Virgil and Logan have been letting Roman indulge in Frozen for a bit. So the two decided to ask Thomas for help for Roman's birthday.

"Ok, so I need you to imagine like—a big body of ice." Said Virgil.

"I mean, I can try.." Thomas answered him, confused. Suddenly, there's a crash nearby and the scenery of the mind palace's extra place became the outside world. And..

Logan took off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose as the three were on a platform of ice.

"... When we said 'big body of ice' I did not mean an iceberg, Thomas." said the left brain.

There's a few screams and yelps before Patton and Roman slide down on another thick ice disk next to the trio's platform. Thomas frantically switched over to the two.

"WHAT IN THE GREAT HEAVENS IS THIS?!" The dramatic side exclaimed.

"We're gonna dieee!!" said the sweater-clad father.

"Guys, calm down—"

Somehow, they were seperated from the two logical thinkers onto a massive lake made by the melted iceberg. Roman's subconscious creativity somehow caused the ice to turn into a boat. The platform hit the edge and the three fell down into an empty and shallow canal. The boat landed capsized with the three beside it. They got out before it landed, yes.

"I'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE!!! Patton, we're gonna have to survive in the wiiiiiild!" Roman wailed dramatically. There seems to be a ship nearby, frosted in the ice. Next to it is their actual house. And in front of the door are Virgil and Logan, stifling laughter from watching the two being overdramatic. Thomas walks over to the two while Roman and Patton seem to be.. Preparing to live in the wilderness.

"Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable! How dense are the two that they'd immediately jump to a wilderness-life mindset when the door is just mere steps away—"

"Lo, calm down, it's just—wheeze—hilarious."

Virge not being good at summoning/shapeshifting because it's hard for his anxious mind to concentrate enough to make it happen, is an s-tier headcanon imo.

So lets make it analogical.

Logan isn't good at summoning/shapeshifting, either, because he gets too caught up in the logic behind it.

Roman can summon something imaginary, or something he's never seen before, with ease.

Logan has to spend hours researching what he wants to summon. Because if he can't picture it in his mind, if he doesn't understand the mechanics of how it works and why, then it never comes out right when he tries. Sometimes, nothing happens at all.

Neither of them are very good at connecting with the Imagination to make things happen (summoning objects, disappearing them, shapeshifting, etc).

The dichotomy between Janus being the primary driver of the urge to fit in whilst also being one of the ones that stands out on purpose is quite interesting to me, especially due to his impulse to protect his ego as much as possible. One would think he would try to conform and make his personality appear like the others', but he very intentionally sets himself apart. He does, however, disguise himself as the others when he thinks his own persona won't be enough to successfully either get his point across or appear trustworthy enough to believe. When in the form of himself, though, he actually explicitly attempts to make himself seem worse than he actually may desire to be at heart, not better.

He hides his real self consistently, but never in the way that he pushes Thomas to. He wants Thomas to have a support system, but doesn't outwardly care if he has one himself. He wants Thomas to succeed, no matter the cost to his own quality of life. It's reminiscent of Virgil's "putting on a dark persona is the best way to get anyone's guard up," as Janus puts up a wall of darkness and misdirection as a way to shield himself and expose the others, but while also using the faces of the others to get Thomas' guard down when he feels it's necessary. He feigns innocence just as he does evil, but hardly ever gives being himself a try.

Why should he? If he's vulnerable in any manner, he just gets torn down. When he's on the verge of tears, when he's trying to be honest, and even when he's giving a glimpse into a version of himself not shrouded in self-protection. It always ends in some sort of insult or a different reason to keep hiding. He wants to be trusted, but he's scared to act in the way that may earn him that the fastest because it's been proven to not be safe for him to do so. That way, of course, would be being genuine.

Make no mistake, Janus is still very morally gray at his core. He's supposed to be. He's supposed to do what benefits him, as well as what benefits Thomas, regardless of what the actual morals attached to the decision may be. He has proven this in various different ways. But he actively places himself in the role of the aggressor, even when he would seemingly prefer that the conversation be handled in a calmer manner.

Now that he's accepted and the others are starting to get to know him more, his facade is starting to fall. They're starting to see more of his truth, and why he hides so much of it from him. The question remains of how Janus will react to being discovered, and just what will it take to bring his genuine personality out for everyone else to see?

For one thing it's just a very good, funny split-second gag. For another, as someone who wears glasses and occasionally needs to wear a blast suit at work, I need to thank them for the incredibly realistic representation

Roman just instinctively knows the look that each of the sides has before they're seconds from crying their eyes out. He doesn't know how he knows, he just does and there is nothing he can do to stop the sharp tug in his chest at the sight of those looks.

He knows that Patton always smiles, his eyes glossy behind his glasses.

He knows that Virgil clenches his fists, digging his nails into his palms.

He knows that Logan pinches the bridge of his nose, turning his face away so that nobody can see.

He knows that Remus rocks himself with his entire body in an effort to distract himself.

For a while he didn't know what Janus did before he cried, for a long time he wasn't even sure if Janus even could cry given his snake eyes. But...
