ADHD causes memory problems
I remember essentially nothing from before 2-3 years ago.
I don’t remember my parent’s birthday or wedding anniversary (my dad’s was last week it seems, and I didn’t know till my mom called me yesterday, seriously.. I even wrote it down and missed it).
I don’t remember the name of the characters or story from my favorite novel.
And yes, its cause of the ADHD.
Memory problem is an inattentive symptom and affects people with ADHD-PI more often (but can affect PH people too).
ADHD directly affects two kinds memory: Working and Short Term memory.
While the two are used interchangeably, there is a distinction: working memory involves manipulating the stored information while short term memory is purely storage.
Doing sums in your head? That’s working memory.
Remembering a phone number? That’s short term memory.
And ADHD is the reason you have difficulty with both.
Here’s the thing though.. various processes in your brain turn short term memory into long term memory. But as we have difficulties with short term memory, it creates difficulties in long term memory.
It makes sense if you think about it.. if you have difficulty focusing/ concentrating on the task at hand, it will not be absorbed into your brain and you’ll have difficulty recalling it later.
Now good news is that your memory can be improved (meds can boost your memory but it is temporary unlike coping mechanisms). As you can guess, I CAN actually remember things that happened after 2-3 years ago. How? I learnt mindfulness, which helped me improve my concentration and active listening skills. It takes a fuck tonne of energy and effort but my memory is probably a few times better than it used to be.. not as much as when I’m on meds, but atleast 40-50% of it and its not temporary like the meds.
I will post a more detailed post about how I improved my memory soon (unless executive dysfunctions fucks with me, in which case I apologize :P).
Still one of the best videos on the internet.

hey guys psa regarding hospital bills
don’t just pay it. do not automatically pay the hospital bill when you receive it. call your health insurance provider and POLITELY say, “excuse me, i just received a bill for $1200 for my hospital visit/ER visit/etc., is that the correct amount i’m supposed to pay?” because hospitals bill you before your health insurance and they will take your money no matter how the amount due may change based on your health insurance looking at it. 90% of the time, if your health insurance is in any way involved in the payment of that bill, you do not have to pay as much as the hospital is billing you for. call your health insurance provider first, and POLITELY request clarification, always remember that the person you are talking to is human and this is just their job, and then you will very likely find out you actually only owe $500.
don’t shout at anyone about it, don’t get mad, just understand that this is The Way Things Are right now and call your health insurance provider before paying the bill your hospital just sent you. there’s a chance the hospital bill might be correct, true, but call your health insurance provider.
THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT. after my car accident last year the hospital billed me ~$8000. They sent me letters asking me to pay, and I called them back saying my insurance was processing the claim. This is also what I told the collection agency when they kept calling me about the $1000 emergency room fee (billed separately from the hospital fee, mind you). Once everything got straightened out, all I was actually liable for was my $200 emergency copay.
!!!!!!! things my ass didn’t know !!!!!!!!
Yes this is a life lesson my adulting ass didn’t know I needed and I’m out 80 bucks for an anti-nausea pill. 😒😒😒😒😒
Reblogging for American friends.
Also, it is important [for people receiving medical care in the USA] to carefully read all of the items on the medical bill and look for errors and overcharges. I know that the normal feelings of avoidance and dread can make it hard to look at scary hospital bills, and that’s okay! But as the OP mentions, private orgs like hospitals don’t monitor overpayment of bills - they are motivated to charge you extra - and it is basically impossible to get your money back. Read the bill carefully and make sure that the charges are correct, using the links below for help if you need. If they haven’t sent you an itemized list, you can ask for one. Sometimes you will be charged extra for items or treatment you didn’t receive. Most people don’t know that you can dispute medical bills! But in 2009, Consumer Reports stated that 8 out of 10 medical bills scrutinized by a watchdog had errors, and generally you are not obligated to pay for someone else’s error.
You may be charged for using medication that you actually brought into the hospital with you - that’s easy to dispute! You may be charged for the consumables used during your stay such as sheets, gloves, gowns, etc - the hospital should actually cover that under its running budget. You may be charged for a brand name drug if the generic was available for cheaper - the links below explain how and when you can dispute this. You may be charged a surprisingly expensive “oral administration fee” (where a nurse puts pills for you to take in a little clean paper cup and then hands it to you) but that’s worth disputing if you were actually able to take the pill out of a bottle and put it in your own mouth. And so on.

(IMPORTANT) Binding Safety
Okay friends. So there are these “les lesbian binders” on amazon (I would add pics but idk how to do that on mobile so bear with me). THESE BINDERS ARE SHIT AND WILL FUCK YOU UP.
So early in my “am I trans” journey, I started with these binders. I was working a shitty job (y'all don’t even know like it’s some movie-worthy shit) and I had like no money. But these binders were like $5-$15 EACH. And I was like “fuck yeah gonna get me a chest I love at an affordable price” well, I did. But it came at a greater cost. Those binders don’t stretch. They are the equivalent of wearing ace bandages. AND I WORE THEM EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR SIX MONTHS. at one point I thought “you know what’s a fucking fantastic idea? IF I WORE TWO BINDERS ON TOP OF EACH OTHER” given they were both the shitty “les lesbian binders”. And, of course, I had hot flashes and felt like I was going to puke and all that good stuff. But I mean it was worth it right? No. It was not worth it. It royally fucked me up. I had bruises all over my chest and ribs, and when I say bruises I mean my entire chest was covered with purple and blue and occasionally black splotches. I go running (without the binder of course) and I can barely breathe, my lungs/ribs can’t expand as much as they used to. Now they can only expand as much as the binder constricted them to. I can only breathe in short/shallow breathes to where I get so light headed constantly. AND THATS WITHOUT THE BINDER. I used to be able to hold my breath for 2.5 minutes and run at least 2 miles without stopping (yeah I was healthier but I also had the ability to expand my lungs so much).
You’re probably thinking “but it could be worse” yeah it could be I could’ve broken a rib. Thank god I didn’t. Ive worn sports tape (Also a bad idea don’t do that) and those binders feel exactly like that.
So please, I beg of you, don’t buy those shitty binders and don’t use ace bandages and don’t use sports tape. Please save your future self. I know it’s hard, trust me I go through it everyday, but YOUR SAFETY COMES FIRST. GC2B and Underworks are great companies created by transguys that make great quality binders that are super comfy and safe. If you need the money just ask the transguy/trans masculine community like me and some other people will go out of our way to give you money for a safe binder. Please.
