You know what I've discovered that I hate since having kids?

I hate hearing people say to their children "don't come crying to me when it goes wrong," after they've told the children of the almost guaranteed bad outcome of what they're about to do.

Like, you are the person they're supposed to come crying to! You're their home, their safety, their love. It doesn't matter that they went ahead and something went wrong. It doesn't matter that you warned them.

What matters is that it's you that they darn well should come crying to! Who else do you expect them to cry to!?

Let them experience comfort after a mistake. Let them have a conversation about it with you. Let them feel safe enough to come to you when they need to. Because if you go around telling your children "don't come crying to me," then one day, they won't.

And you won't know when something really bad happens. Don't shut them down.
