Why does no one in the vulture culture community know what a fox looks like without it's fur? Every single time someone posts a dead, mummified fox in VC groups, the comments are spammed with people insisting it's a whippet or greyhound.

Foxes are built like whippets under all that fur. A few seconds of googling will show you fox anatomy, as well as the anatomical differences between a whippet and fox (foxes have smaller ribcages, different skull shape, longer, thinner canine teeth etc.)

If you're going to collect animal remains at least learn how to ID common species in your area.

Today was just a roughhhh day. Had one of those dreams you wake up from and just feel so awful, it felt so real. Got halfway to my shoot when the homeowner texted me to tell me the weather was garbo and we agreed to reschedule but I went to go get the goat skull since it was just a little out of the ways on the way back. I go down tarboo lake road (spoilers that’s where the goat was) and the entire skeleton is picked clean (godDAMN do maggots work fast when it’s hot out) and the skull was gone. I poked around in the woods a bit but I’m pretty sure someone else took it. I have such bad luck with goat skulls too!

The first one I found I tried to get the skull from when a cop pulled up to ask what I was doing, I wasn’t doing anything illegal (domestic animal dumped in the woods on the side of a road) but I hid the shovel and just told him I was just looking at it. Came back a few days later because I couldn’t get the skull free and the whole thing was gone (I assume the other barnyard animal called it in and had it hauled away). The second one I found was half frozen and it took me a half hour on the side of the road cutting the head off with a pocket knife. Also at some point I either shattered the jaw or it was already shattered. This skull actually turned out great but it’s the outlier. Goat #3 has had the nasal bones eaten by my chickens because I keep forgetting to deal with it, and now this amazing ram skull with curled horns was taken mere days after I found it.

I’ve had only bad luck with goats too! First I had someone promise several to me and then change their mind without giving a reason. And then, more upsettingly, I got two goat heads which I bagged and buried several feet deep (hot, sweaty work) and the coyotes dug them up, tore apart the bags, and dragged them off overnight :(

Sometimes I think I’m not meant to have goats, but maybe they’re just difficult in death as they are in life!

What do you mean by "buttery fat", just curious?

So normally animal fat is kinda thick/chunky, and when you flesh it off it comes off in pretty solid pieces. However, some species (like dogs) have fat that's more of the consistency of butter. When you flesh it, the pressure of the knife scraping against the skin pushes liquid fat out of the skin, and it looks like a hot knife through butter where you get both large chunks and liquid fat dripping off the skin.

Yes it's gross.

Really cool pathological European red fox (Vulpes vulpes crucigera) skull I got today. 

This poor vixen suffered a nasty injury or break to her jaw. Somehow she managed to survive long enough for the bone to heal, although it’s very misshapen. The bone around the injury is extremely dense, and as a result the jaw feels noticeably heavier than a normal fox jaw. This was clearly an old injury as the missing tooth has completely healed over. It must have been very painful and made hunting and even just eating hard, but foxes are tough creatures!

Currently trying to get permission to bury my dog on a friend’s land for a while, but if that doesn’t work out... any chance there are some vulture culture folks in or near Topeka who could process her for me?

Suspenders! All kinds! Bright ones and classy ones and new ones and vintage ones! Suspenders rule!

Repairing the fence over and over and over again! How do those rascals keep getting out?

@raythespastic yeah he’s real! He’s taxidermy!

And the horns are removable because they have to cut them off of the actual skull to insert them on the form underneath. Since taxidermists no longer use actual skulls in their practice anymore, and horns and antlers are connected to skulls, they have to cut that chunk out of the skull and insert it into a space on the form.

However, some taxidermists take it farther. Instead of cutting out a chunk of the skull for animals who have actual horns (not antlers) they’ll clean the skull and take off the horn sheaths, as the pretty part of the horn is just a keratin sheath that sits on top of bone, when you clean the skull the sheath can slide right off.

Then all they have to do is slide the sheaths onto the horn form underneath. Then they’re removable! Most large game like this have removable horns so that horns don’t get broken while the taxidermy mount is being moved. This mount was easily nearly as tall as I am (and I’m 5’2) so moving the taxidermy around without taking the horns off would be next to impossible without damaging them.

I have several animals with removable horn sheaths (bone - not taxidermy) so please let me know if you would like to see an example of how horn sheaths sit on the horn core!

Okay so, I’m not 100% sure, but here’s my best guess from the sparse research I’ve done! (Theres surprisingly not much info about it on google, so if someone knows more, please share!)

Firstly, using a form and then sculpting over it produces way more accurate depictions of an animal than leaving the skull in. You know how paleontologists have trouble figuring out what a t-Rex really looked like just from the skeleton? It’s kind of similar! Using forms that are already the basic shape and sculpting over them makes the animal look more full of muscle and tissue rather than trying to sculpt over a skull (which would also use more of what ever you’re sculpting with)

Secondly: forms are generally made of foam nowadays, which is much much lighter than bone. This makes your taxidermy less top-heavy and less likely to break over time (and it’s way easier to fix if it does end up breaking)

Thirdly: it takes less time! Fully rotting down and cleaning a skull takes so much time and effort. It’s much faster to just tan the hide and use a form

Fourth...ly?: museums and collectors especially wanted to be able to mount a taxidermy specimen next to the articulated skeleton for display, that way both the inside and outside of an animal could be viewed and studied.

The post clearly said “colonist” not “racist” although related, they are not necessarily the same.

Obviously. Obviously you can like forests and cottages and not be racist. Youre the one with the problem if you can’t discern that from the post you’re talking about.

But for white people to fantasize about plots of land so they can escape society because it sucks. Yeah I think it’s fair to say that it’s another way to avoid talking about and dealing with systemic issues. If you’re privileged enough to walk away from societal issues and find no problem with that, but at the same time try to pin it as positivity? And don’t ever try to fix society first? Yeah I think that’s a fair point.

And lastly. If you’re a white American and don’t like what a black person or Native person has to say about your chosen aesthetic? Huh like too bad. Obviously you didn’t choose to consider some of the connotations so don’t bring it up like you really deeply care.

I feel like people are purposely missining the point of this post. It is white. The entire concept of white people en masse moving into the woods to escape an issue that they are responsible for, be it directly or indirectly, reeks of historical colonilization. Not only that, indigenous bloggers have spoken about the anti-indigenous mindset that comes with claiming lands that aren’t your own due to what you’ve caused, especially since this land may be Indigenous land. Black bloggers have discussed how this mindset is very reminiscent or racism that forced black people out of the deep South, and how cottagecore’s whiteness has made it hard for people of color to exist. let’s not pretend there’s not a connection between cottagecore and the witch community, which is notoriously racist. Maybe instead of running away from problems you all benefit from, fix the problems in the present society.
