Night thoughts
These days I feel like there are a lot of people who remember me, and only a few who know me.
My best friendâs best fur-friend went missing for a few days and came home with a broken pelvis. She is a sweet, bleppy Maine Coon mix who has been there for her owner through the worst of times. She will likely have to be put down if they cannot raise the money for her surgery.

First flower ever grown in space bloomed today!
Yay!
Happy birthday, space flower!

KIRK IS HOLDING A ZINNIA. THE SAME FUCKING FLOWER.
FUCKING NASA MAN
No. Nononono. You donât understand.Â
I am so mad about this. Like, not like I wanna kill someone, but mad, as in, hysterical?
They wanted to answer questions about plants in space, right? How biology and botany would work in space. Because then who knows? We could grow crops in space, or fix the atmosphere. Or create the perfect biome for plants that are now extinct. Who fucking knows, right?
They could have taken a food crop. Wheat, maybe. Or rice. Something they could observe to see if it would be possible to solve a food shortage or whatever. Maybe a small apple tree to see if it would bloom, and then see if there could be a way to make it fruit.Â
Or, you know, go the genetics route and take a sweet pea. See if zero gravity does anything to how genes are passed on. Mendel did it in a shed, why not a tin shed in outer space, right? Oh the possibilities.
Was it so wrong to take the zinnia? No, of course not. In my little horticultural brain, I thought, oh how lovely! A splash of colour in the emptiness of space. Something bright and cheerful, something that gives hope. That must have been it, right?Â
But no.Â
SOMEONE went, âNah, mate, hereâs an episode of Star Trek where Kirk is holding a ZINNIA in a SPACE DESERT.â
I could scream. I donât know if I love or hate these fucking nerds. Oh my gods.Â
Such a good rant. But Cosmonauts and Astronauts have been been eating food grown in space for many years now, and people have been sending seeds into space since 1946. Then there were the 1971 500 moon trees. Lots of info and background at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plants_in_space.
Plants already grown in space over the last 45 years include:
Arabidopsis (Thale cress)
Mizuna lettuce
Super dwarf wheat
Apogey wheat
Brassica rapa
Rice
Tulips
Kalanchoe
Flax
Onions, peas, radishes, lettuce, wheat, garlic, cucumbers, parsley, and dill
Lettuce and Cinnamon basil
And the zinnia wasnât the first flower grown in space, either. That would be the tulips, back in 1979, per http://www.airspacemag.com/space/growing-pains-4148507/?no-ist=
Still, Energiaâs scientists were so impressed with the psychological effects exo-gardening had on cosmonauts that by the time Salyut 6 was launched in the late 1970s, the Soviets had begun to think of the research in a new wayâas a tool to boost crew morale. In 1979, when Valeri Ryumin and Vladimir Lyakhov struggled with loneliness and depression during their unprecedented half a year in space, Energia sent interior decorationsâflowering tulips and a mature kalanchoe plantâto the station via a resupply vehicle. Ryumin and Lyakhov were cheered immediately. They named the kalanchoe âlife treeâ and made sure it was always in the picture during television broadcasts from the station. Later, aboard Salyut 7 in 1982, Valentin Lebedev observed that gardening calmed him. âI water the plants regularly, happily,â he wrote in his diary. âI spoil them; I am too generous with water.â
Yet despite the ancillary emotional benefits, the primary goal of raising crops from seeds in microgravity was not to be easily reached. A long road lay ahead for scientists. They were to be frustrated by plantsâ fickleness, hampered by a series of unsuccessful greenhouse designs, and thwarted by unforeseeable factors and events.
