@the-halfblood-traitor
First DnD session as a Fallen Aasimar, Iraphaes. Dragged down 20ft by a seaweed Kelpie with the option of using Necrotic shroud once a day.
Iraphaes: “No, I am not going super Saiyan on a fucking salad!”
Very amusing
Toxic fiction affects reality.
So do sharp objects. If sharp objects didn’t exist nobody would be stabbing anybody. Sharp objects affect reality. Because we have sharp objects some people stab other people.
So do genitals. If genitals didn’t exist, nobody would rape anyone via penetration. Because we have genitals, some people rape other people. There are a lot of things that affect reality, it doesn’t mean they should be removed. Also, antis don’t realize how dumb their logic sounds in reverse. Anti logic: If you age up Hermione. She’s still technically a teenager. So it’s still like wrong and gross, and you’re supporting child sex abuse...because aging her up doesn’t change the reality of how old she actually is. She is a teenager in canon. So, technically, adult fan fiction Hermione is a teenager. And no amount of aging her up is going to change that! Let’s look at that logic in reverse, shall we ;) If you de-age Castiel, so he’s a five year old child. He’s still technically an adult. So it’s like totally okay, it’s totally consensual, and not rape at all. Because de-aging Castiel doesn’t change the reality of how old he actually is. He’s an adult in canon. So, technically, five year old fanfiction Castiel is an adult. No amount of de-aging Castiel will change that! Hey, I don’t make the rules! It’s their logic. Not mine. *My tags are just going to be random problematic ships I know of. It doesn’t necessarily mean I ship all of these ships. It does mean I know of their existence. Some of these ships are definitely problematic. Some of these ships are debatably problematic. Some of these ships I’m a little grossed out by. But I’m not going to try and shame them into not writing that content. Otherwise I should shame people into throwing away any sharp objects they have in their house. To get rid of anything that could affect reality in a bad way. Not just what you dislike. But everything that has even the smallest bad affect on reality. You need knives because they’re a convenience to you? Listen Felicia some rape victims need fantasy rape smut fiction because it helps them deal with what they went through. I don’t know why. It just does. Some people are triggered by it. Some people are helped by it. Because everybody’s mind works differently. I know a person who was a victim of child sexual abuse. For some reason adult/child rape smut helps her not feel so bad about the abuse she went through. Can I explain why some people are helped by it, and some people are triggered by it? No. I don’t fully understand the psychology or neurology behind some victims finding that kind of thing helpful for them. But what I do know, is that some of them find it helpful. That’s all I need to know, to not have it banned. But sure remove that content so the victims who are helped by it can suffer. Remove something that is a helpful convenience to them, just because it bothers you. Y’all act like rape and murder didn’t exist before problematic fiction came along. And that somehow rape and murder will magically vanish if you get rid of problematic fiction. Like??? Sure removing problematic fiction might reduce real life rape and murder or child/adult totally wrong relationships. But, removing sharp objects will also diminish people being stabbed. Yet, I don’t see people shaming others for having kitchen knives in their house! Nah but shame the content creators, or the readers of those toxic fanfictions and fictions. For who all you know could be victims who have done nothing wrong, and will never rape or hurt any child in real life. Who are doing what they need to do to heal. Process their trauma in a safe way or even just enjoy it because for some reason they just do. Don’t get me wrong. Rape and child molestation is a huge problem. But the best way to reduce rape and child molestation is to educate parents and caregivers on what to look out for. Google: ‘how to protect my child from being sexually assaulted.’ That will do more to reduce child sexual assault, than trying to ban any fiction you deem problematic. Also, sometimes the parents are the rapists. So I’m sure that’s not the only solution people need to be looking at. As for rape? Teach people not to see others as lesser beings/property to satisfy their sexual desires. High levels of cultural and social misogyny in a country can correlate with high levels of rape in that country. Plus let’s not forget rape culture.
