“Please Kit? Pretty please!” Kit sighed as Mina tugged on his hoodie sleeve for what felt like the millionth time. “I wanna go see Los Angeles! Didn’t you live there? It sounds so prettyyyyyy pleasee can we go?” Mina looked up at her older brother with puppy dog eyes, and Kit knew he couldn’t hold out any longer. The Herondale-Gray-Carstairs household had been invited back to LA for Emma and Julian’s wedding, and Kit had . 

It had been over three years since the two had been publicly together. Three years since their parabatai bond had broken. Three years since he had seen or talked to Ty. 

He was conflicted.  Frankly, Kit wanted to go back to LA as much as Mina did. But he and Ty had parted on not-so-great terms, and he didn’t want to hurt Ty again. If hurting himself kept Ty from hurting, Kit would always choose himself. He couldn’t bear the thought of Ty in pain, especially pain caused by him. But no one could resist Mina’s puppy eyes.

“Fine, we’ll go Min-Min.” Mina squealed with happiness and ran off, presumably to tell her parents the wonderful news. Kit chuckled to himself. He knew they would’ve gone regardless, as Jem considered Emma a younger sister. They would’ve let Kit stay behind if he really wanted; his parents were cool like that. But he knew Jem would’ve convinced him if Mina failed. 

Jem knocked on Kit’s bedroom door frame. “Kit?” Kit nodded, indicating that Jem could come in. 

Jem smiled. “I heard a certain toddler convinced you to go back to LA.”

“Yup. I can’t say no to those chocolate eyes.” Jem laughed and ruffled Kit’s golden hair.

“I don’t think any of us can. I almost let her eat five cookies in one sitting.” Jem shuddered at the memory. “Tess swooped in and saved the day, though. Min only got through three before she was stopped.” The two laughed, content with swapping stories of their little Mina. 

“Are you ready to see him again?” Kit’s face fell at the question, his smile replaced with a gim expression.

“I want to see him again, but I don’t know if he wants to see me.” Kit fiddled with his hoodie strings. “I- I don’t know. I don’t want to hurt him again.” 

Jem pulled his son into a hug. “I’m sure you two will work it out. Now, pack up. We’re leaving tomorrow at sunrise.”

Ty woke up to see the Los Angeles sun glaring brightly outside of his window. He rolled out of bed, and quickly got dressed. He gave Irene a hug, and the two descended down into the kitchen. Emma had told him a guest was coming today, and he was hoping he could ask Magnus to see what else he knew about his and Livvy’s bond. 

“Morning Ty!” Emma gave him a quick hug, before Julian handed him a plate of pancakes. Ty let Irene outside, where she promptly returned with a mouse. 

A phone buzzed, and Julian handed his phone to Emma. “Our surprise guests are headed over now!” She announced.

“Surprise guests?” Ty asked, puzzled. 

“Yup!” Emma replied cheerily, a knowing glint in her eyes. “It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen them. They should be here any minute now!” Been a while since we’ve seen them… The realization hit Ty hard and fast. Kit. Kit was coming back. Not only that, he would be here any minute now. Ty almost dropped his plate. Emma stifled a laugh.

“They’re due to arrive in… less than five minutes now.” Ty shoveled the food into his mouth, then ran back upstairs. He frantically threw open his rather neglected wardrobe, searching for anything without scratch marks or holes. He finally found a simple gray sweater that, according to Magnus, “brought out his eyes”, and didn’t seem to have any visible distress. He pulled it on, along with a pair of black jeans Livvy had picked out for him. He ran downstairs just as a portal opened up in front of the institute. 

The first figure to emerge was a small toddler, her head covered in dark hair, her brown eyes sparkling with curiosity. 

Emma squealed and scooped up a very surprised Mina. “Mina!!” She hugged her… niece? Cousin multiple times removed? Ty shook his head. Better to ignore the specifics. Next stepped out Jem Carstairs and an all-too-familiar Herondale…

Kit looked as anxious as Ty felt. Kit was fidgeting with his denim jacket buttons, suddenly very interested in the wall right behind Ty. The morning sun bounced off his hair, giving his face a golden glow. Ty almost smiled at the sight. He was wearing a simple outfit; grey sweatpants, a white t-shirt and a blue denim jacket that almost matched his eyes exactly. He was different. His hair was longer, his body was more muscular, a little taller. But his sky eyes were still as clear Ty remembered. How beautiful.

Finally came Tessa Gray, who then closed her portal. 

“Welcome back to the LA institute!” Helen and Aline called from the back of the group, welcoming everyone inside. Everyone went around saying their “hello”s and” “how have you been”s. Everyone except Kit, who was standing in the corner of the room.

Ty took a deep breath, then started walking over. He cleared his throat. “Hi.” 

Kit gave a nervous smile. “Hey…”

The two boys stood in awkward silence. “So…” Kit started. “How have you been?”

“I’ve been alright. Irene and Li- Irene keeps me company.” The two of them quickly looked around to make sure no one had heard Ty’s slip. “You?” Kit shrugged. “Training. A lot of training. How was the Scholomance?” 

“A little lonely, but I didn’t mind much.”

“Did it make you happy?” Kit cut in. Ty looked back at him, puzzled. “What do you mean?”

“Did being at the Scholomance make you happy.” Kit repeated. His unspoken question hung in the air. Did being without me make you happy?

“I, I guess? I wasn’t sad there. It was nice, being able to research… more specific topics.” Kit nodded, understanding. 

“I’m glad.” Kit took another deep breath, trying to build up the courage to say the words he had been wanting to say for over three years.  “I- I just want you to be happy.”

Ty blinked down at him in surprise. Ty’s voice came out small. “If you wanted me to be happy… Why did you leave?” It was Kit’s turn to be surprised. 

Kit looked away, ashamed. “I- I hurt you. I didn’t want to hurt you again…”

Ty put a hand on the smaller boy’s shoulder. “It’s okay. You’re here now, and that’s what matters.” Kit looked back at Ty. Back into the silver eyes he loved. 

“If it makes you happy,” Kit started. He had started playing with his jacket again.  “I’ll come visit more often. Or you could come visit me! There are so many places I’d like to show you…” Kit trailed off, ideas filling his head. Ty leaned down and placed a kiss on Kit’s hair. 

“I’d love to come visit you some time.” 

Kit’s smilied, his eyes filled with a new hope. “Really?”

Ty smiled back. “Really.”
