground a little, Noah arose and shook his head from side to side in slight disappointment.

"I don’t believe that it’s here. Perhaps it may be further down or by a small creek in the forest, somewhere. Don’t worry, though. We’ll find it, eventually. It probably shouldn’t take too long."

He stood up from the ground with a bit of a worried look on his face, gazing into the distance.

Colleen nodded slightly, her face a little disappointed. Though her face lit up almost immediately when Noah assured her that they would find it.

“Well, I think the stream goes farther than this. I’m pretty sure it leads into the Glade… Oh I mean forest. Haha, well, that’s the name of the forest. It used to be filled with monsters, I think it’s where most of the monsters came from; but since Dust came to defeat them, most have left so it’s safe." Colleen said, a confident smile on her face. Since she was dragged around by Corbin so much, she eventually learned many things about the forest. At this time of day, any existing monsters would probably be sleeping.

Corbin’s ears flicked up when Colleen mentioned the forest, he immediately cut in. He wanted to have a say in the conversation too!

“And if there are any monsters, I can easily defeat them! I’ve been practicing a ton!”

Colleen rolled her eyes playfully, beginning to lead the way into the thick forest. She teased him lightly, giggling a bit.

“I’m sure you can Corbin, if there were any monsters to defeat!”

Corbin nudged her, sticking his tongue out playfully before walking ahead. As soon as he was far enough ahead he turned around and pulled out his sword, raising it into the air.

“Heh, you’ll see! All the monsters fear me, thats why they aren’t around!”
