It also shouldn't mean having to be deprived of things that make you happy, beyond just the basic needs of survival.

“kids spend too much time on their devices” well what else are they supposed to do? there’s no corner shops with pinball machines in them on every corner anymore. there’s no malls or stores in small towns for teens to hang out in without being suspected of shoplifting or kicked out for loitering. sidewalks are too broken for them to ride their bikes and there’s no bike lane in the street to make it safe for them. i just don’t understand where they expect these kids to go when they keep taking places away from them. and yes having no safe public places for them is what leads a lot of teens into addiction if they end up at a place where people aren’t truly looking out for them.

Yknow what also sucks about this? Growing up i wasn't allowed to go ANYWHERE. Couldn't go to the fair, couldn't go to events, had to **beg** to be allowed to go to the homecoming football game to see my friends play for the first and last time, and overall wasn't allowed to leave the house. Most of my outings were because i was a member & manager of the tennis team and got to go with my teammates to games and restaurants afterwards.

I looked forward to the day when I'd become an adult so i could actually go and experience what I couldn't before. Go to the movies with friends, go to an arcade, try going to a skating rink, visit a mall. By the time I got my license at 22, the arcades were bulldozed and turned into gas stations or restaurants, the 4 malls in the triad area were completely abandoned, the only skating rink within a 200 mile radius was turned into a fucking DOLLAR GENERAL, and the nearby movie theater had a lot of financial issues due to covid and shut down 4 times.

Fun places in general are shutting down left and right. It's not just taking away spaces for kids to enjoy, it's taking away spaces for EVERYONE to enjoy. And it's contributing heavily to not only screen addiction, but a general loneliness epidemic. We have less hangout spots, less options for people to go out on dates, less places to go blow off steam and have fun, etc etc etc.

i will give tiktok one concession and that is that it has spawned a comment that contains a phrase that i think of often at relevant moments: pack it up boys we've made a social blunder
