my 600 follower giveaway for @anpan-chan! thereâs a pretty high chance that these will move to twitter from now on so if you arenât following me there yet Iâd recommend doing so!
âN'yans why didnât you use Dissipation for extra Energy Drains or Chain Strategem for more DPS?â
They were already on cooldown, thatâs why!
"i don't condone emet-selch's actions, i just think he's a very well written antagonist" and why you're wrong:
the moment a fascist is written as a tragic and sympathetic figure, the writer has already failed
you think nazis irl dont think theyâre the heroes of their own stories? that theyâre unsung protagonists in a world that will never understand them? i can assure you every white supremacist out there is already convinced theyâre fighting for an ~old world they must restore~
i can also assure you every one of them doesnât see non-white people as people, as alive, therefore what they do isnât murder. ive literally seen people say emet-selchâs situation as âwhale vs krillâ as if dehumanization of this scale isnât the mentality REQUIRED for nazism to justify itself.
am i saying that by liking emet-selch youâre suddenly a right winger nazi apologist? no. but iâm saying you just bought into a little bit of propaganda disguised as a real tragedy.
whether the MSQ starts dispelling his lies eventually is to be seen, but as it is nobody can deny that he was written to be sympathetic⊠and yall NEED to see thatâs actually not a good thing for a character of this caliber.
I get your point op, but I donât agree with it.
Because letâs be honest- the story does not view Emet-Selch with sympathy for his actions. His motives, sure, I can sympathize with his motivation to bring back a world of paradise that was lost the same way I can sympathize with people who put their faith in the Nazis cause they promised economic revival (or people who voted for a certain president in the states for similar promises.) But honestly, thats part of being human; most humans, even those who are racist or serial killers or the like, honestly believe something that is tragic or that we can sympathize with.
I mean, hell, if there is a man who is mentally ill in some way and believes heâs getting messages from god and it drives him to do awful things, I can sympathize with the tragedy of his circumstances. I can see the tragedy in the illness that led him to believe such a thing and cause harm to people.Â
But does that mean suddenly his actions are okay? Of course not! Just because you can sympathize or view someoneâs circumstances as tragic does not mean you excuse their actions.
Similarly, does FFXIV ever become an apologist for his actions? Does anyone who isnât an Ascian look at what he says and say âOh, well now that I know your reasoning I guess we really are worthless and you should step on us.âÂ
No! Alphinaud directly says that their lives are worth just as much as the Ascians even if they are not the same, and narratively speaking we triumph over the Ascians despite being âlesserâ in their eyes- its a narrative affirmation that the lives of the multiple worlds are worth just as much.
Even Emet-Selchâs final moments where he asked his people to be remembered, its said with acceptance. Given that he was Tempered by Zodiark, it may have even been his last moment where he wasnât driven by the need to bring the worlds back together- and he doesnât bemoan losing to us, or some other âants should not defeat meâ. All he asks is that the people from before us, people who (its basically stated) that we once were a part of.Â
If he and the few others who could remember the world as it once was are gone, who will remember all those sacrificed to Zodiark and Hydaelyn? His last request is that we remember them, the good and the bad.
Nowhere in the FFXIV narrative is Emet-Selchâs empire-building validated or endorsed.Â
And if we canât sympathize with villains or make villains tragic- hell, how the hell is an author supposed to make a realistic story that we can connect with?
Of course, the villains we write think theyâre the Heroes of their own stories a lot of the times - thatâs human nature. Thatâs real life. As you said yourself- ANzis thought they were right. Obviously, they werenât, but if we do not acknowledge that there were circumstances that made their rise âtragicâ or âsympatheticâ to some people, how do we prepare people for when they met them in real life?Â
If youâve only ever heard Nazis as pure evil incarnate, anything less than that will be excused because âthey arenât really Nazis. Thereâs no way they could do what they did.â
You may disagree with that⊠treatise I just wrote, but thatâs my kneejerk response.
