Mace Windu did not owe Anakin kindness or softness. Mace Windu is a Motherfucker Who Gets The Job Done, he doesn’t have time to coddle Anakin’s ego. But someone needed to sit Anakin down at some point and show that Mace’s action are not rejection, but protection.

“He’s too old/attached to be trained”= He is going to have a Bad Time with the current structure of the order and needs more/better support.

“You don’t get the title of master”= you were knighted too young and this war has caused all the padawans of the order to mature too quickly. You haven’t done the things that would earn you the title of master. We are in precarious political standing, so you get to sit with us, but you need more time to grow.

“Don’t come to arrest Palpatine”= turning in a friend and mentor was not easy for you. Watching him be arrested is going to hurt you even more.

But of course, Anakin’s rejection sensitivity can only see all of this as malice and hate.

Mace sees the boy who has had everything ripped away from him. The boy that was lured away by the validation the order didn’t give him. I think in ROTS, it hits him all at once just how badly he and the council failed Anakin. At his core, Mace trusted Anakin. It’s too little too late, but when he asks Anakin to stay behind, he’s so earnest to right the wrong that has slipped by him. Of course the dark side was rooted in Anakin, and there was no stopping what was to come.

How would you fix the Star Wars sequels?

HI I'm so sorry it took so long to answer this! I was in the middle of moving across the country so my life has been kind of chaotic the past few weeks.

So, for the sequels, I think the biggest thing I would change is the world building. They completely reset the status quo from the prequels and OT, somehow simultaneously managing to have galactic republic and also evil empire vs band of rebels. This is really one of the biggest failures of the sequel trilogy imo, as it doesn't allow for many new developments, and it kind of makes it feel like the work that the Rebellion did all ended up being in vain, which I personally don't like. I think we need a huge shakeup in the status quo, so what I would propose is a sort of post apocalyptic vibe to the galaxy, akin to Mad Max or Fallout: New Vegas.

After all, if the Republic failed once, why would a bunch of planets be eager to join it again? I feel like different groups would be more likely to strike out on their own. Maybe there are a few systems trying to follow some sort of centralized government, but then in another corner of the galaxy you have the Hutts and different crime syndicates. There might be some planets that still cling to fascism and the Empire, and that's where Kylo Ren comes in. I'm not sure whether I would still make him the son of Han and Leia, but I'd keep most of his personality traits the same as this kind of man child who idolizes the empire. I also like the idea of this new band of Empire followers kidnapping children and raising them from birth, which is where Finn would come in. I genuinely think that's a fascinating backstory and could make for a great character arc.

Meanwhile, I would not make Luke leave the Jedi order. He has successfully started a new Jedi school, but they don't have the same power they once did in the galaxy. Instead, they're more a wandering band of people who do their best to help others and foster peace and diplomacy between factions. They are small and ragtag, but still there. I do love the way Mark Hamill played sequels Luke as kind of a cooky old man, so I'd keep that aspect of his character.

I'd still have Rey play a role as a character from a nowhere planet (and her parents would not be important, she is literally Ray Nobody in my version). She could be the audience viewpoint character, thrust from her boring life in the desert into this crazy world of all these different factions. Think Lucy from the Fallout tv series: a character who has spent her entire life in a vault and now has to journey into the real world and learn how to survive. Except I'd kind of reverse their character arcs: while Lucy has to learn that humans can't always be trusted to be honest or do the right thing, I'd start Rey off as an extremely jaded character who has to learn how to trust others and form friendships.

It's been many years since I read the Thrawn trilogy, so I can't remember all the specifics of those stories, but I do think it would have been nice to borrow some ideas from them. Thrawn as a character is fascinating, and while i'm glad he's made it to Star Wars television, he would have made a pretty compelling Big Bad for the sequel trilogy. I'd also not totally be against having Jacen and Jaina as characters in the sequels somewhere, though I'm not sure off the top of my head how they'd play into it.

Sorry to all the Mara Jade fans, but I would leave her out of the story. I see Luke remaining single in canon (but shippable with everyone in fanon). I do think he'd ditch the "no attachments" rule, though. It would be quite interesting to see a Jedi culture who are allowed to have families, just for a change of pace.

I have a lot more I could say about this sort of alternate universe I've constructed, but that's the basics of it. Visually, it would be very colorful and crazy, with a mishmash of different aesthetic influences. If the OT is designed to feel like a universe that is old and lived in, then this era would DEFINITELY feel that way too. Mad Max: Fury Road really is the best example I can think of.

Anyways, that's my idea! Overall, I just wish Disney had done something riskier and more unique. Even if it had been bad, at least it would have been bad in an interesting way and not a boring way.
