it really is amazing how the pinterest school of character-informed visual design completely overrides artists' basic ability to recognize when they're drawing a racial caricature. of course the obvious answer is "they don't think about it" followed by "they don't care" but like okay I'll just be more clear what I'm talking about: there's a new character in the latest half life vr series. said character is represented by an in-game model that looks like this

we can all agree this is an asian person right. like it's not stereotyping or race science You guys can all tell this model has monolids.

that being said: you can also tell what features this character does not possess! ie: gaunt cheekbones, "slanted" upturned eyes, a dramatic widow's peak, or a pointy angular nose. in fact most of this dude's features resemble that of someone pretty fit and well rounded out, if anything probably a little underfed and tired (in line with the state of most citizens in hl2).

so then with that in mind tumblr becomes the perfect population to provide data on what happens when you show an asian dude to a bunch of white art students who learned how to draw asian people from ATLA and ask them to recreate what they're looking at. As you might imagine they do not succeed in doing anything other than pissing me off very badly when I go looking for art of this specific character and find racist crumbs on the floor. at this point it isn't even an art improvement thing, I really think some people need to completely re-assess their pre-conceived notions of what entire racial groups look like stereotypically in their minds' eye and just... like... try drawing the reality in front of you for a second. I promise once you acknowledge the reality you can go right back to figuring out how to stylize faces but you need the reality First and not the stereotype.
