the older i get the more it's terrifying to me how much child surveillance is normalized. scared for your child's mental health? here's more tools that will make them feel even more watched at all times. child is experimenting with their gender identity while away from you? we made it this other adult's job to surveil them for you. kid is "enjoying" their "free time" instead of doing homework? we've put parental controls on the things that they like so that you can monitor their private time. like can we fucking stop

I was largely planning on reading this and passing it by but I do have a question: how many people here who are over-surveilled are female/AFAB? I'm curious because I think a lot of the rise of the groypers and Andrew Tate worshippers has largely come from parents not paying attention to what their teen boys were consuming. It's got me wondering if there's a big double-standard going on that's causing problems on both sides: AFAB children are over-monitored and AMAB kids are left to their own devices and possibly detriment. (And that could be entirely off-base, it's just a hypothesis I've got in lieu of any actual anecdotes)

I worked in a national park for a summer, here's how you tell the difference:

- grizzlies have a hump, black bears don't

- black bear snouts are long and thin, grizzly snouts are shorter (and cuter)

- grizzly ears are round, black bear ears are thinner and pointier

- general size, but only one way (a young grizzly might look black bear size, a black bear will never get to grizzly size)

We always called brown black bears "cinnamon bears" too!