I don’t know about you. But I don’t think rape culture in countries is created just because some people in fandom ship problematic ships. Or read/support/write problematic content. We are obviously at war here against something morally disgusting. But let’s be real, you’re fighting the war the wrong way. I understand why you go after fictional content creators. You think it helps. But the other reason you go after fans who ship problematic ships is because it’s easier. But it doesn’t help, not really. Shipping two people together doesn’t necessarily mean someone supports them in a romantic way. People can ship for lots of reasons. One reason is for psychological reasons. They’re interested in the psychology of the ship. They might be interested in the psychology of the abused forming a bond with their abuser. Also know as stockholm syndrome. They might imagine themselves as the victim in the ship and not the abuser. It’s just wild to me, how people automatically assume that if someone ships a rapist ship...they think the person identifies with the rapist. How do you know they aren’t identifying with the victim? How do you know they aren’t looking at the victim who falls in love with their abuser, and think to themselves “oh my gosh that was me! I feel so validated right now!” I know what you’re thinking. Give rapists and child rapists the death penalty! Are you out of your mind? Not only will that not stop them from raping people. It will also encourage them to kill the victim, so the victim can’t testify. Some of the people who commit real serious crimes have a problem with impulse. They have a problem with thinking before they act. They have a problem with thinking about what punishment they will receive before they do something. So it doesn’t matter what the punishment is, if you have some people who don’t think about the punishment before they act. They aren’t going to think ‘oh crap better not rape this person, because I will be killed for it!’ What they will be thinking is ‘hey I wanna rape this person!’ After they rape her. They suddenly realize...crap I didn’t think about the fact that I could be killed for doing this. I’ll have to kill you, so you can’t tell on me. So really introducing the death penalty, will only put the victims at greater risk of being killed.
What we say: I don’t think people should be equating real child abuse to fictional depictions of child abuse especially fanfiction which is tagged and kept to a small audience & often written by mentally ill people, lgbtq people, and women/trans people for cathartic purposes. fiction does have some affect on reality but its not fictions fault for creating abusers and education can help people navigate engaging in fiction critically while also enjoying it.
What they hear: Im a pedo who loves 2 hurt children >:)
There is a higher chance that the writer who wrote the underage fiction is a victim of child sexual abuse than a propagator of it. Writing fanfiction empowers them against their abuse. Because they have control over every aspect of their fanfiction. Control that they didn’t have when they were an innocent child against an adult who took advantage of them. It helps them work through PTSD memories of the abuse they suffered through at their own pace. In a completely safe environment, where they have the power. Even the people who weren’t victims. Even when they write problematic fictional stories. They could be helping people. Warning tags are for those who would be triggered. But some readers, who were abused might be strengthened by reading abuse stories that other writers have written. Because
They get to control what they read.
It might be refreshing to read about a victim who developed stockholm syndrome. Because that might have been them when they were victims.
It might be refreshing to read “romanticized” version of their abuse. Because that was the reality for them. Because not all abuse is a clear cut ‘I hate my abuser.’ Often the victims feelings towards their abuser are more complicated.
Problematic ships that are authentic. That represent the complexity of how victims feel. Especially when the author has the victim develop stockholm syndrome? Are wrongly labelled as “romanticizing the ship.”
Also pedophilia is a neurological disorder. Not all pedophiles are child sex abusers. Not all child sex abusers are pedophiles. A non-pedophile can sexually abuse a child for power and control. Exactly the same way a straight man can rape another man. They did not ask to be pedophiles. And when I say neurological disorder? I mean LITERALLY CAN BE SHOWN IN AN MRI SCAN. They have control over their actions, but not over how they feel. So lets not imply that pedophiles hurt children. Or imply that it’s morally wrong to be a pedophile. It’s only wrong in “they have a disorder” kind of wrong. Not wrong as in “they are disgusting trash for the way their brain chose to wire itself against their will.”
And no. Pedophilia isn’t a sexual orientation for you nomaps out there. It’s a disorder. But they have their disorder against their will. They didn’t make themselves pedophiles.
Pedophiles don’t hurt children. Do you know who hurts children? “sex offenders of children ” Let’s use correct terminology. Pedophilia is the name of a mental disorder that the person has.The mental disorder doesn’t hurt the child. The person does.

“James was not to blame for still hexing Snape behind Lily’s back! Remus said Snape never lost a chance to hex James! You couldn’t expect James to take it lying down!”
Okay, so why keep it from Lily then?
Seriously, what was stopping James from coming up to Lily, his girlfriend and someone who has cut ties with Snape for thinking he became a major arse, and saying “hey, you know that former friend of yours that you’ve dumped bc he turned out to be a dick? he’s been hexing me on a daily basis and I see no choice but to hex him back out of self defense. I just thought you deserved to know.”
I mean, there’s no reason to believe Lily wouldn’t understand and take his side. Then why just not tell her?
Maybe ‘cause:
1) James might not have been that innocent and probably attacked Snape first behind Lily’s back sometimes (and bear in mind that james attacking snape/people was a huge dealbreaker to lily back when she rejected his advances)
OR
2) Lily wouldn’t be that understanding of his situation after all and that might have severely shaken their relationship (see parenthesis on point above)
OR
3) Lily would be understanding of the situation, but James didn’t trust her to be.
