Cancer Is One Worry Elephants Can Feel Free to ForgetĀ
Elephants are one of natureās biggest improbabilitiesāliterally. Their colossal bodies somehow manage to defy the odds: Despite the fact that their cells outnumber humansā by a factor of about 100, elephant cancer mortality is somehow only a third of ours.
This baffling inconsistency has plagued scientists for decades. It even has a name: Petoās paradox, a nod to the epidemiologist who first noted the phenomenon in the 1970s, studying humans and mice. But new research published today in Cell Reports shows that, to keep cancer at bay, elephants have a devious trick up their trunksāa molecular self-destruct button, reanimated from beyond the grave.

The Shuri Effect: A Generation of Black Scientists?Ā
Imagine a brilliant, young, black, female, scientist, with incredible wit, impeccable fashion, and fierceness in battle. There are a zillion things to love about Black Panther, but seeing Letitia Wright embody Shuri floored me. I didnāt realize just how enormous a void such there was in popular culture until I saw it start to fill.
Black Panther blew my mind. Shuri made my heart sing.
Shuri gave the middle finger to her older brother, King TāChalla, at the beginning of the film, but more importantly she gave the finger to every stereotype Iāve been battling. As a young(ish), black, female marine biologist from the magical land of Brooklyn, this character brought me incredible joy. And, if Iām honest, a bit of relief.
It gets weary, being the only the black scientist in the room. It gets frustrating being met with shocked faces and being accused of lying when I tell strangers am a marine biologist, yes, with the Ph.D. and all. It gets heavy. The weight and honor of representing your people (and often everyone not white), of making a way for others, of the push for perfection. And it gets lonely, being a black scientist in America.
Shuri, my favorite Disney princess! <333

Millions of deaths are prevented every year due to vaccinations. But why are there still people who donāt trust them? Find out in our NEW VIDEO: https://youtu.be/b03U6BYF9L0
Note the different scales on the different sides. Even more impressive. Didnāt know chicken pox caused so many deaths before the vaccine.

"It is as strong as steel, but six times lighter. It takes 10 times more energy to fracture than natural wood. It can even be bent and molded at the beginning of the process."
Engineers at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) have found a way to make wood more than 10 times times stronger and tougher than before, creating a natural substance that is stronger than many titanium alloys.
āThis new way to treat wood makes it 12 times stronger than natural wood and 10 times tougher,ā said Liangbing Hu of UMDās A. James Clark School of Engineering and the leader of the team that did the research, to be published on February 8, 2018 in the journal Nature. āThis could be a competitor to steel or even titanium alloys, it is so strong and durable. Itās also comparable to carbon fiber, but much less expensive.ā Hu is an associate professor of materials science and engineering and a member of the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute.
