I’m laughing so hard right now because there are literally SO MANY Kingdon fics where Mel and Frank sleep together and it wasn’t super planned so Mel doesn’t have pajamas and has to wear one of Frank’s shirts but literally nobody has written anything about Frank wearing Mel’s clothes for either the same reason or just to make her giggle after a rough day
I am in no way even close to done with the long-ass Kingdon fic I'm writing but here are some tidbits (headcanons that inform this fic universe)
(cut for spoilers--- fanfic spoilers, not show canon spoilers, but spoilers nevertheless)
Frank is the first to say "I love you." He says it to Mel after she offers to take over a case involving two hysterical children (the children have done something very stupid involving a shiv made out of a candy cane, and Frank is horrified that his own children might one day do that) so he can work on something more calm like a constipated old man.
Frank has a habit of enjoying his food (Ferrero Rocher, apples with peanut butter, chicken wings) rather sensually. Mel cannot stop thinking about it.
Frank is Mel's first in most things (first kiss, first real date, first sexual experience) but he's not the first person to give her "the tingles." That happened when she was watching Glee in her youth and she discovered Kevin McHale's voice.
Mel's Christmas sucked because when she got amped up about her passions and interests and infodumped about them at the dinner at Adam's house, his parents (who adore Becca but assumed she'd be bringing along someone neurotypical) realized she was more like Becca than they expected and they seemed visibly disappointed. Frank's Christmas sucked because he had gotten a set of magnets for Penny's birthday that were blank faces that kids can add features to (to make portraits of themselves and their loved ones) and when he went to Abby's house (they've been divorced a few months at this point), Penny had made a family portrait on the fridge: herself, Tanner, Abby…and the neighbor, the cop who Abby had hired to bring Frank to rehab the year prior to make sure he wouldn't flake out.
Mel feels bad that she didn't have a Christmas gift prepared for Frank so she buys him a Star Wars waffle iron at CVS.
Frank has a bad habit of going to the bathroom with the door open.
Frank was not at the bar the night Trinity and Mel did karaoke. However, the bar does stream its karaoke nights on IG live and Frank saw it on his explore page. He found himself intensely attracted to the headbanging blonde in the green shirt (but didn't recognize her as he had entered the stream after she took her braid down and also the video quality was ass) but didn't interact with the video because (1) things were bad with Abby and he didn't want to give her any ammo, and (2) he was dealing with residual feelings for Abby and intense, growing feelings for Mel, and he didn't want to take on a third potential love interest. He did, however, use the confused boner he got from the video to have okay sex with Abby…and she still filed for divorce like three weeks later.
Mel does not know what a "spank bank" is.
Frank is an incredibly horny texter, and when he is especially saucy, Mel just responds with "FRANCIS."
Frank has a go-to diner and his favorite waitress is a woman who's been working there since she was in high school (she's around 50 now). She has a raspy voice from yelling at people. He asks Mel to be his girlfriend at this diner.
Mel is a stickler for safe sex and is eager to go on oral contraceptives because she's deeply concerned about the environmental impact of the condoms she and Frank are using. She is worried about sea turtles and Frank has to point out that Pittsburgh isn't coastal so their condoms are more likely going to some landfill in Ohio, which further upsets her because she thinks about raccoons eating them.
Mel got turned on when Frank touched her head after she got knocked over by Boba Criminal and went home that night (after the karaoke) and googled "boners in scrubs." She tells Frank about this for some reason.
Frank had wanted Mel to wake him up the day after their first date (she slept over) but he got up before her and took out his guitar and started improvising a song about her. He begs her to come up with her own lyrics and they're just as cheesy.
Frank owns a tee-shirt that says "BACK AND BODY HURTS" in the Bath and Body Works logo.
Mel and Frank's second date is at a restaurant called Revel. It is close to the hospital (at least close to the address that appears in canon--- it is not close to the hospital The Pitt is apparently based on) which proves an issue when the most gossipy nurse is also on a date there with the radiologist she's been hardcore thirsting after. She sends Mel and Frank an order of wings.
Mel can be a bit of a pedant about grammar and Frank thinks it's SO hot.
Frank is the second of five children. He has a sister Caroline who's about 34 and lives just outside of Cleveland, two sisters in their late twenties (fraternal twins-- Alexandra is a lesbian, Suzanna is not), and a MUCH younger sister Elyse who is a senior at Carnegie Mellon. Frank and Elyse are both very loved, but both were unplanned (he and Caroline are only about a year apart). Frank was told he was named after his great-grandfather but he was actually named after hot dogs. His parents conceived Caroline on their wedding night and never got to go on a honeymoon, so when she was about three months old his parents traveled to NYC for a week, left Caroline in the care of an aunt who lived there when they wanted to do a child-free activity, and conceived Frank in the bathrooms at Coney Island during the hot dog eating contest. They weren't busted by the cops because there was a riot outside that was the cops' first priority.