In any of these scenarios, we have a case of major miscommunication and lack of trust on what has always been a huge issue between these two (james hexing people). James and Lily ladies and gentlemen: a Healthy™ Relationship.
This is an incredibly thoughtful question.
It’s an interesting side note that Lily and James are Head Girl and Head Boy. We saw how Lily intervened in SWM - and it’s possible to see a few readings into her behaviour; perhaps she had strong moral values and would stick up for anyone in that situation, perhaps she only intervened because Snape was her friend, perhaps she intervened because she took her role as prefect seriously. Or perhaps a combination of some or all of those.
With that context, it’s reasonable to surmise that either Lily would take the responsibilities of Head Girl seriously or, in a less generous reading, that she’s happy to use her status to aid those she is aligned to.
If we believe Remus’ statement, then James’ behaviour doesn’t make sense. If Snape was hexing James, then why didn’t James use his Head Boy status instead of hexing him in response? James doesn’t need special powers as Head Boy to do this - he doesn’t need to be able to take points or issue detention. If you’re given such a position, you are deemed a responsible student, and you will have the ear of the staff - he could’ve spoken to Dumbledore or the Heads of Houses, and forced the issue until action was taken.
It would be a method of retaliation which Lily would presumably approve of, and it would also demonstrate that James had genuinely matured from being a bully into a more responsible person. Importantly for James, if nothing was done, this has the secondary consequence of ‘legitimising’ any attack he eventually makes. He can claim that he’d attempted to follow process, and he’d been putting up with Snape’s behaviour for a prolonged period - and as nobody did anything to assist, his hand was forced lest he was seriously injured.
There is no credible reason for James to be hexing Snape in this scenario. The only logical answer is that Snape wasn’t always first to draw his wand - and that perhaps explains why James didn’t feel comfortable confiding in Lily. As you suggest, this wholly undermines a huge part of their relationship.
I think it’s important to look carefully at Remus’ wording.
“Well,” said Lupin slowly, “Snape was a special case. I mean, he never lost an opportunity to curse James so you couldn’t really expect James to take that lying down, could you?”
Notice how Remus does not say, you can’t expect James not to defend himself, could you?’
Remus doesn’t mention self-defence or anything of the sort. All he says is that James wouldn’t take it lying down. James taking revenge against Snape later on can be read as James not taking that lying down.
So self-defence is not the only way Remus’ words can be read.
He also ‘boys will be boys’d it with “they were only fifteen” ! 👀👀👀
Not to Rant… but I’m gonna rant….
.
They — unprovoked, simply bc they were bored (and canonically just bc he existed) — restrained a fellow student publicly, in front of a crowd, flipped them upside down, stripped them mostly naked (‘pants’ in the UK means ‘underpants’ — it’s canon the uniform is *Robes* with nothing underneath but your underwear) and held them there to jeer at, while the crowd looked on and cheered, as they choked this student with soap…
Four-plus On One at a minimum; bc the marauders were all there for backup, Remus ‘reading’ his book Extra Hard to pretend he doesn’t know what’s going on; Lily didn’t actually do shit even though she has a wand, could have called a teacher — or at least *threatened* to — but instead contributes to his public humiliation and walks off abandoning her prefect duties — and no, there is no insult that could be hurled at her to justify this — especially considering it applies to Snape as well… he’s a ‘filthy half-blood’ bc half of his blood is ‘dirty’ bc his ‘blood-traitor’ mother married a muggle and ended the purity of the Olde and (previously) well-regarded Prince Family Line.
I could go on about Lily ‘uwu pure as the drive snow uwu sweet angel child of pure love and saintliness uwu’ Evans/Potter….. who claims to be someone’s best friend but after hearing they were Saved from unspecified danger of some sort doesn’t even bother to talk to her ‘Best. Friend.’ for literally DAYS and storms up immediately believing the version of events his bully(abuser) [who went full-blown Nice Guy™️ on her and with threats of violence against both her and her ‘best friend’ if she doesn’t bend to his will and date him] declares to be Truth and doesn’t even want to hear his side of this?
— and outside of these direct players in the scene, the entire crowd is at their backs and supporting them.
Snape faces an entire crowd of students alone, at the mercy of a pair of violent self-and-literally-entitled rich boys backed by that crowd — and this AFTER the incident at the shack where they almost killed him….
