Thalia was born to Ariana Serrano and Marco D’Angelo in Florence, Italy. She did not know much about them as they disappeared when she was young. She never knew where they went as they never told her. Missing persons reports were never filed and they were never found. So, Thalia was sent to live with her aunt and uncle, her father’s brother.
When she arrived at their doorstep, she was raised as their own and took very good care of her. They loved her, fed her, taught her how to read and speak different languages, and traveled frequently. Eventually, they explained to her that her parents were often in trouble, whether it was the law or with criminals around Italy and Europe in general. Sometimes though, her aunt and uncle explained, they were also in trouble with people in the world of the supernatural.
When Thalia turned ten years old, she developed a love for art and showed great skill in painting. She also developed a special skill for magic, which ran in the family. Her aunt and uncle, who were also magicians, began to teach her about how to wield her magic.
She never went to school for magic and learned on her own or through other ways (books, websites, experimenting with other magician friends, other illegal means), sometimes with teachers who were also never formally taught. She had an affinity for illusion casting, which ultimately helped her with her budding career as an art forger.
Her family was never well to do and Thalia eventually learned that her aunt and uncle were also caught up in the same less than legal activities as her parents. She never resisted and actually enjoyed picking pockets, running cons and scams, and copying famous works of art. She even worked with a crew of art thieves and used her magic to help them succeed. She was never entirely in it for the money, but instead for fun and a desire for a (twisted) sense of family.
Eventually, all things must come to an end. She and her aunt and uncle were all arrested, with their crew having been infiltrated by an undercover agent. Thalia’s aunt and uncle were put in prison while Thalia was able to frame her role in the art heists as being forced to take part. She was able to strike up a deal to avoid jail and has landed herself in Acadia Academy and put under a watchful eye.
“The same way wolves have enhanced hearing, some of us are more sensitive to magic. Well-trained magicians can easily identify the presence of magic.” Agnes often felt a connection to the unnatural, as if it drew her in wherever she went. It didn’t happen at first, but as she gained more experience, it grew stronger. “My experience with illusions also come in handy. Even if our object of distortion is different, there is still a distortion.” Agnes was pleased to see her acceptance. Thalia seemed to already work on a plan.
Agnes got up and grabbed a statue of Morrigan she had brought with her from Ireland. The waist of the female shape fitted in one hand, which she held forward. “May I?” She called Thalia’s attention to the object in hand. Without taking her eyes off the girl, she transformed the goddess into one of her books. She didn’t change the nature of the object at all, but she was able to twist Thalia’s notion of the object and project the illusion of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Agnes’s subconscious memory of the material made up the pages and details of the book. Only someone familiar with it would notice a difference.
Thalia furrowed her brow as she considered what the professor was telling her. She hadn’t given much thought to other species. She never thought about how they fit into the supernatural community or all of their abilities. Thalia thought about herself and her own craft and other magicians. Thalia slowly started to walk around the office, seeing what she had at her disposal.
Thalia turned to face Agnes as she picked up the statue. She wiped a hand over it and the statue was no more. Instead, it was an older book, one that Thalia had come across a long time ago. If she wasn’t mistaken and hadn’t forgotten, she could see some subtle differences in the cover, but if no one knew what the cover looked like, they’d never know they were looking at an illusion. She often times did something similar with her paintings when someone started to give it a strange look. She’d use a little magic to alter it to fit the real thing. “Are siren, banshee, and magician illusions all different?” Thalia and Sibel had similar illusion casting abilities, but Sibel was a siren while Thalia was a magician. And here Agnes was, a banshee, performing her own illusion casting.
There had been a fifty-fifty chance that Thalia would’ve been annoyed with Sibel the first day and bailed due to it. Or that was what Sibel was thinking. Thankfully, it seemed like her fellow thief had been willing to continue with various little heists here and there, the adrenaline rush definitely kicking in for Sibel in the most delightful manner each time. The siren had been completely zoned out before she noticed Thalia coming over. Sibel grinned at her, only to look bewildered by the question.
“Italy?” She repeated in wonder. “Like the Gladiator movie, ‘are you not entertained’ Italy?” Sibel mused, raising an eyebrow as she was really intrigued by where Thalia was going with that. “No… why?”
