A creative fandom event dedicated to appreciating the Jedi, taking place during the entire month of June! Each week will feature two prompts, around which people can create fanwork (of any kind – fic, art, cosplay, edits, anything you can think of) or meta focusing on the Jedi and the Jedi Order. All eras and continuities are welcome; OCs, established characters, doesn’t matter – it just needs to be about appreciating the Jedi!

Rules:

If you are participating, please tag your work/meta with #jedi june and/or @ this blog so that I will see it and reblog it here. All work must be your own. Feel free to crosspost it off-site.

This is an appreciation event, focusing on what we love and enjoy about the Jedi – not what we don’t. This is not the place to air your grievances with the Code, take potshots at the Council, prop certain Jedi/certain eras of Jedi up at the expense of others, or disparage the Jedi Order or their philosophy (including the concept of non-attachment) and way of life in any way. You are free to do that on your own time if that’s your thing, but it has no place within this event.

AUs and crossovers are allowed, with caveats: again, the purpose of this event is to appreciate the Jedi as Jedi, so sticking your favorite Jedi characters in something like a modern AU or making them all Sith or Mandalorian is not really within the spirit of this event. However, AUs such as making a non-Jedi character a Jedi, having a character survive their canon death, giving a character a different teacher or padawan, or killing Palpatine off-screen in an unspecified yet embarrassing and painful manner, would all be perfectly fine. Use your best judgement to determine whether an AU fits the spirit of the event or not.

On non-attachment: in a general sense, attachment refers to grasping, clinging, possessiveness, jealousy, and the "I can't live without you"/"I will burn down the galaxy before I risk losing you" attitude. See this post and this post for more information. A romance can certainly exist without these things, so you can certainly write Jedi in relationships for this event!

Please tag any spoilers up to two weeks after the relevant content has aired.

Following the prompts is encouraged, but not required. Any sort of pro-Jedi content is encouraged all year month long, and if tagged (and following the rules), will be reblogged.

what's your process for painting? every artist has a slight different method and I like learning about it :3 (I don't have much skill in drawing; I like to think my specialty lies in the written arts rather than visual arts lol)

Hey hey hey! Thank you for asking!! I’m honestly trying to rebuild my painting muscles bc I’m very out of practice 🥀 and to explain what I mean, here’s the timelapse for one of the Lee week studies from The Devil Rides Out -

This one was basically a struggle from start to finish haha, underdrawing was too big and I was all over the place, but we got there eventually. I tend to have a hard time eliminating/letting go of the line art, so I’ve been just going right over it from the jump so I don’t get stuck.

I started with this nice middle tone purple bc that movie is very… purple to me? Actually, here’s the reference image -

Purple, right? As you can see, the skin color I pick in the beginning is waaaaay too bright and then too warm, so I mess around a bit and try to block in some of the shadows, but that color I picked is messing up all the other color choices I’m making, to I get in and take it down a bit with a color thats really close to the background.

I like to use big textured brushes and lay down big areas of a color with a light touch so that the color underneath still comes through. I definitely get in there and eyedrop colors here and there, but I tend to work more like I’m drawing with pastels or chalk than with paint, thats just how I worked for years of life drawing! It helps me keep things from getting too muddy (it still happens though).

I can get really caught up noodling in a zoomed in area and forget I’m painting a planes of a face and then I’m cooked until I put it down and give my eyes and brain a rest haha I did that a few times especially his nose and between his mouth and chin. I’d say I didn’t get out of the ugly/trust the process phase until around the 2 minute mark. At that point, while I was still going in and sort of reconfiguring areas, I was more focused on controlling values and hues. I’m going into the areas between lights and shadows and either softening the transition or cutting in a harder edge. I’m also going over while areas once in a while with a big swoop of the brush to warm it up or tone it down if I feel like I’ve put in too much contrast.

some things I’m constantly doing/working on:

-hard and soft edges

-paying attention to warm and cool areas

-staying zoomed out and looking at the whole image

Most importantly, I’m resisting the urge to overlay the image I’m studying onto my canvas. I don’t need to torture myself with how close or how far off I got. I’m happy with the likeness, the colors, and the mood!