Apparently nearly murdering a fellow student wasn’t enough to instill in them a sense of shame or compassion — but what can we expect when Dumbledore swept their near-murder under the rug…. they must have felt untouchable, and justified in their ongoing abuse of Snape.
And Remus tells Harry to remember that ‘they were only fifteen’ and that Snape brought it on himself.
Well...
They — unprovoked, simply bc they were bored (and canonically just bc he existed) — restrained a fellow student publicly, in front of a crowd, flipped them upside down, stripped them mostly naked (‘pants’ in the UK means ‘underpants’ — it’s canon the uniform is *Robes* with nothing underneath but your underwear) and held them there to jeer at, while the crowd looked on and cheered, as they choked this student with soap
Yep. That was wrong of them.
Four-plus On One at a minimum; bc the marauders were all there for backup, Remus ‘reading’ his book Extra Hard to pretend he doesn’t know what’s going on; Lily didn’t actually do shit even though she has a wand, could have called a teacher — or at least *threatened* to — but instead contributes to his public humiliation and walks off abandoning her prefect duties — and no, there is no insult that could be hurled at her to justify this — especially considering it applies to Snape as well… he’s a ‘filthy half-blood’ bc half of his blood is ‘dirty’ bc his ‘blood-traitor’ mother married a muggle and ended the purity of the Olde and (previously) well-regarded Prince Family Line
Remus didn’t use his duty as prefect. So of course he was supporting their actions. You’re right that no insult is good enough for Lily to abandon her prefect duties if she was a prefect. But we don’t know that for sure. You don’t have to be a prefect to become head girl. You just need to impress the teachers and the headmaster. I also see Snape as a mudblood. I think it’s a plot hole that half-bloods aren’t seen as dirty blooded. Even though they have the muggle blood that makes muggleborns dirty blooded. I’m going to make an original post discussing that issue.
I am dirty, but you’re dirtier! Is the message implied when a half-blood calls a muggleborn mudblood
Sorry. But I don’t completely agree with you here. I’m not interested in defending Lily or James. Because I’m not a big enough fan of them to bother writing paragraphs on why I think you’re being unfair. But I have bolded the parts of your quote that I think are unfair towards Lily and James. Just know that I have good reason for believing it’s unfair. Even if I can’t be bothered to write it all down.
a) Sirius didn’t know Snape knew about the werewolf. Which is why he thought his trick would work. Why he thought Snape would actually listen to him and investigate the whomping willow.
b) Sirius knew Snape knew about the werewolf and decided to tell him how to get past the tree to idk? to uh satisfy Snape’s curiosity? To help Snape see the werewolf he’s always wanted to see?
Option a means Sirius is a dick who told a classmate to go somewhere. Without telling that classmate about a danger he knew that classmate had no idea about.
It’s just unbelievable to me that people keep throwing the ‘but Snape knew there was a werewolf down there...’ so what Martha? It’s Sirius’ thoughts that matters not what his victim did or didn’t know. And in option a Sirius thought Snape had no idea there was a werewolf down there. And he decided not to tell Snape there was a werewolf down there.
If we are purely looking at the knowledge the criminal is working with. Or what we can read directly in the text. Then Sirius is 100% guilty. The only way I could allow the ‘Snape knew there was a werewolf down there’ excuse to give Sirius some leniency but not a full free pass is if they could prove beyond all reasonable doubt that Sirius knew that Snape knew Remus was a werewolf. That Sirius knew Snape was aware of the danger and so told him in the knowledge that Snape did so at his own risk.
Option b means Sirius is a dick to Remus.
I’m more inclined to believe option a. Because when Sirius whines about Snape, he says...
‘Sneaking around, trying to find out what we were up to hoping he could get us expelled
No mention of Snape knowing Remus was a werewolf.
Then Remus says...
‘Severus was very interested in where I went every month,’ Lupin told Harry, Ron and Hermione.
No mention of Snape knowing Remus was a werewolf.
Sirius thought it would be amusing, to tell Snape all he had to do was prod the knot on the tree-trunk with a long stick, and he’d be able to get in after me.
No mention of Snape knowing Remus was a werewolf.
Not once do I see Sirius say anything along the lines of ‘Snape was trying to reveal that Remus is a werewolf. That’s why I tricked him.’
I know that the ‘prove beyond all reasonable doubt’ means it has to be something the character says directly. Not just guess work. Because they don’t have their own point of view.
Even if that guess work has good textual analysis, it’s still just guesswork.
I know that can apply to a lot of Snape headcanons.