Thalia nodded and grinned at her friend. “Yes, just like the Gladiator movie. Although I will say that there were a few buildings that they showed that didn’t exist yet in Rome when the film took place,” she said. She wasn’t a huge film buff, but she had seen some of the classics. She was more of an Old Hollywood and French New Wave person, but some newer films were entertaining too. “But yes, Italy. Leaning Tower of Pisa, pasta, football, pizza, Pompeii, the Vatican gelato, the whole nine yards....” It had been nearly a year since she’d last been home in Italy. She’d never been too fond of America aside from what she’d seen on TV, which showed a very rosy and romantic view of New York and California. Somehow, she’d landed herself close to New York City (where she’d move to if she had to be in the US) but not close enough. “Did you want to come to Italy? There’s a new spell I wanted to try that’s supposed to transport the caster anywhere they want to go. I could use a partner in crime for it. Plus, there’s people in Italy that don’t care too much for me so it’d be nice to have backup.”
“Ah, yes, but don’t keep everything to yourself. You have to keep the interest as well.” he stated with a smile. Was he curious? of course, but he also liked to be in the loop as well. Though he had no clue what purpose, plan, or goal she had in mind. He went along because it was fun. They were heading in the direction of the stairwell, and no one was around. Unlocking the door, he smirked, it’s like sneaking in, doing things one shouldn’t. completely something he’d do. “If I say yes, are you going to take it and run? leave a poor soul here alone?” he raised a brow, not that he’d actually be hurt.
"Hmmm, depends on if I can trust you,” Thalia said, looking up at the ceiling. She always played it off and put on a mischievous smile, but after the last time she trusted someone, she began to be much more wary of others. She had always been careful to hold her cards close to her chest, but occasionally, their heists required teams to pull them off. Thalia still dragged companions along, but never for things that mattered as much anymore. Thalia smirked at him. “I’m not going to take it and run this time. Promise,” she told him. “At least not yet.” She walked around the Astronomy Tower and headed towards a large glass that faced a window. “So, do you still have it or did you have butter fingers and drop it around the guards back there?”
Thalia hadn’t really relied on anyone lately after the betrayal in her inner circle in Italy. But, she found herself trusting Sibel, a fellow thief. Over the last few weeks, they’d grown closer after a few schemes and Thalia realized how much she’d missed being with like minded people. The only problem was that Thalia still had trouble opening up to others. She could talk all day long with someone, but not a word out of her mouth would be about herself. Thalia spotted Sibel in the courtyard, so she waved and headed over to meet her friend. “Hey, Sibel! Have you ever been to Italy?” She asked Sibel as she sat down next to her.
This was certainly one way to spend a day, and it was actually pretty fun. Someone else to cause chaos. He was drawn to it, like a moth to a flame. Naturally , maybe it was drawn to him, he didn’t know. But he would see how it all plays out. Who was this chick? and he was pretty intrigued that he had came across her. “ I bet you do, but oh!” he whispered, adding a bit of excitement in his tone “It’s a secret right?” he laughed. He walked along with her as they headed back to the school, not at all minding that she was still holding on to him.
"Of course it is,” she said with a laugh. “I can’t let you know everything just yet. Ruins all the fun and it gets rid of the mystery.” She pulled him through the doorway to the stairwell of the tower that was meant for astronomy classes. Students weren’t allowed in there when it wasn’t for classes, but of course that did not stop Thalia. After a few flicks of her wrist, she was able to unlock the door so they could go in. Once Thalia could tell they were safe from the authorities, she made them visible again and let go of his arm. “You still got that chalice?” She asked. She looked out as the sun started to set.
For the previous hour, Agnes had been grading papers. The room smelled like cigarettes and coffee, and as much as she disliked consuming too much caffeine, she knew she’d need it to do her task. When she heard Thalia’s voice, she looked up from her papers. Agnes was surprised when the girl accepted her offer so soon. “Of course,” She said. “Make yourself comfortable.” She gave a friendly smile and gestured to the chair in front of her. “Let me get rid of these.” She pushed the papers to one side, removing any obstacles between the two of them. “I understand you’ve done heists in the human world, but supernatural perceptions of events can differ significantly. I want you to steal a book from my office without me noticing it’s gone.” She shifted her gaze to the little bookshelf on which she kept her work materials. “You have complete access to my office, and you can take your time with this task.” She gave Thalia a playful smile, hoping the challenge would entice her.
