"So when I was about 6 years old my mama passed away. A few years after that her mama came on the scene. She was very nice, she was lovely to be around. Then Ruby was born. And my dad started working away from home a lot, and then that whole dynamic changed. A lot. So I didn't really get to know Ruby, because I didn't get to spend a lot of time with Ruby."

Okay, so I haven't drawn anything in about two years. But something about this scene really spoke to me, and I really wanted to see it realised in some way.

The order of the vignettes are Briar's mothers grave, Ruby's mother at the wedding, the empty seat where their father would be, and Ruby's empty bassinet.

I decided it would be an empty bassinet at the end because after her birth, Briar didn't get to know her. So early childhood is the most he knew of her before she was nearly absent from his life, at least in any meaningful way.
