Expanded Prompt for Cassie and Mel
Original prompt- Cassie is the mother of Mel and Becca, having had them when she was 16. While she tried to raise them at first, Becca's support needs forced Cassie to give up the twins for adoption. They reunite when Mel starts at the Pitt and Cassie helps with Becca, and Mel and Becca become good big sisters to Harrison
expanded- Cassie McKay and Mel King discover on Mel’s first day at PTMC that they are mother and daughter: Cassie gave birth to fraternal twins Mel and Becca at sixteen, gave them up for adoption when Becca’s high-support autism needs became too much for Cassie to manage even with her parents help, and the twins were raised by the loving King family until both adoptive parents died. Mel became Becca’s primary support while becoming a doctor, and Becca is still living with Mel while attending a day program at Middle Hill, with Mel still trying to Get Becca into the assisted living program.
Mel and Becca always knew they were adopted, but only Mel remembers Cassie. When their mother died, Mel discovered Cassie's name among her documents, and so when Mel is introduced to Cassie after starting at PTMC she realizes Cassie is her mom. Cassie realizes who Mel is once overhearing Mel talk about Becca with Langdon. They confront each other, but Mel is not one to hold grudges and doesn't judge people, including Cassie's ankle monitor. Still, Mel cautions about reuniting Cassie with Becca, saying Becca doesn't like sudden change and both of them took their mothers death hard. Cassie understands. Cassie and Mel hide the truth at first and slowly begin sharing their histories while still working the same patients and crises around them. Both make fun of the fact that they are mother and daughter and yet both R2s.
Optional- when Mel makes her daily video call with Becca, Cassie could accidently overhear it, and realize how much Mel is doing for Becca. Optional- Cassie could have told Harrison earlier in his life about Mel and Becca, or you can have her tell him later. When Harrison comes in with Chad, Mel realizes this is her little brother, and when Cassie's father Neil comes to pick Harrison up, Mel meets her grandfather unbeknownst to him. Harrison could met Mel without learning she is his sister, but thinks their is something familiar about her.
After the shift, Cassie catches up to Mel before they both go home and ask if she can tell her parents and Harrison and meet Becca. Mel says yes to the first part, but says she has to talk about the second part with Becca, and if Becca says no that's that. Mel and Becca talk at the restaurant they eat dinner at before going home to watch Elf. Becca handles the knowledge about Cassie better than Mel suspected, but is hesitant to meet her. Becca eventually comes around to agreeing to dinner with Cassie, Harrison, and her parents at Mel and Becca's apartment, but reserves the option to kick them out or leave at any time. Optional- but after the dinner Becca can make them watch Elf.
Optional how you want to handle Chad and Chloe, but you could have something Happen to them that gives Cassie full custody, like them both being on drugs. If that happens, Cassie will want Harrison checked out medically for incidental exposure, and Mel being the only one available does the examination.
Harrison bonds with both sisters, and Mel eventually breaks down to Cassie and her parents under the weight of caregiving, debt, and trying to finish her residency. Cassie and her parents start to help with Becca, including helping pay to get Becca into Middle Hill and allow Mel some time to herself. This allows Mel and Becca to return to being sisters instead of Caregiver. Optional- but as Becca gets closer with Cassie, she could talk to Cassie about Adam before they become boyfriend and girlfriend. Cassie in turn could tell Becca that dating is absolutely her choice, but not telling Mel will her her sister.
Other plotlines I'd want to see included Mel and Becca babysitting Harrison for a weekend. Mel can help Harrison with homework while Becca and Harrison bond at the zoo. They could do a movie Marathon, with Becca picking Elf and Harrison wanting to do a horror movie but settling for Planet of the apes.
Mel and Cassie eventually decided to confess their relationship at work, and Robby says it won't be a problem with HR since Cassie didn't raise Mel and they are both the same rank so neither supervises the other. Optional- ships can be whatever you want but if you choose Kingdon as one, have Cassie caution Mel about dating someone in the first year of sobriety that just got divorced.