Thalia pressed her lips together into a thin line as she sat down across from the banshee. She didn’t know what to expect and she wasn’t entirely sure what to think of Agnes. She was a young professor, which meant that she didn’t have as much experience as some of the older ones. But, she seemed to have something to offer that Thalia could put to good use, so it seemed like it was worth a shot. The worse that could happen was Thalia ended the deal and she went off on her own. Hopefully, that wouldn’t happen. “Yes. Humans are easy to fool,” she said, leaning back in the seat. She tapped her fingers on the armrests. For years, she’d created forgeries of art pieces that could be passed off. If anything got too dicey for their crew, she could use a little illusion magic to help them out. “Supernatural perceptions? Like what?” She cocked her head to the side as she listened to the challenge. She turned her head to the small bookshelf. Immediately, the gears in her head started to turn as she tried to figure out a way to steal a book. It was going to be a challenge for sure if Agnes already knew to expect it. Thalia mirrored her playful smile as she nodded to accept the challenge.
My name is Thalia Serrano-D’Angelo and I am five years old this year. I’ve been working hard to be a very good girl this year because I know you give good kids the best gifts. Most kids ask for bicycles and toys, but this year I would really like for something else. This year, I wanted to ask you to please please please bring my parents home. I love my aunt and uncle, but I really miss my parents and I haven’t seen them in months.
My aunt and uncle said that they went away for a trip and they don’t know when they’ll be back. I hope you can find them and bring them home to me please. If you do, I promise I won’t cause anymore trouble for the next year 10 years! Thank you, Mister St. Nicholas! Merry Christmas!
With Love,
Thalia Serrano-D’Angelo
The letter was originally written in Italian. It was never sent after her aunt and uncle told her that St. Nicholas was not real, that she was being childish, and that her parents were never coming back. Thalia ripped up the letter afterwards and threw it in the trash. After that, she, for the most part, stopped thinking about her parents and was forced to accept that they were gone and her aunt and uncle were her only family now.
If Caleb really wanted to get into it, into theatrics, or even make this situation more chaotic, he could have. However, it was the reappearance of the other, that had him smirking. “Ah, so you don’t just leave others behind?” he teased, and then smiled at her words. The contact of her grabbing his arm, as they disappeared, he looked at the expression on the officers faces. It was hilarious. At this point, Caleb was following her lead, he hadn’t had this much fun in a while, and to add someone else that caused trouble, he welcomed it. “Lead the way.” he whispered.
Thalia smirked at him. “I have my reasons,” she told him. Truth be told, she wasn’t a stranger to leaving people behind, but he seemed like he could be useful. She was sure she could rope him into anything that was a little shady. He seemed like the rebel just for the hell of it kind of guy. Anything that said ‘fuck the establishment,’ he’d go with it. She winked at him and then held onto his arm as she led him away from the scene of the crime. They headed down the hall and heading for one of the towers of the school.
Bryn’s eyes widened. “Wait… Do you… Are you… Is your focus illusions, too?” They asked. Bryn hadn’t met a lot of people who had the same focus as them. When she told them about the ceiling, Bryn frowned. “What.. I can’t believe I’ve never noticed that.” The magician shook their head.
They sighed and gripped their bag tighter and glanced up at ceiling, taking it all in. “I… I really should get my head out of my books and actually look at the campus.” They admitted. “I’ve been here for like, what… A year and I really haven’t explored as much as I should have.” Bryn told her honestly. “Maybe I shouldn’t be so against whatever the hell is happening right now.” They laughed. “Alright, where are we going next?” Bryn asked with a nervous laugh.
Thalia grinned as she watched their expression change from surprise to awe. She didn’t like a lot of people knowing all of her secrets or special hiding places in the school, but it was apparent that they needed to see something amazing and different. “Yes, it is,” she replied with a nod. “But if anyone asks about some weird things going on with the paintings in the main hall, it wasn’t me,” she added with a wink.
“Yeah, you should! Books are great and all but sometimes you have to look at what’s in front of you,” Thalia told them, nudging them on the arm with their elbow. She wasn’t all that book smart and loathed writing papers and taking tests, but she was a quick learner and enjoyed learning something new. “Oh, you want to go somewhere else?” She raised her eyebrows, appreciating the new challenge to impress her new companion. She pressed her lips together, trying to think of another place to take them. “Okay, I have a place. Come on,” she said, nodding in the direction of the exit. “You said you’ve been here a year and haven’t done any exploring of the campus?”
