Haven’t posted on here in years, but I recognized this Kali/Vecna parallel while rewatching volume 1. There’s a very good chance this has been said by somebody else before, but I have not seen it if that’s true
Vecna rage baiting and aura farming on Will at the end of Sorcerer reminds me of Kali in S2. Intentionally making El/Will angry in order to get them to unleash their full powers.
In Kali’s case, she used the anger that El felt towards her past, Papa, Hopper, and her trauma as a whole:
“Good. So find that anger. Focus on that… I want you to find something from your life. Something that angers you. Now channel it.”
In Vecna’s case, he used Will’s trauma (S1 + S2), anger (S3), and sadness (S4) through flashbacks to elicit a very specific response within Will that would help him discover his powers:
“[The children] are weak in body and mind… Easily broken. Easily reshaped. Controlled. The perfect vessels. And you were the first. And you broke so easily. You showed me what was possible… Some minds, it turns out, simply do not belong in this world. They belong in mine.”
I’m not trying to say that Kali and Vecna are similar in more ways than this, because I’m not a subscriber to the Kali traitor theory. But this parallel was very intentional (and for good reason, I think). Their initial reveals in Sorcer are even parallel:
El looking upon Kali for the first time is directly intersected with Mike looking upon Vecna for the first time. Like, there’s no way to not see the parallel between the two scenes. It consistently cuts between one and the other.
This leads to a more popular theory (I think) where everything that’s happened to Will has been completely intentional on Vecna’s part. He knew that Will would get powers after Hopper and Joyce found him in S1, and he’s just been waiting for the right time to get Will to unleash these powers. That time just so happened to be conveniently placed at the end of volume 1!
I personally believe that Will has been possessed/spied on by Vecna/MF since before season 5 began, which means that Vecna would have seen Will’s conversation with Robin about Tammy Thompson. He knew that Will had been inspired by Robin’s speech, so Vecna intensified that emotion tenfold (to the point of traumatization) by reminding Will of his past trauma and then promptly attacking the people that Will loved. By doing that, Vecna’s plan succeeded and Will has now discovered his powers.
I’m sure that Vecna will try to use Will’s powers against him, and that will be a whole ‘nother thing, but that’s for a different thread.
I’m also sure that this entire post has been said before, but I haven’t seen it before because I’m stuck inside of ship wars on twitter instead of supernatural plot discussion 😭😭😭
