Philadelphiaâs new pride flag honors LGBTQ people of color

Honestly I think this is awesome, symbols should be as dynamic as the needs of our communities, we should not be afraid to change them whenever we feel it is needed.
And while this is symbolic and doesnât immediately translate to real change, the messages it sends, both âPOC are Hereâ and âRacists not welcomeâ are important.
All the white people flipping out about this because they think itâs not beautiful or not traditional or not a rainbow as it appears in nature are showing how used they are to a sheltered condition of not having to seriously consider the needs of people of color, because they think an esthetic matters more than the question of whether this is an effective way to adress a real issue. How did we get to a point where that level of apathy is normal?
So I support this. Heck, Iâd support it if we wrote âRACISTS FUCK OFFâ in large print on every single pride flag until the day when we didnât have a single racist left in our communities. That would be worth changing all our symbols for.
Am I the only one not excited about these changes to the flag?
1. Y'all waited until Gilbert died to do this. Itâs disrespectful, so say the least. The colors were all assigned their own meanings, so tacking some other colors is just⊠messy and uneducated.
2. This implies that black and brown people were not involved in pride when we are the very reason it exists. Pride was built and shaped by black and brown LGBT women. Acknowledge the history.
3. While acknowledging racism in the community is necessary, pride is a time of togetherness and community. Adding two colored stripes to the flag doesnât do anything. This isnât doing anything to challenge racism within the community.
Exactly.
Honestly I hate this addition. Please donât change the pride flag. POC arenât just some stripes that have been tacked on recently, weâve been there since the very beginning. POC built Pride so thereâs no reason for this tacky and disrespectful add on. The flag is historically symbolic and should never be changed.
Ngl but putting extra stripes on just to show POC are part of the LGBTQ+ community is essentially saying that we werent included in pride or the community to begin with. I understand the intentions for wanting to put it on but overall it still shows exclusivity since you are just categorising race as a whole separate part of the community instead. treat POC ,community or not, just as equally as you would want to be treated equally.
And honestly, this whole situation just reeks of slacktivism. âOoh look! We added stripes! Weâre so progressive, racism is solved!â Itâs a lazy cop-out. We need to be opening actual dialogue about race issues, not just doing meaningless gestures.
- Blue
Why do that anyway? I mean, for one youâre just adding more division, and twoâit wasnât like yaâll werenât included in pride.
Not only does this send unfortunate implications like everyone above me has pointed out, but itâs also not aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
This also has the implication that blacks and latinos are part of the LGBT community due to the fact thyâre ethnic minorities
There arenât any white stripes for white activists - because the colors arenât at all representative of race or the ethnicity of the community. The community already welcomes people who are not white - after all, Stonewall was started by black women.Â
Itâs lazy activism, and I find it a bit insulting that they think this is going to change anything
~ The Lovers
Iâm glad I wasnât the only one bothered by this.
Like, thereâs major trans, bi, and ace erasure in the community, tooâbut we arenât inserting our colors into the gay pride flag. Thatâs disrespectful, and it makes a flag specifically about sexuality into a flag about race.
I just want to give a few tips for people with super long hair.
When you shower, use whatever temperature you usually use but once you are done, turn the water cold and soak your hair in cold water. Get all the hot water out because this will make your hair shine and shit
Focus shampoo mainly near the roots. Shampoo is something that removes oils and your ends can be pretty dry so they donât need that too much.
Focus conditioner at the ends. Conditioner is filled with oils which your ends needs, dont put it in your roots, it can make your scalp all moist and gross. (also dont use conditioner every day)
When you dry your hair with a towel, dont rub the hair together, squeeze the hair with the towel so you wont damage it further.
Blow dry your roots, this way it wont get moist and shit in your scalp which can result gross swampy shit or dandruff etc
Always brush your hair before sleeping/showering
Long hair can often be heavy and seem as if its glued to your face. To get a little lift, sleep with your hair up in a SUPER high pony tail and the tighter the better. Once you wake up and let your hair down, BOM BAM UR A GODDESS/GOD
Hope it helps. Remember some of these things works differently for different people but all these works amazingly for me, hope it helps you<3
Black girl note: this works in natural hair too
Same.
