Here's my take on the post canon byler reunion. Will is studying art in NY, while Mike is struggling to make it as a writer. He figures maybe his novel would spark more interest if it was a comic so he reaches out to the best and only artist he has ever known, who used to be his best friend. Except it's deeper than just the comic.

when Will gets his own apartment he adopts a big dog and then maybe takes a puppy with him to care for it after finding it on the street and when Max and Lucas visit they play with them and Max loves them veryy much and Lucas is so good with dogs and this makes him want one too. ok realistically speaking i don't think Will would get two dogs. cause he's lazy. but i like the idea okay let me dream... and Max plays with Will's dogs and then Lucas gets their own as a surprise for Max's birthday and maybe call her Lady :)