But I’m cool with the headcanon that Sirius knew Snape knew about Remus. Just as I’m cool with the headcanon that Snape gave the prophecy cos he was afraid he’d be found out instead of the headcanon that he gave it out of loyalty to his leader.
But if we’re looking purely at what we see in the text. Without doing guess work at Sirius’ point of view. Sirius was tricking his classmate into a potentially lethal trap. A trick because as far as he knew his classmate didn’t know about the danger.
I was thinking back to PoA, where Aunt Marge says “If there’s something wrong with the bitch, there’ll be something wrong with the pup,” referencing Harry and Lily. And I realized that a lot of fans like to portray the anti-wizard sentiment as something that died out in the Middle Ages, but it still exists. If wizards dropped the masquerade, there would be a lot of Aunt Marges. I dunno. I just realized it’s a lot more complicated than people tend to think.
IA the Dursleys are proof that anti-wizard sentiment did NOT die out in the Middle Ages and if wizards came out, they’d have to face the same type of sick bigotry that other marginalised cultures face from people like Aunt Marge. Idk anyone that’s argued otherwise?? What I’ve seen argued (and IA tbh) is that there’s no evidence of wizards being particularly vulnerable to Muggle attacks. There’s no citation of thousands of wizards being burned @ the stake and it actually affecting them — the one canon mention of this outlines how they’d use the “Flame Freeze Charm” and pretend to be burning while really enjoying the sensation, and one witch enjoyed it so much she went back to be burned several times over (1st Chapter, PoA).
There’s a ton of fanon about how guns or bombs or whatever would affect wizards, but we factually know wizards have their own instant-kill methods and instant-get-out-of-range methods, not to mention a record of surviving bodily injuries that would otherwise kill or severely maim Muggles. Muggles have the advantage of numbers, but given the other stuff there’s not enough to say definitively that a wizard’s fear of Muggles would be justified.
Moreover we don’t get a sense that the wizarding world’s problem w Muggles is fear, it’s that (many of them) know damn well they could flatten hundreds of Muggles without even trying, and they’re frustrated that they don’t get to. (I’m remembering how Muggle-hunting was @ one point a legit activity that the Black family petitioned the Ministry to uphold.) Both Voldemort and Grindelwald’s selling points were the intention to bring the wizarding world out of hiding.
We get plenty of examples (Harry, Ariana, Credence Barebones, arguably Tom Riddle Jr) in canon where on an individual level, Muggle bigotry and ignorance actually can severely harm a wizard. So yeah, IA the issue is complicated. I’d still hope tho that on a rational level, everyone knows that the possibility of facing bigotry does not actually make it okay to wipe out the oppressing culture as a whole, bc that’s what Voldemort and Grindelwald were selling.
If you read Beedle the Bard. Dumbledore says that wizarding children revealed themselves to muggles because of their accidental magic. But because they had no control over their magic, they were hunted down and killed.
So there is your evidence. Furthermore I don’t think what Rowling said about wizarding children (prepubescent) is an unrealistic retcon. It makes sense that children would be more vulnerable. Headless Nick had his wand taken from him, so they could execute him, and so he couldn’t escape using his magic. So they can kill adult wizards and witches, if they know about their magic, and know to take their wand away. I’m not at all surprised that the school book Harry read didn’t mention anything of the sort. Probably because they didn’t want to scare these children by writing in their school textbooks ‘hey look at what happened to other children your age back in the day. They were tortured to death by the very muggles we want you to accept!” Sorry but wizards and witches are going to be affected by an bomb they didn’t see coming. A timer bomb for example. Because they’d probably be exploded into pieces before their accidental magic can kick in or before they can wave a wand. They are outnumbered by around six thousand to one, I think. Being fearful of muggles as a whole is justified. In fact that fear plus a lack of education in basic biology (recessive and dominant genes. How muggleborns can gain magic) is kind of why Voldemort was able to sell his whole “muggleborns stole magic” propaganda. Sirius said a lot of people thought Voldemort had the right idea. Not just some. Not just a little. Not just a small group. A lot. They only got cold feet when they realized just how far Voldemort was willing to go to get power.
So you have 400 death eaters and much more than that who silently supported Voldemort but didn’t want to be part of the death eaters. Understandable they didn’t want to join, even if they did support him, as Voldemort wouldn’t hesitate to torture one of his followers to gain power.