Emma has a tattoo of Stitch on her thigh because she lost a bet with Javadi.
someone on TikTok described Kingdon as Grant and Alyssa, the Unlikely Couple from SNL (the one with Marcello Hernandez and Jane Wickline on Weekend Update), and while it's not super accurate because Frank is way dorkier than Grant, I kind of need someone to draw Kingdon as the Unlikely Couple

This takes place starting Christmas Day 2026
Mel King arrives in the ER one minute late, which is eleven minutes later than she would have liked.
At least I clocked in on time, she thinks.
Her neck itches. She wonders if it's her new body wash or maybe the tags of her scrubs are bothering her in a way she thought she had learned to tune out. Clothing tags had made her fidgety and nervous as a child and had sent Becca into a tailspin.
Becca, she thinks. That's it. Never mind.
She'd spent Christmas Eve with Becca at Adam's parents' house. Adam's parents were kind, loving people, but they talked a lot and assumed a lot, and when Becca had trotted out the gift she'd gotten Mel, a conical medieval princess hat from the local Paper Source, and Mel had let her guard down to gush about the renaissance faire, she could see their faces fall. She knows Adam's parents love Becca and she knows Adam's parents trust her to have Becca's best interests at heart but watching their hearts sink as they realized it wasn't just the good part of a year in a womb with their son's girlfriend that Mel shared but a number of her quirks as well did a number on her.
Their house was homey, but in a Precious Moments figurines, hard candy, rosary candles kind of way. It felt stuck in a decade Mel had never lived in and her parents (had they lived) would have remembered through different eyes. Christmas with the Adams family (yes, Becca's boyfriend is Adam Adams) was fine, but it wasn't the explosion of joy that had been Princess's birthday a few months prior. Mel's not the touchy-feely type or much of a noise enjoyer, but the ample space and large crowd had allowed her to slip away into the cool fall breeze and enjoy two things she had learned to love since her transfer to The Pitt: lumpia and accidentally getting mildly flashed by Dr. Langdon when he reached into a tree to retrieve a Frisbee that one of Princess's half-dozen tween nephews had haphazardly launched. It wasn't movie night at Santos's apartment, which somehow felt good even if the laughter was mostly at Mel's expense when she nearly got swallowed up by one of the three enormous Lovesac beanbag chairs Trinity had in lieu of actual sofas. It wasn't tea and pastry at Dr. Al-Hashimi's. It didn't feel free, and something was missing. Someone, really.
"Merry Christmas," Mel says, nodding to Santos.
"Merry Christmas to you, Merry Melodies," Santos snarks. "How did you spend Christmas Eve? At a revolutionary war reenactment, signing the declaration of codependence with Dr. Benzo-min Franklin?"
Mel blinks slowly.
Dr. Langdon's first name is Franklin?
"I spent it with my sister and her boyfriend's family. It was…it was fine. Nothing to write home about, not that I could anyway."
"Why are you twitching like last week's flea lady?"
Mel shudders at the memory.
"It's nothing, uh, I just…Becca gave me some tinsel to put in my hair and I took it out to shower and then I put it back in afterwards in case I run into her. She'll feel put out if I don't display her gift, and I figured this was a little more work friendly than the conical princess hat she got me. It's itchy. What work do we have cut out for us today?"
"Fuck if I know, I only got here two minutes before you."
Mel and Santos turn to look at the board together.
"Jesus, the night shift left us with a lot," Mel groans.
"12 lacerations, 11 children choking, 10 wounds from cooking, 9 drunk guys puking, 8 diabetics, 7 preterm labors, 6 kids-a-faking, 5 STIs, 4 minor strokes, 3 frostbites, 2 D-O-As, and a pear tree up somebody's ass," Santos sings.
"Funny," Mel grunts.
"Hey, there is nothing funny about rectal lacerations," Santos says.
"Who's got what up their ass?" Whitaker asks, appearing out of nowhere, half a brownie in his mouth.
Santos nods at three different trauma rooms.
"Three DIFFERENT patients with foreign bodies…up there?"
"No, just one."
"Then why did you nod at three different trauma rooms like there are people with things up their ass in there?"
"Two of them are figurative," Santos says. "Robby's salty he's been back a month and things were running smoother than your hairless ass without him."
When you are writing Pitt fic, where do you place the hospital?
I mean, besides Pittsburgh, that's obvious.
The Pitt Wiki has a canon address for the PTMC based on a printout that appeared in some paperwork in an episode, so that's one option.
However, I have heard that the PTMC is based on the Allegheny General, which is in a different part of Pittsburgh (not too far away, but further from the action).

I was alive for the entirety of ER’s run. The pilot episode aired in 1994, and I was in the third grade. Obviously I didn’t watch it when I was in third grade, but when I was in high school, I watched it.
I am a nosy piece of shit. I love spoilers. I will never spoil a thing for someone else but I will always seek out spoilers, especially if a show is letting me down. Knowing what’s happening, knowing that my faves are endgame, knowing that the pairing specifically kept together to get the writers out of developing either character (not so much an issue in The Pitt but a problem in other shows) doesn’t last, knowing whether something is worth continuing or should be given up on… that’s important to me.
