Himmel being the dead wife that haunts the narrative is kinda funny actually
It's honestly so fucked up that there is a Himmel statue in every single town that Frieren visits, that kind of love is so heartbreaking and pure and comforting. He wanted to comfort her and be remembered and take care of her even in death. And it hurts so much that they have to separated by death, but it's also, it doesn't matter that he's dead, his feelings for her surpassed his lifetime. Whenever you see a Himmel statue, it's like he's right there anyway, so there is no opportunity to grieve him because he's right there and he cares so much.
I'm sure this has been talked about plenty but I'm still awestruck at how well Frieren handles Himmel and Frieren's relationship. I have never seen the 'character haunts the narrative' story beat done to such effectiveness.
Frieren's regret is that she didn't know Himmel before he was gone- but he exists in everything Frieren does without her fully realizing it. Frieren is a fundamentally different person and we *know* it is mostly thanks to Himmel's influence. The constant flashbacks, the way in which Frieren's logic and everyday routines have been altered by his memory. She collect spells because he and the others complimented the mundane, random spells she had found. The way that instead of her master, Himmel is the person who the monsters choose to immitate.
The flashbacks too, are so so potent in characterizing who Himmel was- not only in regards to Frieren, but in regards to Himmel as the hero. The person who lead his group to kill the demon king. The person who did everything in his power to help those around him. The person who was so clearly in love with Frieren but understood intimately that Frieren would not love him in the same regard and even worse, would be walking a very long and lonely path.
Hell, it's at the start of every chapter, in which time is only kept by the years before and after Himmel's death.
It all comes back to him, in the end
Thinking about my boys Jace and Cregan (again) ❄️🔥
*Staring over the wall*
Cregan: Starks don't forget their oaths, my prince
Cregan: We’re a team now, Ride or die
Jace, not paying attention: Yeah, I’d totally ride you
Cregan: .... What?
Jace: What?
Things Cregan and Baela have in common: both look like they want to jump Jace's bones.
I don't blame them.
…
it’s starting
"hey my bf and I saw you from across the tavern and we really dig your vibe. dw he's a switch"
*in Andrew Garfield's voice* I AM A PROPHET
baela come get your fiancé before HE gets a fiancé
rhaenyra: it was called. . .a song of ice and fire.
jace: so you're saying i should marry cregan stark.
rhaneyra: what?
jace: what?
Excuse me, my prince asked for no pickles.
Jace: 😍 Cregan: 🤨
It's just so funny to me that Jace was shooting his shot so hard and Cregan was not getting it.
Jace: "You know what I am." Cregan: "My prince." Jace: *siiiiigh*
Prince Jacaerys, the moment he set foot on Winterfel and met Lord Cregan Stark
one egregious thing the game of thrones show misses out on is that the stark kids are CONSTANTLY thinking abt each other!! there isn’t like a single POV chapter from any of them where they don’t long for their siblings!! Jon wants to have a son and name him Robb!! Bran wants to be a bird so him and his siblings can live in a nest together!! Sansa prays for her siblings every night and makes the Winterfell castle and then gets upset bc there’s no one to throw snow at!! Needle IS Jon!! Arya’s list is her own prayer for her siblings, she doesn’t care that Joffrey is dead bc Robb is too!! Every single one of them believes that their big brother will come to save them!! there’s sm love and tenderness there and GOT missed out on lots of it bc it tries too hard for the grimdark angle without realising that the center of the stark’s story is their love for each other. anyways.
