Cultural Cuisine: Kyoshi Island Pt. 2

The Kyoshi Cultural Cuisine Conclusion!

The food offered to Aang when he’s first welcomed by Kyoshi Island are mostly traditional Japanese snacks, which are collectively known as wagashi (和菓子). Fun fact, all of these snacks are vegetarian-friendly. Like my Ember Island posts, each food item will be numbered and described below, along with a link to its recipe or product website in the header.

5. Nori Maki Arare (海苔巻菓子)

Nori maki arare is a type of bite-sized Japanese cracker made from glutinous rice and flavored with soy sauce, wrapped in dried nori seaweed. I don’t know why the the nori maki arare are so huge in this scene, but Kyoshi Island is known for its giant koi and unagi so maybe that’s just their thing…

6. Melonpan (メロンパン)

Melonpan is a classic Japanese sweet bread covered in a thin layer of cookie dough. Its name comes from its resemblance to various types of melon such as cantaloupe or honeydew, not from any actual melon-flavoring.

7. Dorayaki (どら焼き)

Dorayaki is a traditional Japanese dessert sandwich consisting of two small pancake-like buns made from castella with a filling of sweet red bean paste.

8. Green Tea (緑茶)

Japanese snacks are traditionally eaten with various types of green tea such as sencha (煎茶) or matcha (抹茶). In this scene, the green tea is served in a lidded Japanese tea bowl known as a chawan (茶碗).
