Final-Research Poster
How do we utilize the play of light to the fullest effect to bring about a certain mood or emotion in a 3D animation?
This project will attempt to research the relation between the emotions of a particular scene and how light and color could play a direct role in affecting the perceptions towards those emotions. Using 3D Animation as the medium, further explorations will be made to highlight how this could be used to display a transition from darker emotions such as loss, resignation and helplessness to lighter ones such as hope, determination and whimsicality.
Research poster--Initial Design Draft
Light dictates our activities, influences our frame of mind and affects the way we perceive all manner of things. (Brooker, 2003) Great lighting design has the power to grab the eye, weave emotion throughout a scene and build atmospheric tension that sparks viewers’ imaginations and through the medium of animation, the use of light could completely change the scene and transform it into something else entirely, manipulating the visual into the way the artist wills it to be. Intelligent colour choices and composition decisions also play a part in conveying messages and emphasize certain moods of the story (Kennedy, 2014).

This was to place the various visuals I had in mind in any order to form a cohesive story, as well as to figure out the base emotions and colours I wanted to show.

Figure skating has been done beautifully to an extent in 2D Animation. Yuri on Ice, an anime, is one of the prime examples as the show revolves entirely around the sport. However, how to go about translating the grace and fluidity of the sport from 2D to 3D?
Final Film Concept
An athlete at the top of their field overcoming an injury that occurs right before a very important competition. I decided to go with the sports route and settled on figure skating as that is a sport that I personally enjoy a lot, but more than that, is a challenge in and of itself to portray it in 3D Animation. It’s something that hasn’t been done a lot.
This trailer was where the initial idea of a sports related final film idea came from. This short shows the life story of the FC Barcelona and Argentinian footballer, Lionel Messi, in a quick, concise way that tells the viewers thne necessary story, and backs it up with quick, snappy visuals and transitions. I thought the transitions and colours used in this were visually pleasing, and I appreciated the way how the creators were able to tell a story from childhood to adulthood in such an efficient way.
I really liked the use of light, in this short, as well as use of metaphors and symbolism to push the film forward. Along with that, magical realism is an undercurrent theme throughout, which adds to the haunting, mystical way the plot unfolds. I wish to incorporate something similar in my final film.