If he had anything else to do, Cade already would have walked out of the room by now. He doubted that anyone out there could manage to annoy him more than this girl in front of him but then again it would somehow feel like giving in and that was the last thing he wanted. “Well, judging by the way you’re behaving, I’m surprised you even know what exclamation points are!”, he countered. She certainly wasn’t intimidated by him, he had to give her that, but then again it was obvious that she didn’t take him serious at all. And that was a mistake that quite a few people had made around him. But then again he had warned her. He wasn’t going to do that again next time. “You’d be surprised what people in high positions would be willing to believe to keep their secrets from being spread like wildfire. Turns out they all have something to lose…”, he explained, almost seeming bored. As if it was some part of an annoying job. It seemed like to her this was all part of some fun game. A girl who seemed like she never had to take real responsibility for her actions. But he certainly knew his way around. And he was pretty sure that she didn’t want to know what he was capable of.
"Oh, wow. Sick burn. Year Two insults are always a sign of intelligence,” Thalia said with a smile. She waved her hands in the air to imitate the exclamation points as he continued to speak. She found it humorous how his whole demeanor flipped on a dime. He was definitely a sensitive guy. “Okay, so you’re threatening to turn me into the authorities all because I annoyed you because I fooled you with a trick that you couldn’t do?” Thalia asked, raising her eyebrows. “It sounds more like a personal problem that you can’t handle having a little friendly rivalry with someone. Again, I do applaud you for the mind reading. At least you did one smart thing.” She glanced down at her watch and sucked in a sharp breath. “As fun as this has been, I have to go because I have an appointment to sell this fine goblet to a black market buyer. You can add that to my running tab of offenses that you can present to the headmaster if you’d like. And if you want, I can give you an Excel spreadsheet later on of all the other shit I’ve done. But, just make sure you give me a Google email account and not some other one because I said it’s Excel, but it’s actually a Google Spreadsheet. That way it can go to the cloud so everyone knows about it.” She shoved the golden goblet back in her bag and brushed her hair back. “But seriously, I’ve got to learn that cute mind reading trick you do. It would definitely come in handy when I try to pick up someone at a bar. You’ll have to teach it to me sometime. Remember, Google email. None of that Yahoo or Hotmail bullshit.” Thalia gave him one last mischievous grin before heading out of the classroom.
“Oh, gods. You startled me,” Harper said with an apologetic look on their face as they were peaking their head out of their office door. “This place has all sorts of noises in the evening.” They let out a sigh of relief before standing up straighter, looking at the other. “Can I help you with anything?” they finally asked.
Thalia looked at the professor and smiled. “Good evening, professor,” she said. “I guess it does make a lot of noise.” She stared off in the distance, thinking about all the strange sounds she’d heard when she snuck around late at night. “But I guess any old building does that,” she added with another grin. “Yes. I did have a few questions for you, if you have the time.”
Myles was taking a drink of soda when Thalia asked her question that it nearly made him choke. After swallowing, he started to laugh, his cheeks becoming pink. “Oh my god. I’m sorry, that’s just–that’s the funniest shit I’ve ever been asked,” he explained in between his laughter. Once it died down, he was able to speak up again. “Okay, how can I put this? It’s like, I have some wolf-like urges, like when it comes to food or wanting affection and stuff, but it’s not like my brain is on complete dog mode ‘cause I’m still very much in control. Does that make sense?”
Thalia grinned at Myles as he found her questions extremely amusing. She definitely had a way with words. “Does that mean you’d never become a vegetarian or vegan?” she asked. “Or can you if you don’t count eating meat in your wolf form. I don’t think vegetarians or vegans took werewolves into account when they made the rules.” She stirred her gnocchi around before taking another bite. “Fascinating. Totally makes sense. Okay, another question. Wanting affection. Do you mean like pats on the head or belly rubs? Or do you just have these big puppy dog eyes and people just melt like putty in your hands?”
“Definitely an odd ball. Kind of arrogant and not even in a cool way. Definitely has anger issues. Talks with a lot of exclamation points. I can practically see them moving around over his head when he talks like a cartoon, but he’s tragically not as cute as a cartoon. Definitely not smart enough to use his mind reading abilities to get himself a girlfriend...or boyfriend. Or both. I’m not a mind reader so I don’t know what he’s into. Let’s say, there’s room for improvement. Getting a personality is a good start.”
