Love the moment in System Collapse when Ratthi makes a joke about round hatches being scarier than square ones, SecUnit decides to fact check this by searching its entire media library for scary things coming out of doors and doing statistical analysis on the shape of the doors and discovers he's right, and ART goes "You wasted processing space on that?" And then ART gets sucked into participating in the inane conversation within seconds.

For anyone seeing this who doesn't know me, I'm Jack, an autistic and physically disabled trans college student. I live with my partner Tobi, who is also disabled, and our dog and cat.

I'm not going to be able to pay our rent in July. Job-hunting hasn't been going well, and I've been relying on student loans to pay the bills, but those have run out. I should be okay in September; the next round of loans will come in and I am working hard to have a job and/or reliable self-employment income by then. I just need help getting through the next month or two.

Others have said it and I'm gonna say it too: This film is beautiful.

This movie is so colorful and it's like a breath of fresh air in today's "blockbuster" movie era where everything is dull, washed out, too dark, desaturated, or blue. The space scenes especially are full of warm colors and hues. Planet Adrian? fucking gorgeous. The STARS even have color, which is actually astronomically accurate thank you very much, stars are not all white, they range from red to orange to yellow to white to blue!! And you can SEE than in the space scenes!

Speaking of seeing, you can see every scene in this movie because it's actually well-lit because they're not trying to hide bad CGI. So much of the movie is actual real models and puppets and line work and practical effects! They don't want to hide it, they want you to see it!

And the LIGHT? Oh my god the role of light in this movie. It should be considered a character in its own right. There's a scene where Grace is looking for Rocky and the light literally guides him down the hall. Light is constantly moving and changing in this film within the same cut, it's absolutely incredible. Light is so IMPORTANT in this film. It's directional, it's dynamic, it changes colors, it's vibrant! So many modern films can't do that because of the CGI; they need flat, ambient, consistent lighting to make the modeling work easier. Not in this movie!!

Not gonna lie, I'm a little annoyed that despite the vast amount of project hail Mary spoilers I saw on tumblr in the last few weeks (and yes I know that not blocking the tag was my own fault) I did not see a single post about the huge flashing light scene in the middle of the film. Hell, it was set right in the middle of a very important plot scene. But the flashes were so bright and so intense that I had to close my eyes and cover them with my hands for I think nearly two minutes. And I'm not even epileptic! I just get migraines. Thankfully I went to see it with a friend who could tell me what was happening in the scene.

So, I'm going to warn people who may not have seen the movie yet. When the ship is pulling away from the green planet, the music will calm down, then a bang will be heard. That's when the flashing lights start. They'll pretty pretty much keep going until there's a scene change and the audio cuts out. That's when you can open your eyes.

One thing I love about Murderbot that I don’t see talked about much is how it literally translates everything it hears. I think it’s easiest to notice with swears. This is most obvious in Fugitive Telemetry with the crew of the Lalow. They say things like “that picker” and “penis move” and “pussing corporates,” some of which confuse even the Preservation humans. But it does it all the time.

In System Collapse, Tarik says “motherless” (as opposed to something like motherfucking) and the BE corporates say things like “lame-skulled” and while you could think those are just futuristic insults as a result of linguistic drift (which they could also be), I think they’re just literal translations. It becomes more noticeable when you see how religious terms are rendered: “oh high one! Oh deity!” Which is like…sure. They could literally be saying that. But imo it makes more sense if MB is translating something they’re saying in another language.*

I think the most notable case of this is when Thiago calls Amena “my daughter.” On first read I literally thought it was just a Preservation thing but then I realized it made a lot more sense to me (a 21st century American) if he was saying something like mija but MB was just literally translating it into its archive bc that’s how it processes language.

This is also the reason for Amena’s use of Second Mom and Third Mom. It sounds kind of clunky in English but Chinese does a similar thing which sounds perfectly natural in that language (e.g. da-ge, er-ge, san-ge for first/oldest brother, second (oldest) brother, and third (oldest) brother).

Anyway! It’s a fun little detail I really enjoy about MB. There are definitely way more examples but I didn’t have time to track them all down.

I'm imagining like. space-youtube video essays but about various Incidents. murderbot is mostly pretty good at avoiding being clocked as a secunit (like. most of the time. when shit hits the fan it's not really... well. it's pretty hard to keep people safe AND keep pretending to be a human)

but would its deception hold up against the sci-fi equivalent of hbomberguy who initially was making a much smaller scale video but then kept piecing things together.....

can you imagine how much stir a video pointing out "hey I think all of these incidents are the same construct. y'know. the rogue one" would get if it was mysteriously deleted. the drama. someone would obviously point out that the guy who made the video could have deleted it himself to make it look legitimate and that would just make it worse. it's awesome
