TITLE: STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT CHAPTER 27

Chapter Summary: An unexpected visitor interrupts a late breakfast over at Red's house.

Story Summary: After suffering the loss of each their spouses, neighbors Red Forman and Kitty Halpert come up with a sleeping arrangement so that neither one of them have to face a lonely night in their empty houses again.The arrangement causes quite a buzz in their small town as well as within their families.

Red’s daughter Jackie claims she’s never seen him happier. However, Kitty’s son, Eric who is going through his own marital troubles, does not like or trust Red because of Red’s darker past. And though Red gets the approval of Eric’s son, as well as Eric’s best friend and Kitty’s adopted son Steven Hyde, Eric’s dislike for Red does anything but lessen.

Still Red and Kitty continue to spend their nights-and their days-together, and as they learn more about each other their bond grows stronger. Could an unconventional sleep arrangement lead the way to a second chance at love?

what do you think eric meant when he said that he feels like he's in a movie and playing a part in "eric's buddy" before buddy kisses him? this has been lingering in my mind and i'd like to see your thoughts on it :)

My take is that Eric feels like he's playing a part when he's trying to woo Donna, or be her "boyfriend".

Buddy and Eric's interaction starts with Eric's outburst: he suddenly becomes all twitchy and bothered, and exclaims that he forgot to call Donna. He's upset with himself for forgetting.

Eric and Donna have been best friends for their whole lives, and their friendship has always been easy. But now that romance is blooming between them, he suddenly feels nervous around her and second guesses everything he says or does. I think with that particular line, Eric means that he knows what people who are in love act like - he's seen his parents, his friends, characters in a movie, etc - and he tries to emulate that, but it often feels awkward and makes him wonder if he's doing it right.

Buddy had good insight when he called Eric confused.

Eric IS confused. Not about his sexuality, though. He's confused about making the transition from friends to more-than-friends with Donna.

Do you think Eric should have defended Donna against Kelso and Fez being pervs more? I kind of do.

I don't think Donna ever needed Eric to step in and defend her from their friends' perviness (or anything else). She's perfectly capable of defending herself. And she does!

And I actually think that Eric understanding and respecting that Donna can hold her own, rather than intervening like a white jedi knight all the time, shows the development he had over the course of their relationship.

Fez and Kelso (and occasionally even Hyde) make gross sexual comments to Donna with regularity throughout the show. Kelso goes even further, sometimes trying to force himself on her physically - trying to kiss her at the roller disco, touching her body inappropriately, trying to catch her in a state of undress, etc. Fez openly admits to hiding in her closet, bathroom, and underneath her bed to spy on her while she's undressed or is intimate with Eric - and once even takes an upskirt photo of her. 🤢

This was played for laughs - because ha ha, sexual harassment is so funny?? - by the showrunners, but it's very disturbing behavior. Ultimately, the show portrays Donna as being annoyed by the guys' pervy behaviors rather than feeling threatened by them or unsafe, and I think that's important context when considering your question.

Finally, I would argue that Eric does stand up for Donna over and over again, when it is important.
