Creature of the Sea|| Rowan Blake - Mermaid

Rowan hadn’t known anything was weird with her until she realized she had never been to the beach. Her mother hadn’t let her and for some reason she had always obeyed. At thirteen though her rebellious nature came through after all she was a Californian who had never been to the beach. It was weird it was strange and her friends laughed at her.

Rowan didn’t even know how to swim. So one night she went to the beach taken away by a friend who barely gotten their license. Rowan looked at the water and for once in her life she realized she had been missing something in her life. She was made to the water.

Without hesitation she ran into the see – or rather ran until the water went to her hip. Then – well there wasn’t legs anymore. It was a tail.

 Needless to say Rowan flipped out trying to figure out what had happened. Her friend – she hadn’t known at the time was also a merefolk just laughed at her and told her what had happened.

 Since then every few weeks or so like a sirens song Rowan is pulled back to the beach. Sometimes she wonders if she’ll actually ever stay on land again or if she’ll stay in the water for the rest of her life.

“I have no idea what I want to be this upcoming Halloween” Eric cleared his throat, fumbling with the strings of his hoodie then glance sideways at the person. “Maybe Edward Scissor-hands or um, Neo from the Matrix. What do you think?”

“I’d go with Neo but I think it’s mostly the trench coat and glasses. Can’t beat them.”

“I know especially when they are hungry or something. Well im getting a dog so you can live your dog dream through me if you want? A fish or hamster could be good, i think.”

“Really? What Kind. Like a small dog or a big dog? And I don’t know about a hamster. I’d just think about second grade again.”

He rolls his eyes, handing her his ID. “Yeah actually. I know, I have one of those faces. It’s pretty rad.”

“Thanks. And trust me this isn’t any fun for me. Fucking new policy changes. Had to ask a forty year old for their ID and let me tell you she wasn’t happy.” Flickering down she looks at the Id for a moment and nods. “Whatcha want?”

“Right now is happy hour so the beers are half off from Tap, and the drink of the day is whatever is on the little chalk board behind me.”

“Eh, it’s fine. I know you’re not… you’re just doing your job. I’ll just come back later. I don’t have anything on me but cash.”

“Hey if you want I can get you anything without alcohol for your walk back. Don’t look it but I make a mean virgin hurricane.” Rowan felt bad but with her boss in the bar tonight she really couldn’t do much more.

“Fine, I was just saying that the other bartender doesn’t put up this much of a stink about it. I come here all the time. Here, look at it all you want.”

Rowan looked down at the card for a second and nodded. “Sorry, management has been riding me. And he probably recognizes you so he knows. I’m not usually on this shift. What is it you want?”

“I practically backed away immediately and was like nope. God im scared whenever someone says that theyre lose somewhere. Same here thats why i’ll stick to a pet dog.”

“Same. Like they look like they can and will kill you, you know? Thought about getting a dog but at the same time I got such weird hours at work lately. Don’t think I could take care of it. Maybe I’ll get some fish or something.“

“And I’m telling you, I forgot it. Here, I’ll tell you what. I’ll hand you my school ID and you can look at it like you’re looking at my license. No one has to know it wasn’t really it. I won’t tell anyone you didn’t actually check it. And I promise, next time I’ll bring it.”

“How about I look at the actual birth date on your School ID and if it’s any younger then it should be I throw you out for trying to pull something. You do know they put your birthday on those things right?”

“Look I really don’t want to. Honestly I don’t care but if you look over there, you’re gonna find my boss. Believe it or not I’d rather not get fired.”

“Sorry. Look I’m not trying to be an asshole I just don’t want to get fired, you feel? Is anyone at your house that can take a picture of it. Or do you have any ID on you?”

“And I’m sure you ID is gonna say that too. It’s like it was meant to show your age. Funny huh?” Rowan said putting her hand out.

“Oh come on, I’m almost twenty-one. My birthday is in two months, plus I’ve had a rough day so far. Cut me some slack? Pretty please?”

“Sorry. No alcohol to minors. I really like this job and I’d like to keep it for awhile you know? My advice - go ask another one of your older friends to get you something and take it out to the patio. Strictly not on the books. Or I can make you a cherry coke.”

“Sorry to be a hardass but I need a roof over my head ya know.”

Rowan sighed looking at the girl. “No. Although if I see you ordering anything stronger I am going to ask for that ID alright? Watcha want?”

“Same girl. Im being serious, he was like wanna see my pet snake and everyone awesome he was making a dick joke when all of a sudden he brought it out. Well ive petted a snake like at the zoo and essentially the same as you would any pet just when you hold it is the scary part.”

“Really. Damn. I don’t know what I would have done. Snakes are fucking scary man. They always look like there about to bite you. Don’t think I could keep one as a pet if I’m honest.”

“Look I don’t make the rules. You have to be twenty-one to drink and I need to see your licenses. It’s a policy and I don’t want to get my license taken away.”

“Yes with the little slices i just imagine Thumper from Bambi eating. Same like if we would have walked there coming back would have been us eating and talking and arriving back here all sad since no more food. I met someone who carried his pet snake around and i was like how?”

“Ugh. Yeah I don’t think I could do that. Ever. True. And really? A pet snake. Honestly I don’t get the attractions to having reptiles and stuff. How can you pet it?”
