From Ruby to Silver: Taylor’s Grammys Look and the Oz Connection
If Taylor was dressing for the Chiefs that night, wouldn't it have made sense to pair the red ruby look with a gold after-party dress? Instead, she chose silver. And if you've been following the Oz theory, you know this color combination means something.
For those unfamiliar with The Wizard of Oz and the lore surrounding the silver slippers, here’s a quick breakdown:
🔹 The Original Slippers Were Silver – In L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), Dorothy’s iconic shoes weren’t ruby red—they were silver. They symbolized power, protection, and the ability to return home.
🔹 Why Did They Change to Ruby? – When MGM adapted the book into the famous 1939 film starring Judy Garland, they swapped the silver shoes for ruby slippers to take advantage of Technicolor. The vibrant red popped against the yellow brick road, making them visually striking.
🔹 Silver & Ruby as Dual Symbols – The shift from silver to ruby creates a duality in Oz’s legacy—one rooted in literary history, the other in Hollywood fantasy. In the book, silver represents a grounded, almost mystical force. In the film, ruby becomes a dazzling symbol of cinematic magic.
🔹 Taylor's Red & Silver – Given her obsession with storytelling, symbolism, and visual cues, the choice to wear ruby red at the Grammys and then silver at the after-party feels very deliberate. It mirrors the transition from Baum’s original Oz to the film adaptation.
Is she nodding to the duality of truth vs. performance? Is she dressing as both versions of Dorothy—the one from the book and the one from the movie? Either way, this only feeds the theory that she's been walking the yellow brick road all along. ✨
Would love to hear what others think—do you see the silver slippers connection here? Or do you think she just happened to choose silver for the afterparty?
It's very rare that a piece of performance art moves me to ugly, non-stop tears. The Woodsman, written by and starring James Ortiz, is a stunning and heart wrenching bare bones art piece telling the story of the love, loss, creation, and fate of the Tin Man before Dorothy drops into Oz. Only having dialog within the first seven minutes, the tale is effectively told through fiddle music, unintelligible vocal sounds, body language, and basic but very effective puppetry. In such a short amount of time, you quickly care deeply for the characters without them even uttering a word. The piece feels like a wholly American fairytale that came from the Appalachain woods. I was entranced the entire time. I highly recommend it for performance art lovers and for the Ozians who always crave lore and new interpretations of the classic Baum story.

Who remembers this 3 episode SciFi Channel miniseries from 2007? I didn't, but I'm so happy I gave it a chance! It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it. It's become one of my favorite Oz adaptations. It's weird and interesting, and a little goofy at times, but I love the fresh, modern science fiction take on The Wizard of Oz. Thank you to The Oz Vlog for the recommendation!

Some lesser known Ozma (+Dorothy) illustrations from the RPT years.
I’m just sayin’, the fact that L Frank Baum was called the “Royal historian of Oz” and the books were supposedly him receiving info from Dorothy and recording it himself says a lot about the characters in his books who were “best friends”
FINISHED!! my versions of the sillays and AAUUUGHHHH im very proud of these designs very much!!
SO CUTE
Today, I'm rewatching The Wiz! This movie, like the 1939 MGM Wizard of Oz film is an staple in American culture, especially Black American culture in its own right.
It is adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name (Book by William F. Brown and Music & Lyrics by Charlie Smalls), directed by Sidney Lumet. For the film, the book was reworked by Quincy Jones and Joel Schumacher, and moves Dorothy's home to NYC and reimagines Oz as a once vibrant, decaying urban dystopia. The visuals are so incredibly rich and creative, and packed with symbolism. The music, of course, is fantastic, thanks to a star-studded Motown cast led by Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. Beloved as this film is to many, though, it is still polarizing to this day.
WARNING! Personal opions and hot takes ahead. Proceed with caution!
I honestly love the change to the environment and Oz visuals. I think moving the location to NYC was a genius idea. I love the music too, although, some of the numbers are a little bit too drawn out and slows down the movie's pacing a LOT. Now, this might be a hot take, but my biggest issue with the film is Quincy Jones' complete rewrite of Dorothy's character in order to shoehorn Diana Ross into the role. PLEASE don't get me wrong. I ADORE Diana Ross and her music! I just don't think she was right for the role of Dorothy. Her portrayal of Dorothy and her character arc don't feel believable or authentic to me. I believe Stephanie Mills, who was already Dorothy in the Broadway show was the absolute perfect Dorothy. She would have been perfect in the film as well, and I believe she was robbed.
What are your thoughts on the 1978 film version of The Wiz?
My dear Ozians across the pond, HOW DID I NOT KNOW WIZARD OF OZ PANTOS WERE A THING??! I stumbled upon this wonderful pro shot of a 2019 Easter panto at the New Royal Theater, Lincoln on youtube!
For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, pantomime, or ""panto"is a traditional British Christmas (or Easter) play that is often based on children's stories. Pantomimes are performed in theaters and village halls across the country, and it is a fun and important source of income for these theaters. Panto always features slapstick comedy, gender role reversals, audience participation, and singalongs to popular music, and looks like a thoroughly fun night out! I'd love to see one in person someday! #panto #wizardofozpanto #wizardofoz
