After school care pulled me aside about my child dropping an f-bomb “without remorse” and I put on my concerned face and nodded a bunch.
Apparently he was building something with a younger kid “who really looks up to him and is just starting to make friends” and said “Hey, you’re really fucking good at this.” which is, in my estimation, really a parenting victory.
I absolutely failed at doing this:
“bits to use in everyday conversations”
A democratic socialist does literally anything in the US and the far right people freak out. Being an open democratic socialist politician in this country is to be accused of being an evil communist for enjoying a sandwich.
Democratic socialist politicians are also more likely to be of many different cultures so there’s also frequently the racism
Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan won his democratic primary on the radical and crazy idea of “groceries and healthcare should be affordable and corporations shouldn’t be able to buy off politicians” and republicans immediately got islamophobic and also called him a communist
i know i said i did not want to talk about the nolan odyssey but i do have one more nodyssey post in me. i actually think the idea of odysseus understanding his story as existing both in and out of a historic timeframe is a fun way to handle the liminality caused by the story being part of an extensive oral tradition. however having him say "our age of bronze is collapsing" is perhaps not the way i would have done that
World Cup Soccer, as played in rural Japan
Unbeknownst to everyone on Earth, an energy pulse from deep space washes over the planet. The unending transmission is slowly rewriting human DNA, transforming everyone from the inside out. After a week the results are beginning to show.
“Hey did you notice… that you don’t seem to need your depression meds as much anymore?” Linda said tentatively.
“Yeah”, Marcus said, surprised. “Why, does it show? Should I go back on them?”
“No, no, it’s more that I don’t need mine anymore either. And neither do most of my friends.”
“Well, it’s certainly not because the world has gotten better,” he replied while scanning the news. He looked away from his phone. “Although… well, did you see that article in the Post that cancer patients are recovering far faster than usual? Especially the ones that never used to recover at all?”
“Weird.” Linda replied.
It took over two years for someone to notice that a specific string of genes on a specific chromosome, one we share with lobsters, had gone from inactive to active. No one knew how or exactly when… at least, no one knew Earth.
Human DNA was suddenly self-repairing.
Welcome back