When I was in high school, there was this website called KimAndKerry. It was primarily devoted to the relationship between Dr. Weaver (Kerry) and her then-partner Kim. While I didn’t mind them as a couple, I was REALLY there for the forums. You see, there was someone in the forums who worked on set or knew someone who did… and when I say they had SPOILERS, I mean it. Like, chunks of the script. Near-full synopses weeks before shit aired. I was ADDICTED.
This is the one where (as laid out in my long-ass headcanon post), Mel knocks out a lot of firsts in one night. What she hasn't had up until this point is a real date (they did go to a diner after realizing that they hadn't eaten anything in a while, but they both agreed that didn't count). At this point in the story, it is December 26th and they have the day off after working Christmas Day. Frank wants to know if Mel wants the date to happen that day or some time in the future. Here is an excerpt.
(cut for horrors involving an arachnid)
"Just out of curiosity, and this is totally not me being a pervert," Frank says. "But what first did we not accomplish last night?"
"I kind of…well, I guess the diner kind of counted as a date…"
"You want to go on a real date."
"Yeah."
"And I guess you haven't gotten your first dick pic," Frank jokes.
"I haven't gotten my first wanted dick pic. I have unfortunately gotten quite a few unsolicited ones from patients, patients' brothers, patient's dads…"
Frank gags.
"Christ."
"None from him yet," Mel says.
"How did they get your number?"
"They didn't. It was AirDrop before I figured out how to only accept AirDrops from friends."
"Well, if you ever want one from me, all you have to do is ask."
"What exactly is the etiquette around…all that?"
Frank laughs.
"I don't mind if you save them, but do place them in a hidden folder so that you're the only one who sees them. They get deleted if we break up. I accept constructive criticism on the framing of the shots, but my health is my priority. If you are ever the recipient of a dick pic and you notice a mole that wasn't there before, I want you to tell me about it before any other feedback."
"Noted."
"I am open to receiving photos of whatever of yourself you wish to share. However, until my children reach the age where they are not grabbing at my phone, please limit such photos to AirDrop and not text."
"No texting pictures of my boobs. Got it."
"And no AirDrop boob shots while we are at work. I am still on thin ice with Robby. He will not see my phone, but he will see me flustered and he will assume the worst."
"So when can I even send them?"
"On our way to the parking garage? I can drive with a boner, I just can't treat patients with one."
"Frank, I take the bus."
"In the event that you…move in."
"Ah. OK."
There is a long pause.
"So this…date. Do you want to do that…tonight? I can drop you off at your place after…maybe see if your bed could handle what mine did."
Mel laughs.
"I'd have to turn my Squishmallows around. They've never seen a hard-on before."
Frank laughs.
"Speaking of hard-ons," he says, "I had to deal with a guy the other day who was nearsighted and mistook super-glue for personal lubricant."
"I had a guy come in because there was a brown recluse spider in his Fleshlight."
"Dead or alive?"
"Dead."
"Oh, that's good," Frank says. "Well, not good in the sense that there was a spider in his Fleshlight but…"
"The dick was…also dead."
"The guy's or the spider's?"
"Do spiders HAVE dicks?" Mel asks.
"You're going to have to be the one to google that," Frank says. "Again, kids grab my phone. Did the guy lose the dick or does it just not work?"
"That I do not know. I passed that one off to Dr. Al-Hashimi because she apparently knows more about spiders and I went out to deal with a fecal impaction."
"Let me guess, it hit Whitaker when it came out?"
Mel laughs.
"I will never call anyone a nickname based on their misfortune, but…I will admit Santos calling him Shitaker did make me chuckle."
I'm not an RPF shipper, but as a Kingdon shipper, the Patrick/Taylor stage door pictures that just leaked are the 2026 equivalent of those 2010 pictures of Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz in Monaco in terms of how much they are making my heart explode
Tanner was named after Abby's best friend who died when she was little. Frank was a little weirded out by Abby's insistence on naming their son after the boy who Abby talks about like he was "the one that got away" despite Abby swearing her love for him was NEVER romantic. It's only when they're on their way to an appointment and they see a dog and Abby freaks out that "it's a sign!!" that Frank realizes that Tanner was a chocolate lab.
Penny was named after the Pittsburgh Penguins. She was born shortly after they won a game (the first game Frank and Abby took Tanner to), and all he could talk about was "Pengy!" (he was two) so they named her the closest thing to Pengy so he would be excited about having a sister.
Frank was "that a-hole with a guitar" in college, so he assumed that Abby would love to be serenaded when she was pregnant with Tanner. He changed the words of "Carrying The Banner" from Newsies to "Carrying The Tanner" and it gave her the ick so bad that she didn't want to watch the Newsies pro-shot ever again.
When Frank and Mel eventually reproduce (and boy, do they reproduce), Mel does NOT get the ick from Frank's serenades. She does, however, wish their girls would not tap dance on her bladder while he sings.
Was it ever explicitly said in canon when Mel's mom passed? The wiki said it was during Mel's early college years but then goes on to say it happened when she was 23, and if Mel had put off college so long that her early college years WERE when she was 23, she wouldn't be as far in her residency as she is right now.
