International students in the US: If your college/university has canceled in-person classes due to COVID-19, DO NOT LEAVE THE COUNTRY. Your SEVIS record may be terminated, and you may lose your visa.

This was an email sent out to students, not in my college, but in one of our neighbors in the consortium. I’m still waiting to officially hear from my school, but I spoke to our Dean of International Students yesterday and they said something to the effect of online classes not being considered “full-time study,” which is required to maintain F-1 status. They’re looking into making an exception for COVID-19, but it’s still lost in a tangle of bureaucratic bullshit.

I will update this post as soon as I have any more information. Please stay safe, look after yourselves, and know that you are not alone 💜

As someone working at an immigration law firm currently and has to handle ALL visa types!! This is true! We have been told this multiple times, and have reached out to our clientele about this! Please, to keep your F-1 status, please stay! I know it’s scary, but losing your status and your SEVIS record is also terrifying so please do your best to stay.

I don’t know when OP posted but I’d like to provide an update based on what my university said as of March 13 (please note that my university is only going online until April 5):

1. How does switching to online instruction affect my immigration status?

U.S. universities received guidance from the Department of Homeland Security that allows students to continue this semester’s courses online without jeopardizing their immigration status. This means that you must continue to be enrolled full-time and be making normal progress toward the degree. Regardless of where you are participating in online classes, your immigration status will remain active. Please note that this is a temporary accommodation in place until this health crisis ends and in-person classes resume.

However, you should still check with your international students office to ensure that they are able to support you in case you run into trouble! I’m aware not all universities support international students in the same way, so I hope this update can help.

thejumpingrice is right; I first made this post 2 days ago (March 11) and since then my school has confirmed that an exception has been made for classes going online due to COVID-19.

International students are now able to maintain their F-1/J-1 status if they leave the country, BUT they must return to campus if/when classes resume in person.

Please double check with your international student office before you travel and make sure the signature on your I-20 is valid (it’s good for 1 year from the date of signing, unless you’re currently doing post-completion OPT, in which case it’s 6 months).

My school does not recommend traveling because a) it increases your risk of exposure to the virus, and b) borders could eventually be closed, so you might not be able to get back into the country even if you have a valid visa. Stay safe, look after yourselves, and please feel free to add to this post if you have any more information/resources that you can share 💜
