Darcy/Steve The Prince and Me AU

Bored with palace life and wanting a new adventure, Steven Grant Rogers, crown prince of Denmark, convinces his parents to allow him to attend college in America. On the condition that he is to be chaperoned by his assistant Samuel Wilson - who he orders not to reveal his royal identity - ’Steve’ enrolls at Georgetown University. He immediately clashes with Darcy Lewis, hyper-focused on finishing her last two semesters of pre-med studies before applying to medical school and inching closer to her dream of working with Doctors Without Borders alongside her best friend Jane Foster. 

Slowly, they warm up to one another- Darcy teaches Steve how to do laundry, Steve uses his classical education to help Darcy connect with Shakespeare, and she invites him to her parents farm to celebrate Thanksgiving. When they return to school, they sneak off to the library stacks to pursue a romantic encounter of unspecified nature. While there, members of the Danish tabloid press who had been tracking the prince’s unknown whereabouts ambush the stunned couple. Once they’re able to break away from the mayhem, Darcy learns of his real identity. Feeling betrayed and accusing him of lying, she leaves. Before Steve is able to catch up with her, Samuel intercepts him and tells him that his grandmother is very ill and he’s needed at home at once. 

While Darcy faces a panel of professors questioning her about Shakespeare and love, she realizes that she loves Steve and runs to find him, only to discover that he has already left for Denmark. She goes after him to Copenhagen, only to be recognized by the crowd during the annual parade. Steve finds her and takes her back to the castle, and she struggles to conform to his royal lifestyle. As the magnitude of Steve being the prince hits her, Darcy tells him that as much as she loves him, she can’t give up her dreams and stop being herself but that he needs to stay for his family and for his country. Devastated but understanding, Steve lets her go.

She returns to Washington D.C and graduates from college, where she has been accepted to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Following a tip off from Jane and a heart to heart with his grandmother, Steve surprises her at graduation expressing that while he does want to spend forever with her, he’s willing to wait as long as it takes for her to complete med school and achieve her dreams. 

Denmark might not be ready for someone like Darcy, but Steve most certainly is.