You’re right that some people are prejudiced out of muggle hatred and because they find it fun to hurt those weaker than them. But it could also be argued that some are prejudiced out of fear and ignorance. It’s that fear and ignorance (I say ignorance because they don’t seem to know what DNA is and how muggleborns can get magic w/out stealing it) The thing I don’t like about the world building of Harry Potter is the death eaters are a very simplistic movement. The Nazi’s for example are such a detailed political movement, that even good people joined the group. Once they realized how bad the group was, some of them saved as many Jews as they could. This is because real life groups usually have a lot of hooks to lure people into their group. Not just a “hey this other group sucks” lure. But lures like ‘hey we can help feed the poor” “we can help create more jobs” etc.
People like: Wilhelm Hosenfield
Karl Plagge
Albert Battel
Oskar Schindler
Even Hitler made special exceptions for Jewish people he was fond of. It’s funny when people compare Voldemort to Hitler, because name one muggle or muggleborn Voldemort was fond of and made an exception for?
Quite frankly the death eaters is simple world building on Rowling’s part. Lacking the complexity that real life hate groups have.
every time i think about people who actually believe snape was trying to sacrifice james and harry so he could “have” lily it baffles me like…. not even going into snape’s character, which has repeatedly shown that he doesn’t kill people no matter how much he dislikes or hates them, logistically this doesn’t make any sense. james and harry can’t be used as bargaining tools to save lily. voldemort is always going to kill james and harry no matter what snape says to him. it’s not like voldemort was going in there to kill lily alone and snape popped and was like “hey dont do that, save lily and kill james and harry instead!” james and harry were ALREADY on the hit list??? voldemort is literally going there to kill harry??? these people act like voldemort’s intention is to kill lily alone and that snape just like…. throws james and harry in his path for his own malicious benefit or w/e
it’s not even that it’s not in-character for snape and he never fucking says jack shit about sacrificing james and harry for lily (that’s dumbledore yo)…. it’s that it doesn’t even make! any goddamn sense! it’s the most nonsensical misreading of a situation i’ve ever seen and i’ve seen a lot of them
I’m not disagreeing with you. But you’re argument is based on what we see. The Snaters are arguing on a ‘what if’ basis.
What they mean is if Snape could 100% guarantee Lily’s life by sacrificing James and Harry. Snape would have done so. They just don’t write what they actually mean clearly.
So they’re looking at Snape as gross from a what if argument. What if Snape could guarantee Lily’s survival by sacrificing James and Harry? Would he sacrifice James and Harry, or go to Dumbledore? They believe in that what if scenario he would sacrifice James and Harry instead of going to Dumbledore. Because the sacrifice 100% guarantees that Lily lives. Dumbledore guarantees that Lily has a good chance of living but it’s not a 100% guarantee.
That’s what disgusts them.
But funnily enough they don’t seem to apply their ‘what if’ arguments to other characters. ‘What if’ Sirius became a teacher and Snape’s son was in his class would Sirius not bully Snape’s son because he looks like Snape?
Draco fans: *sobs* It is lyke so unfair dat dis nazi abuser known as Snape got a redemption arc when misunderstood Draco who didn’t know better should’ve gotten one instead.
Snape fans: *Reflecting on the cost of Snape’s redemption arc. Remembering that time Snape gave his life to bring down Voldemort. Remembering the way he died screaming because a huge snake tore out his neck multiple times with her teeth.* Draco fans must really love Draco. Nothing says character love like wanting your fave to get a redemption arc that involves dying a painful death. :O
Do you think enjoying underage fictional rape ships is acceptable. Why?
I think this ask has something to do with my post about how who someone ships doesn’t say anything about them morally? I mean fiction doesn’t have to follow real life laws.In real life, nobody can use a magic stick to knock someone backwards telekinetically. In real life nobody can teleport from A to B.But in fiction they can.In real life rape is wrong. In real life children can’t consent. There is so much philosophical, moral, psychological, and neurological reasons to support that viewpoint. I support that viewpoint. I don’t condone that kind of thing. But in fiction you can make things that would be wrong in real life right in fiction. The same way you can make magic that doesn’t exist in real life, exist in fiction. It’s the moment someone defends the fictional rape etc that they enjoy, then it becomes problematic. If they just accept it as a trash fantasy they like, that they wouldn’t approve of in real life, then that’s fine.Technically fictional characters that you fantasize about can give consent. To illuminate my point. Imagine someone who has a fantasy about the child Lolita giving “consent” to Humbert.Lolita isn’t a separate person from the one having the fantasy. Lolita is part of the mind of the one having the fantasy. So it’s actually the person having the fantasy who has given the consent, and they just so happen to give consent through the fictional Lolita they imagine in their mind. It’s not like Lolita is a real child, manipulated into giving fake consent, because she would be incapable of giving actual consent. Lolita is part of someone’s fantasy, and so Lolita’s consent is actually the consent of the person having the fantasy. Even if someone has a fantasy where someone is raped in an aggressive way, where the rape victim doesn’t enjoy it. The person with the fantasy is the one who kind of gave consent to experience and enjoy that fantasy. Because the people they fantasize about aren’t separate individuals. They’re part of their own mind. Their own mind and therefore their own choice. So technically it’s not rape, even in a fantasy sense, it’s technically not rape. I think the reason people believe it has some moral basis, is because of anecdotal evidence fallacy, like oh one person raped someone after reading rape fiction, therefore rape fiction means that someone is a potential rapist or whatever.
