Howdy y'all.

For anyone seeing this who doesn't know me, I'm Jack, an autistic and physically disabled trans college student. I live with my partner Tobi, who is also disabled, and our dog and cat.

I'm not going to be able to pay our rent in July. Job-hunting hasn't been going well, and I've been relying on student loans to pay the bills, but those have run out. I should be okay in September; the next round of loans will come in and I am working hard to have a job and/or reliable self-employment income by then. I just need help getting through the next month or two.

I once signed up to participate in a study on how depression affects memory, forgot I was meant to go do it, and when I emailed to apologise to the PhD student running it she basically told me that a) she was very used to this happening and b) the weird irony of her theories’ correctness making it very difficult to arrange proving them had by now gone from infuriating to hysterical

I went to the Grand Canyon when I was depressed and I literally forgot the whole thing. Like, the only reason I even know I was there is that I have photographs of myself standing in front of the Grand Canyon with dead eyes but i have absolutely no memory of it

People talk about depression like it’s just being sad all the time but straight up your brain stops working and sadness is just one of the many, many consequences of that

My take on the "this has been talked about extensively you're just 21" image and its context (which I am aware of) is that I think a lot of the people getting pissed off about it are coming from an understandable place but there really is something to be said about the idea that people keep diving headfirst into queer discourses while refusing to look at what's been said about it before. You can learn SO MUCH about an issue by seeing how far back it was being discussed (probably way further back than you think!) and how the circumstances of a given era affected how that discussion was done and the conclusions people draw. The phrase itself is very thought-terminating-cliche but I moreso see it as an invitation to develop a more informed take that can better hold up to scrutiny by actually seeking out the discussions being had before your time.

If you're 21 you never lived in a pre-internet world. Communication, discussion, and debate are so commonly done online now that it genuinely takes some extra effort to even fathom how people were discussing these issues before the internet but it is reductive and naive to think that nobody ever did and that no progress was made in this discussion before your time that you can learn from.

So many of our struggles are not new. While details have changed over time, so many of the core issues we face as queer people and as marginalised people in general have been faced, fought, talked about, and written about in so many forms through so many eras.

The easy thing to do when you've noticed something seems fucked up is to assume that you're the first person who has noticed this because obviously if other people knew about it they would have done something, right???? But when you focus all your energy on starting from scratch you miss out on so many perspectives of people who came before you. So many of the problems we have with Trump were problems people had with Bush and Reagan and we can learn a lot from how people in those days fought back. They were all people just like you and likely had many similar struggles, and you have the benefit of being able to see what the long term consequences were to their decisions and use that to inform your own choices.

Consider that there's probably a reason some of these older discussions have been harder to find and use that as motivation to seek them out. Actually find out what people were saying about those movies when they came out instead of assuming that every person who watched them was cool with all the transmisogyny.

They keep burning our literature and preventing us from organising BECAUSE they don't want us to be able to build upon prior knowledge, they don't want to let us have any giants whose shoulders we can stand on so we think that there's nothing beyond the tall facades they've built around us and we waste all our energy stacking wobbly ladders on top of each other.

Talk to older people. See how your understanding of documented history differs from their memories of it. Neither of you will be 100% right but you'll both have a more complete picture of the truth if you engage with each other.

Please put on your N95s. The same ones used for covid will filter particulate pollution. I lived in a city with yearly winter pollution levels like this. If you can pay for it, you might as well get an indoor air filter to sleep in.

Make sure you get the best rated furnace filters you can. If getting all those is too expensive, even one of those furnace filters taped tightly to a box fan (to force the air through the filters so it doesn't come in through the cracks) can help pretty substantially in a small room.

Watched a documentary about abuse and advice one guy said to give children was, "Tell them that if someone is hurting them, to tell someone - and don't just tell one person. Tell as many people as possible, and keep telling as many people as possible until the abuse stops." and i really liked that

Bc so many ppl focus on the idea of telling A Trusted Adult, but even a well-meaning individual can fuck up and let abuse fall through the cracks or not know what to do

Whereas if a child tells LOADS of adults AND other kids, there's far less opportunity for an abuser to do damage control

Consistently telling their story and spreading it around disempowers the abuser to control and coerce the flow of information, or to utilise gaps and weaknesses in systems of reporting or welfare to isolate the child

Just really good advice. Not suprised I don't hear it more often.

Not related to anything except I thought it seemed like a story you might enjoy: yesterday my four-year-old at work found a pink snake and a black snake and decided they were getting married, so while the pink snake slithered down the aisle I hummed "here comes the bride" and then performed a brief ceremony for them. (She didn't seem to notice/appreciate my "You may now hiss the bride", but that was more for me anyway.) Immediately after she said "Let's do the marriage again!", and this time when she brought her snake to mine she made it say "Hello. We're gonna have wonderful adventures together" which HONESTLY might be one of the sweetest things I've ever heard said at a wedding

The single most useful edit you can do before you send anything to anyone: Read it out loud. The whole thing. Every sentence. You will hear every place the rhythm breaks, every word that doesn't belong, every line of dialogue that no human being would actually say. Your eye skips over problems because it already knows what you meant to write. Your ear doesn't lie. It catches everything. It is embarrassing how much a single read-aloud will fix. Do it alone. Do it in a weird voice if it helps. just do it.
