What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

it seems like hypocrisy but it's really the same idea: your body is not yours to control. you are not allowed to be fat, you are not allowed to be trans, we will say whatever it takes to keep you in line

Trans people have to jump through all kinds of treacherous hoops, begging, pleading, humiliating ourselves to be allowed to start HRT.

Meanwhile my friend who is fat went to her doctor about breathing problems. Without looking at her medical history (which is vast and complicated and comes with an incredibly fragile digestive tract) he just looked at her and went "you should go on ozempic". Which, if he had checked her medical files, he'd known would be very fucking dangerous for her.

It's not about health, it's about controlling our bodies.

I dreamt I was watching a new horror movie from the same creators of IT (so I guess Stephen King and the director of the last two movies?) And it was again about a monster clown figure but he was different! Because he looked more like a pierot.

But the main difference was that instead of eating the kids immediately, he stalked them and infected them with a long term illness. And as he infected them the kids were shown a vision of their future death. So the horror was in the fact that these kids knew when they were gonna die. So over the years, slowly they all die of the illness one by one, the ones that survive the longest being filled with more dread over time. Some having started families and holding out hope that it was all just a scary dream and it wasn't real. But as their childhood friends keep dying, they know in their hearts it was probably real. Oh and for the horror effect as they die they can see the clown coming for them to eat their soul.

Honestly, if you change the clown to something else, it could work as a cool concept. Anyone with better writing skills is welcome to take it lol