I think there is a big difference between Snape not caring for James and Harry, and Snape actively wanting James and Harry dead, so he can have Lily for himself.
If Snape was that desperate to have Lily for himself, and to get James and Harry outta the way, I can see him attempting to kidnap Lily (not saying he would succeed) and getting her out of the line of fire; then leaving James and Harry to fend for themselves.
If he is that actively against James and Harry surviving, he’d actively think of, and work on a plan that only involves keeping Lily safe and which excludes James and Harry. I’m sure Snape would have been able to think of something. Snape’s thought was Dumbledore who would protect all three of them. I’m tired of the fanon idea that Snape was actively against James and Harry surviving, so he could have Lily for himself. If he was that desperate to have Lily for himself, Dumbledore wouldn’t be an option. He get out a piece of paper, and brainstorm other ideas to protect Lily.
Being indifferent towards James and Harry isn’t the same as wanting to throw them under the bus, so he can have Lily to himself. It was Albus, you disgust me, Dumbledore that was willing to throw his soldiers and their child under the bus to get Snape to work for him.
Alose he didn’t want ther for himself, he wanted her to be alive. Lily had more than just two options in her life, James or Snape.
I agree, but I think he DID actually kinda want the Potters to die (excluding Lily ofc). Bear in mind, he knew ALL of James’s bad sides. He knew about the abuse, the harassment, the bullying, the (executed or threatened) sexual assault (yes, the tree thing about forcefully stripping a helpless boy in front of a cheering crowd would be sexual assault), the remorseless, entitled attitude, etc. He knew about the excuses, the lying, the endlessly-getting-away-with-anything, and could probably guess that James was lying to Lily too. And maybe he thought, or perhaps felt that he knew, that eventually she’d be no exception for him. In anything. The lying, the abuse, the getting-away-with-it.
If Snape wanted James dead, I don’t think it would be because of jealousy. He respected Lily’s choice and didn’t press the matter when she refused to forgive him. I think he still had hope, but I don’t think he’d EVER force her. (Though we do have canonical evidence of James trying to.)
It might have been revenge for everything James and the Marauders had done to him. It might have been fear, ptsd, paranoia, the trauma that haunted him, the bitterness he grew into, the path he’d ended up on and perhaps blamed the Marauders for.
Partially.
But I think the one thing that would have made Snape truly want James (and potentially Harry, who he viewed as HIS offspring, what Snape perhaps saw as the manifestation of Lily’s ties to him) dead, would be the thought that he knew what James was like. He’d seen him at his worst, perhaps more than anyone in the world, and he knew better than anyone how bad he could get. How remorselessly cruel he could be. How he acted this way and that and was forgiven of all. Snape knew what James was capable of doing, and what he could do to her.
I think if Snape truly wanted James dead, it would be because of that. The thought that she could be next.
(And I’m not saying he would have been right, but there’s evidence to suggest that James might have become a cheater, perhaps an abusive spouse, and there’s canonical evidence that he lied to Lily about his continued violent encounters with Snape during their relationship. Even so, we’ll never truly know. Because there’s no evidence for James actually changing except for the word of his friends who helped him bully people in the first place, and who might at best be biased. He might have. I’d love to believe that. But I doubt Snape would have.)
My dude, you’re response to me is basically “I agree but I don’t agree.” My post is me saying Snape didn’t want James and Harry dead. He was just indifferent towards whether they lived or died. Passive indifference is not the same as active desire. Then you turn around and say but I think he did want James and Harry to die. Like do you agree with me or not? Because what you just said is so contradictory. Like he didn’t go up to Voldemort and ask him to kill James and Harry. He gave the prophecy having no idea who it referred to.
