Femslash February day 1: Emma and Alyssa from The Prom
Alyssa: *looking at Emma affectionately*
Emma: Are you okay? Your face is weird
Kevin Shields but he’s Kevin from ghostbusters (2015)
can anyone please introduce me to the whole Tootsie the musical drama? a girl i know really likes it and i saw a lot of hate on it and i want to hear the whole story from someone who knows what's going on, thanks!
I’ve seen it and in summary it’s sexist, transphobic, and a little homophobic and makes a joke out of people with anxiety.
The show starts about a Michael Dorsey who can’t land a job due to the fact hes such a hard actor to work with. He goes home and laments to his roommate Jeff about how he just can’t get a job. Cue some conversation that leads to talk about Michael’s ex, Sandy. Sandy has anxiety, especially about acting and auditioning, but she’s worked up the courage to go to one. She enters and sings a song about the fear she feels when going to auditions. Then Michael offers to run lines with her.
In the middle of it he stops her and tries to demonstrate how she should be speaking. Which prompts the line; “See? You’re even a better girl than me.” Which prompts an idea.
(This is where the order of events gets blurry for me so this may not be entirely in order)
Michael shows up to the audition dressed as Dorothy Michaels, and gets the part Sandy was after. My thing here is that he’s essentially stealing a job from a woman he knows because he believes he can be a better woman actor than a woman. What makes this worse, in my opinion, is the fact that his Roommate Jeff acknowledges this but nothing happens to him because of it.
Michael also agrees to have a date with Sandy, who then sings a song about how she’s afraid michael will stand her up because he always stands her up. Then the show makes a joke of it by having Jeff and Michael dress Sandy up in her jacket and such, and push her out the door which you can then hear her singing from the window, which they shut. This irked me as someone with Anxiety who’s insecurities are usually shut down for being ‘stupid’. (It also doesn’t help that Michael actually does stand her up.)
Michael happens to start crushing on his co-star Sandy but surprise surprise she thinks hes a woman. They do though quickly become good friends and one night they’re hanging out at Julie’s house and she begins talking about her dream man. This doesn’t seem like a big deal at first until later in the show where it talks of Dorothys rise to fame and at the end, with Julie convinced that Michaels a girl, he kisses her without her permission. Which is. Overall a really gross scene.
Then begins act II, where Jeff tells Michael he is infact, being an asshole. Michael, infact, once again, gets no repercussions for this. Instead he goes to a party Julie is going to be at and tries to get Julie to go with him using the things she told him in confidence as Michael. Julie also begins questioning her sexuality. Dorothy begins to take over the show and essentially kick out the director.
Julie tries to date him as Dorothy but Michael is Not a fan of being in a fake lesbian relationship. Cue opening night of the play, where he tells everybody ON STAGE that he’s a man. Julie rightfully leaves. Also he says something along the lines of “It’s no job from a man to be a woman” which you understand the sentiment but it comes off as super transphobic when you think about it.
Then at the end Julie and Michael are sitting on a bench, and, this is probably the moment i hate most in the show, is Julie calls him brave and forgives him because he “saw an opportunity and took it, just like a woman would.” Which is. Not. Not great.
