“I hope everything is to your liking.” Even though Sofia owned El Toro, she liked to go out into the dining area and greet guests. They had live music for the celebrations, making Sofia a little extra anal about things.

        it was foolish of him to lean so heavily over the edge of what lay between them, to hope that something soft would greet him at the bottom. but desperation for any reciprocation of the care he was TRYING to show for her had him swaying in the direction of recklessness, with the weights of risk bearing down on his rigid shoulders.  ‘   it’s not a big deal. if you’d like to rest up before you head home, i have to hop in the shower anyway. you know how to lock up the doors and do the alarms, so...   ’

        not entirely averse to the idea of matching pink butterflies, terrence would never admit it outside their trio of mother, child, and... near nanny at this point. if he were to recognise himself as guardian to anyone in rainier, cairo would be at the top of that list. though to say as much would do no good, and to be seen with pink face paint and a siphoner family  when he SHOULD be with the badicas wouldn’t look right. no matter that this was supposed to be his day off, or that they were his friends. none of it mattered in the end, really.  ‘   don’t think pink’s my colour, huh, ro?   ’  he mumbled to the baby that sunk prawn-like fingers into the fabric of his shirt, pawing for something to squeeze between tiny fists.  ‘   don’t be so dramatic. i see you all the time, anyway. but i’m glad it’s longer, and that i get to spend some quality time with my best friend.   ’

       he’d know her in death. any version of reality in which their souls coexisted would have them running on intersecting lines, clashing and clinging with desperation so as to not be torn apart by fate. or intolerant family members. or WOLVES. as his eyes fell upon her parallel, familiar form, terrence could feel nothing but the burn of static carbon dioxide making a home in the cavern of his lungs; unable to exhale. he was stuck in a movement of reaching out to touch her, a simple tap on the shoulder that rooted his fingertips into her angel bones, and stated his presence to her in the only way that seemed possible. perhaps he said her name, or hello, or mumbled a string of unintelligible phrases, terrence couldn’t tell; not when the sole focus of his attention rested on eyes that were an exact mirror image of his own.

BASIL.

“i honestly feel so elated right now, i feel like a teenage girl who lives in California and has a hot body, and a hot boyfriend, whooo.. need to get me hot a boyfriend,” basil rambled on in his drunk state, how many bottles did he have? he couldn’t count, and the night was barely starting. his movements were erratic and he couldn’t keep a steady balance easily, leaning on the other person for support, he put his arm around the person and leaned his face dangerously close to the other, and continued on, “man, you should try some,” he suggested, his breath reeking of alcohol, “makes you feel like a barbie girl!”  then he threw his head back and let out an abnormally loud laugh.

         ‘   CAN I HELP you?   ’  terrence’s patience had been spread thin across the festivities, a filmy layer ready to split apart and lose its elasticity if another incomprehensible word was uttered by the other. ‘   i’m not understanding any of these references, dude. go home.   ’

❛ ┆ —— ‘ ʟᴏᴏᴋ ᴀᴛ ᴍʏ ʜᴀᴘᴘʏ ʙᴏʏs.      ’      the words were meant only for her, mumbled quietly beneath the roaring excitement of the night. seeing terrence more at ease as he carried cairo through the throng of bodies was comforting. she did worry about his habits, his fixations, his ever present horrid mood - but tonight, at least, he was putting on a display. his counterpart being only a few months old made it easy for the infant to enjoy the events.      ‘      hey, ter, where are we headed? i hope we’re getting our faces painted because i need photographic proof of this.      ’

       his calloused palm gently cupped the curl-covered crown of cairo’s head, allowing drool to soak into the cotton of his shirt in order to protect the bundle of marshmallow limbs. terrence wasn’t particularly fond of the crowds --- too many blind spots and unpredictable risk --- but anna had made the effort to invite him. she was trusting him to hold ro and weave a path through the city’s celebrating population; now was not the time to dwell on things he could not change. ‘   LISTEN... none of that pink, glittery shit. maybe ro and i can match, no?   ’

❛ ┆ —— ‘ ɢᴜɪʟᴛ sɪʟᴇɴᴄᴇᴅ ʜᴇʀ. ᴀɴ ᴇғғᴇᴄᴛɪᴠᴇ gag that kept any words pressed back behind sealed lips, ireland merely nodded numbly. he didn’t have to take care of her. he shouldn’t have in the first place. not when he barely even made the effort to speak to her in the past months of her being back home.      ‘     right,      ’     she croaked out finally, hoarse voice and rough syllables that scratched viciously against the soft walls of her mouth.     ‘     thanks.      ’ 

         his left leg, bent at the knee, was planted on the windowsill by a sock-clad foot. rooted to his spot on the far side of the room, parts of his insides ached to reach out and close the years long distance that gaped wide like a barren canyon between them. but terrence resisted --- she had made herself abundantly clear the night before, and he wasn’t about to worsen the evident hate she felt for him. ‘   you feeling okay? there’s, uh, some water...   ’  he trailed off, resentment directing its way towards himself for his inability to even LOOK at her, rigid muscles gesturing in the general direction of his nightstand.

“Well… I think she seems smart enough not to let that happen again.” Emmy didn’t know if Terrence knew how close she was with Ireland so she chose to leave out the fact that she would look out for her as well. She thought about telling him but that seemed like it would just complicate things.

      ‘   are you guys close?   ’  though it plagued him with unexplored guilt that he did his best not to prod at, terrence --- as with most things regarding his confidant --- knew very little about where exactly she stood with his ex-girlfriend. ‘   do you think you could, like... keep an eye on her? make sure she’s okay? i TRUST you.   ’

       in the space that existed between the end of her question and his inevitable reply, terrence allowed thoughts of their fractured past to steep and soak in his blood, turned to a soft simmer for the sake of avoiding the kind of argument that overwhelmed their better judgement the night prior. from his perch upon the windowsill, gazing out onto the sparse and uniform neighbourhood, he did not have to look at ireland, swathed in his blankets and bed clothes as though they had jumped back in time by four years. he was thankful, in his embarrassment, hidden behind the shadows that the dawn couldn’t quite reach. ‘   you passed out. last night. wasn’t sure if you wanted your parents seeing you like that. i slept in bea--  the guest room, don’t worry.   ’

“YEAH BRO, I’m wearing clean underwear. I am sort of a grown up y’know. You don’t have to keep checking up on me… It’s unnecessary…” He trailed off before letting out a sigh at his brother’s next comment. “Yes, I’m showering regularly. Now I’m gonna hang up because I’m in the middle of the city and people are starting to look at me.” 

      ‘   oh man, that DEFINITELY wasn’t too much information.   ’  leaning his leather clad back against the shop front’s window, terrence regarded the other with a tight, bemused smile and a swift nod of his head. ‘   glad you’re, uh... keeping everything squeaky clean.   ’