As for the rest of what you wrote. Interesting meta. I enjoyed reading it, but I don’t fully agree with it. But I’m too lazy to go into full detail about where I agree and disagree. So I will give a brief summary. James has plenty of really bad things he did, that he can be demonized for. So even though I care nothing for this character, I find it unfair to take away the very few good things he did. Like being a decent father and husband. Especially when we literally don’t see James abusing Lily as her husband. Like that’s just how I feel. That if a character has very few good things going for them, it’s unfair to strip that from the character. I mean with the way Snape’s goodness is stripped from him by Snape haters, James should get the same treatment in retaliation, but I want to be better than that. Because it just creates this vicious cycle of revenge. I think if Snape wanted James’ dead, your meta about it being from a place of trauma etc is valid. But (if) being the key word.
The Marauders were dicks, but a large reason that they targeted Snape was because he hung out with baby Death Eaters. It's not a simple as "They were high school bullies". A war was brewing and there were students practicing dark magic.
mmkay my man except they literally targeted him from day one. are you really expecting me to believe that james potter believed that snape was doing dark magic…. at ELEVEN???? bc they start their bullying from DAY ONE, so i don’t buy the “well snape was practicing dark magic and that’s why the marauders targeted him” shtick. they didn’t target him bc he had dark magic, they targeted him bc he’s an easy target & they’re bored.
more proof for that claim - when james attacks snape in swm, a really easy defense to justify himself to lily would be “well he was practicing dark arts!” it would have been so easy to jump there and it would have made him look a lot better/cooler in her eyes. but he doesn’t jump there - instead, he uses the “it’s just that he exists” line. if james really DID suspect snape of practicing dark arts, why wouldn’t he bring that up to justify himself to lily, who he’s trying to impress? or is it just that maybe…. he just wanted to bully snape bc snape was there……??????
re: hanging out with baby death eaters - was he? he was housemates with students who we know became death eaters, but aside from lily’s offhand comment about him “hanging around” with those two slytherin students (which can be interpreted a number of ways - are they friends or are they just housemates in the way that harry and dean are housemates…? we don’t see them together so it’s tough to say) there’s zero evidence that snape had one (1) friend in slytherin, let alone that he was chilling with a group of “baby death eaters” that would justify him getting attacked by the marauders. also, would just like to add that there’s also zero evidence that ANY students were practicing dark arts at hogwarts. attacking each other? sure. but we don’t know about them using dark arts.
see the thing is, when people try to paint this situation as some sort of moral crusade, they’re justifying what the marauders did to snape. “well snape was a DARK WIZARD” they say, and that turns the marauders from bullies into heroes. i’m here to tell you friend - it WAS just as simple as they were high school bullies. if it were some sort of moral crusade, if there was any evidence at all for the claims you’re laying down, i’d be willing to listen…. but there isn’t. so all you’re really proving to me is that you’re cool with snape’s bullying.
What you mean is “you’re cool with Snape being bullied.” Not cool with Snape’s bullying.
I mean, he never lost an opportunity to curse James so you couldn't really expect James to take that lying down, could you?”
I really wish I could draw, because this scene here is just amazing.
Narcissa let out a noise that might have been a dry sob and covered her face with her hands. Snape set his glass down upon the table and sat back again, his hands upon the arms of his chair, smiling into Bellatrix's glowering face.
I just want to see Snape looking at an angry Bellatrix, and just smiling at her. Snape’s loving it. He’s drinking up Bellatrix’s anger like fine wine. He finds Bellatrix’s anger so funny, and that’s so different from what we get in the movies. In the movies Snape looks so neutral.
But in the actual books Snape is answering Bella’s accusations with a smile on his face.
When someone thinks that Snape is the evilest character ever, it leaves me wondering if they only read and watch G to PG rated stuff. Because if you watch a show like, I don’t know, Game of Thrones, Snape doesn’t even register on that scale of evil.
hey!!!! guess what!!!! i fucking love severus snape so much!!!! unironically and without any fuckin apologies!!!! he’s one of my favorite characters and i’d die for him!!!!!
“Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business.
Remus’ voice on the map mocks Snape’s appearance, so I really doubt Remus was always the bystander where Snape was concerned.
For Remus to insult Snape like that, it’s more than likely, Remus used to be involved with the bullying.
To further that narrative, Remus gets Neville to place boggart Snape in a dress, when he could have had Neville dispel boggart Snape in a less humiliating but still effective way.
Then Remus basically tells Snape he’s pathetic for still being angry about the time Sirius tried to kill him.
I fully believe Snape was telling the truth, when he said the marauders attacked him four on one at first.
