Fandom Event: Akatsuki-OC Fanfic Challenge
WHAT IS IT?
It's a fanfic writing event, featuring the incomparable narrative talent of Your OC. The Akatsuki is also here.
Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to complete and post a fic of at least 1,000 words and no more than 10,000 words, focused on the Akatsuki and your own original character.
The goal is to make a day of short, fun Akatsuki-and-OC fics.
WHEN IS IT?
The 27th of April 2026.
WHERE DO WE POST?
You post your fic to the akatsuki_oc collection on AO3 on the 27th of April 2026. The collection is currently closed and unrevealed. It will be opened on the 22nd and revealed after the 27th.
If you want to cross post or promote on tumblr, tag @akatsuki-oc-fic-challenge and your fanwork will get reblogged here after the reveal date. It'll be queued on a first-come-best-dressed basis after reveals.
If you make a promo post on tumblr, please put anything NSFW beneath a cut.
WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO?
Okay. So. The plan is thus:
We make or dust off an original character. Turn them upside down. Inspect them for damage. Rotate them.
You write your fic. (I also write my fic.)
We post our fics to the akatsuki_oc collection on AO3 on or before the 27th of April 2026.
We rub our little hands together like greedy flies as I reveal the collection in the early hours of the 28th of April.
We receive a modest number of exciting Akatsuki-and-OC fics to read?
Profit...! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧

Reblog to give prev the power to write their fanfiction
Guess what guys. I wrote a whole 447 words tonight. Much thanks to @tozettastone for putting me on a timer. Here's the last thing I wrote.
Sakura didn’t know what cousin Itachi was talking about but she knew Sasuke. He was okay, she guessed. He was pretty enough.

hmm slightly tipsy and very restless. does anyone have any questions they want me to answer?
what on earth am i going to do with three thousand severe unauthorised words of madara/deidara in the middle of the existing setting of a convoluted fanfiction scenario in which time travelling deidara is tobirama's soulmate
maybe this very post is an AO3 summary
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
hey, haven't seen you in a while, how's it going?
Hey, thanks for the ask!

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning
If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:
These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:
But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.
Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.
If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.
Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.
Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
Update: There's now a Megathread about this on the AO3 subreddit.
Your First Impression of Me vs Impression of Me Now (Anonymous or Not)
Send me an anonymous ask completing the sentence "I wish you would write a fic where..."
OH MY GOSH, YES!!!
enemies to lovers? no, you misunderstood. I want enemies to mortal nemeses to reluctant allies to lovers to heartbroken enemies back to reluctant allies back to lovers.
what happens to your fic after you die?
It depends. Like anything else on the internet, it could just sit on the Archive forever.
But if you want something more than that, then you might want to look into a Fannish Next of Kin (FNOK). This is a person you choose to get control of your account if you’re ever incapacitated or if you die.
How do you choose them? They can be a real life friend or family member. They can be someone you know in fandom. Whoever it is, it should be someone you trust because they’ll be given access to your account in the event of your death. You’ll need to be able to talk to them about how you feel about your fanworks and what you want to have happen to them. Do you want them to stand just as they are? Do you want them added to the orphan_account? Do you want your entire account deleted?
After you have chosen your FNOK, both you and your chosen person will need to send a message to the Abuse team - they’re the team who also manage next of kin requests. Both of you will need an AO3 account in order to do this, so if the person you choose isn’t involved in fandom they’ll need to get an account first.
You don’t have to be next of kin for each other. It’s fine if the relationship is just one way. But, you can only have one next of kin. If there are 2 or more, there is the possibility of disagreements about what you want done, and AO3 has no way to arbitrate those disagreements.
You can end the agreement if you want to. If you have a falling out with your friend, or if they leave fandom and you lose touch, or if you want to end this part of the relationship for any reason, either one of you can send another message to the Abuse team and provide both usernames of the people involved. They’ll send you both a message to let you know the FNOK relationship has ended.
How does AO3 know you’re dead? Your FNOK will tell them by submitting another report to the Abuse team. The Abuse team will then send an email to the address they have on file. If you don’t reply back within 10 days, they’ll pass control of your account over to your FNOK. It is important that you keep your AO3 account email up to date so you don’t miss this message. Remember that AO3 doesn’t know your real life identity, so if the person you trust says you’ve passed and you don’t tell AO3 that you haven’t, then they’ll believe them.
If your account is transferred but you’re still alive, submit a form to the Abuse team and let them know! They’ll do their best to get your account back to you.
You can read these and more details about Fannish Next of Kin over at the AO3 Terms of Service FAQ. Live long and prosper - and plan for the future 🖖
On 20th October 2022, I wrote to the main email address for AO3: Hello. I’m genuinely not sure who I should be contacting or what the process is, so bear with me. Susan Leinbach died on 15th June 2006. She wrote MASH fanfiction using the pseud Iolanthe. Her fanfiction was hosted on her own website, which, some time after her death, lapsed, but a full snapshot exists on the Wayback Machine. I enjoyed Susan’s fanfiction very much. I’d like to transfer her stories to AO3. I’ve spoken to her partner DougS, and he’s said he’s happy for me to do this. [Details re contacting DougS redacted.] I don’t want to host them as pseud under my own profile, Quordle: I’d prefer to set up a profile as Iolanthe (which I think hasn’t been taken, by some inexplicable oversight, but if I’m wrong, Iolanthe modified) and - in consultation with dougs - write a profile for the account that explains where these stories came from and when they were written. Please advise on process. Kind regards. A couple of months later, thanks to AO3’s OpenDoors project, I had my wish: the Iolanthe_memorial account was set up, and I could log in to AO3 and move Susan’s stories from her Waybacked website to the Archive Of Our Own. Doing so took me just a week, moving a few stories a day. I am ever so happy: Iolanthe’s Caught trilogy was the inspiration for Sins & Virtues, and as far as I know, she wrote the first Hawkeye/Mulcahy stories ever, about 20 years ago. I hadn’t realised til just now that AO3 have an actual process - that you can name a Fannish Next Of Kin - but I’m charmed that they do.
The writer's blessing:
May you write 1,500 words with ease. May your characters be lively and not cardboard. May you need little editing. May your muse visit you as soon as you sit. May the Internet not distract you much. May your phone lie dormant while you write.