(and for the record, Emet-Selch is not my type and I did not find him that attractive so none of what I said was motivated by the people your warning is for; unless you meant metaphorically in which case uhhhh I think Im still in the clear???.)
Thatâs a whole lot of bad faith goal-post moving, there buddy.

After what may be a year I finally upload something to this blog.
And itâs a shitpost.

Emet-Selch: Remember usâŠand know that we livedâŠ
Me: :( wow how sad, I actually feel bad.
- 2 months later -
Me: actually you know what, fuck your âremember usâ, you inflicted similar cataclysmic loss and suffering upon millions, all because you didnât consider them 'wholeâ enough. Dozens, maybe hundreds of civilizations were wiped out directly by your hands, and youâre gonna tell us to remember you? The fuck out of here. Who is going to remember them, asshole? You donât fucking know, all of those fragmented souls, across different worlds of experience, the parts now are probably greater than the whole for what they all have known and lived could have amounted to making them much greater and more whole than anything they couldâve known in any other form. 'Remember usâ. Iâm gonna remember that you were a little bitch.
Emet-Felch who? I donât remember anyone by that name.
Prompt #2: Bargain
She folded her arms over her chest, a scowl settling onto her face. âI donât like it.â
Kihtâaâs patience was already wearing thin. He folded a fist up and planted it on his hip. âYou donât have to like it, Shofie, you just have to agree to it.â
They stood inside of Rhenâs lavish office, the entirety of the room designed to impress guests. Kihtâa was unimpressed, however, and remained irritable and bristly as ever. Rhen was seated casually in his chair, his feet kicked up onto the desk, his face propped up on one hand as he watched the exchange between the pair.
Shofie looked to Rhen for an answer, but his face was set in itâs usual stoic, calm, unreadable countenance. He wasnât going to give her an easy out on this.
She scrunched her face up into a pout, and focused on the green bottle across the room intently, not wanting to look at either of the men. Both men allowed her a moment of silence as she mulled over her options. Kihtâa was there to help them deal with the stolen amulet. Kihtâa was an astonishingly accomplished mage in his own right, and he knew about the amulet and how dangerous it was, and he knew better than anyone else how to contain it, to safely handle it. Even Shofie, for all her research on the subject, had learned only that it was dangerous to handle, and it required a seal of magic to be dealt with safely. The amulet had been entrusted to The Wolves for safekeeping, but before they could claim it from their contact for storage in their vault, itâd been intercepted and stolen from the courier. They needed to get it back from the thief whoâd stolen it, presumably before they used it and caused even more trouble.
Shofie frowned more, her jaw flexing as she ground her teeth. The green bottle was half-full.
Kihtâa, powerful as he was with magic, also wasnât very suited for fighting, and needed protection to even get the amulet. He needed their help, much as he hated to ask her, of all people, for it. Shofie hated that she was the one getting roped into doing it. There really werenât many people better suited to protecting people than she was, and they both knew it.
âUgh.â She relented, bring her eyes up to Kihtâa. Heâd never taken his eyes off her, waiting for her decision. âYouâre an absolute prick, you know that, right?â
She heard a soft snort from Rhen. Shofie never really was one to pull punches, if she didnât like someone, they knew it. Shofie definitely did not like Kihtâa. She unfolded her arms, and extended her hand, making a big show of it. âFine! Fine. Iâll play nice. Happy?â Kihtâa stepped toward her, towering over her, taking her offered hand. âAlright. You protect me, and Iâll make sure the amulet is sealed.â
She crushed his hand as she shook it. He flinched but didnât withdraw from her. She spoke between gritted teeth.Â
âBargain struck, Kihtâa Nbolo. But if I find out this is a trick, Iâll kill you myself, assuming the amulet doesnât first.â He looked offended. âUgh, please, Iâve better things to do than steal from you and yours.â
He gave Rhen a wary glance. âEspecially yours.â
