The faint sounds of a child’s mewling stir’s the exhausted young mother out of her sleep. “Coming… sweetheart…” Lucy stretches and rubs the weariness from her eyes taking a few moments to rouse her mind away from dreamland. But she was so tired from the feeding schedule of a newborn, barely gaining a couple hours here or there. Thank Mavis, Nashi wasn’t a colicky baby just a healthy eater, ‘who takes after her father…’
Groaning as her stiff muscles dispute her desires to move, maybe her husband could take this round, having prepared a couple of bottles just in case. She rolls onto her back, arm flopping to her side, ‘Eh?’ but hits air. She turns to find the bed empty, where could Natsu have gone?
Sighing, Lucy drags herself out of bed, and staggers to the nursery across the hallway, muttering under her breath that her husband better not be rummaging in the kitchen for a midnight snack. The faint glow of the starry nightlights greeting her through the cracked door, Lucy pauses, it’s strange that Nashi’s cries had all but disappeared and all that remained was a contented burbling.
She pushes the door in slowly, careful to avoid any creaking sounds that could awaken her daughter again but the vision she sees fades away the last remnants of sleep and tears of blessed glee pool at the corners of her lids. Any Irritation with her absentee husband long forgotten as she smiles and melts into a feeling of pure love for there he was, crammed into the crib with a contented Nashi resting against his chest.
If ever there was a moment of doubt in her mind of the kind of father Natsu would become, those reservations were kicked to the curb, hit the delete button in her brain and sent to the recycle bin. Lucy creeps back out, grabbing her cell phone to capture this precious moment, and with a quick prayer that the flash doesn’t wake them, snaps the pic, forever sealing it in time. Okay, make that a couple of pics, she giggles in her head, just in case.
She pulls a chair up to the side of the crib, ‘my two pink-haired loves,’ smiling and sighing in adoration as she gently brushes a few rogue strands away from both their faces. Lucy almost wished she could crawl in with them, a yawn creeping up now that her worries had been allayed, beckoning her back to sleep. ‘Mmmm…’ resting her head on her arms and closing her eyes, ‘I love my little family…’
