If Still Thinking About... is about someone finally learning how to let grief go from their identity...
Then The Flawless Defect is about what could happen if society doesn't have the same opportunity to do so, after the fact.
Ivan, you scoundrel, you. Going through so much and thinking something is so pathologically wrong with you. When it's so so backwards.

that also gets me thinking about history in MECHFIA.
the Old World is nearly perfectly preserved underwater. everything that has been captured digitally, electronically, it's all still there, and it was designed to survive in the water. it was designed to be timeless, to quell the fear that with nothing physical anymore, there would be nothing left in the historical record. they made sure it would last.
but there isn't the technology to access it. there is no more AI, no more electricity, no more computer chips. it's all been preserved, but it can't be opened. and so in that sense, history has been lost, which is what makes it so easy for the Society to rewrite it.
This is soooo fascinating to me because in my story after tides Did Their Thing and swallowed pretty much every geographical mass aside from east and south Asia — nothing survived at all.
Infrastructure, buildings, tech. None of that survived, only people did with swift intervention. (There were of course, still casualties.) So total contrast, with almost nothing being preserved.
If anything from that time period survived, before all the climate crisis and drastic changes — no one would know unless they ventured forth. Which would like result in immediate death. But they probably wouldn't find much anyway, given how violent the rip currents are.
There are no other accounts to show for history. There was a cyber war not too long after the creation of New Metrosia; that ended up wiping out 99% of ALL data on pre-metrosian world.
So there is just. No information. And if there is some; it's heavily censored present-day to the public. Censorship is incredibly prevalent through society. And if folks ask questions, it is incredibly frowned upon.
Surely if I destroy my sense of self and become a vessel for the desires of others I'll become worthy of love right. That's how it works right
The various iterations of this game are actually so varied it's ASTONISHING. Do you know how much versions of this story exists?
2018-2019: Voltron Comic
Yes. You read that correctly... it was a Voltron Comic. Wasn't happy with the adam plotline at the time, so I gave Shiro a new lover to fall in love with. He was a surgeon who worked at the Garrison and also taught classes on first aid. I can't remember what I had planned for the ending, but his signature jacket from is corruption era came from this design.
2020: Novel
Probably the briefest stage of development. Forget this ever happened. Hidden side antagonist placed beside original characters for a series where something random happens every hour in the world.
2020-2024: Animated Original Series
OC recycled with new characters and occupations. Now an animated series about a mayor who inevitably corrupts under the pressure of an ever changing climate dystopia. Not a protagonist anymore, but antagonist. By allying himself with the greater censorship of the world (and its truths) in the name of justice. Found out one of his former students ended up becoming a criminal and refugee by doing the exact things he taught her not to do or even try, and is also hunting her down too.
2024: Visual Novel
A game in which Ivan is bestowed ten different lives he could live out based upon the player's choices, with each serving a moral lesson and being drastically different from the rest. The last ending only obtained when you've obtained the rest, tying all said lessons and themes together.
2024-2025: Visual Novel
The "romance" route from said aformentioned game. Shortened to that route alone, because it was too much to tackle all at once at the time. Became a game that explores amatonormative concepts and ideas with a little bit of spice added in about change and dealing with that. Honestly, the plot is really shaky, but it's interesting to flip through the script. (Yes, that's Ivan getting chased by the cops.)
2025-Present: Visual Novel
An experimental, non-linear, game mechanic heavy, metafictional game that explores the consequences of a frictionless society. One that elevates the impassioned as pathologized or criminal on a literal, assumed, or figurative level. All explored through Ivan's eyes through multiple accounts and interactions + conflicts.
Brief dev log because I forgot to do that today. So so much writing has been done for The Flawless Defect today; my every waking moment practically is spent being super excited for this game at this point! Great great greeaaaat progress. Majority of the writing is really shaping up.
I announced a bit more about it somewhere on Instagram strangely, but I'm planning to talk more about this game on other platforms. These dev logs just won't be sufficient enough/do the game enough justice me-thinks. So I'm making plans for that!
Also, regarding progress on the game... there hasn't been much, but I'm getting back into gear. So many life events happened last week, but I'm feeling super motivated and inspired again.
In the time since I last posted though, I've mostly been creating the game's first written draft since my outline is somewhat finished (I say somewhat, because there's a tiny bit more I'm adding in). But I've been drafting using google docs, and I gotta say, I love the tabs feature. I can just drag scenes around in or out of order. Sure is story rich this whole narrative, lot of plan. I feel writing is going to take the longest! But it'll be sooo worth it.
First dev log for The Flawless Defect, oh wow. Doing a bunch of writing today, and the ending makes me weep already.
During the past few weeks though, I've mostly been gathering and centering/finalizing the impact or message of the story. As well as gathering a ton of visual inspiration for a better general feel/idea for things. That's been INCREDIBLY fun. Have I said how much I love experimental work here yet?
One of my primary inspirations of all things is the mixed-media styling that exists in The Tatami Galaxy. Have a look-see...

Generally speaking, the story is about that! It happens to also take place in a climate dystopia (ommg, just like Mechfia?!), but that's only mildly as relevant to its themes and messaging.
I'm still ironing out the story's general twists and turns! But everything centers my OC Ivan! And how increasingly, increasingly he feels more and more like the world around him is simply not prone to be mistaken enough in the wonderful year of 3006.
Everything feels eerily perfect, functional, and resound of mind... but him. Ensue psychological horror.
I love characters who are extremely hypercompetent and simultaneously massive losers
