they call me an undercover agent. the way i’m. under the covers :) cozy in bed :)
they call me a sleeper agent the way i. well. i shan’t say.
So cuttlefish have some kind of rudimentary(?) language that has a gestural component. Or, if you don’t want to call it language, they communicate with each other, in part, through gesturing with their arms. (Not sure how a consistent system of signs isn’t a language but I’m not a linguist). Anyway, there is a tank of cuttlefish at the New England aquarium. Usually, the animals totally ignore the visitors. Once when I was there with a friend, the cuttlefish were signing to each other. My friend held his hand up to the glass and began to imitate their gestures with his fingers, and then made a sequence of random signs. The cuttlefish became extremely agitated and signed furiously at him and rapidly flashed different colors, and we will never know what he accidentally said to them. The moral of this story is actually that it’s fucked up how we keep sentient and sensitive beings in a weird little fish jail.
After knowing a few different swan families for two years, we learned some of the sign language they use for “Hello friend! (You know me)” and “Sorry.” Their vocalizations are a little difficult to mimic, but “Hello friend!” and “sorry” are gestures done with the head. There’s also “Hey! Hey! (come start a fight)” which, in a human, involves hands and arms. You can actually get into a feedback loop saying “Hello friend” to friendly swans that actually know you, where you say it and then they get excited and say it back, and then you say it again and they feel like they have to respond. And if you meet a strange swan and they behave aggressively towards you, you can get them to calm down and even say “sorry” by telling them that you know them. This is often easy to lie to them about, since swans think all humans look very similar.
Anyway! It is extremely funny because when humans walking outside encounter a swan, the humans often say “Hey! Hey!” in Swan, and when the swan puffs up and says “Excuse me?” the human says “Come start a fight!” and the swan, particularly if it’s defending a nest, is like “Fine. Okay. I’ll end this.”
And then the human complains that swans are awfully Hostile and Aggressive.
/linguist mode on/ sticking my nose in briefly to say that a consistent system of signs used for communication is definitely a language /linguist mode off/
@yuri-puppies
this seems like useful info for anyone writing sci-fi/fantasy and trying to think about how non-human languages might look!
It doesn’t even have to be a non-human language in jeam m. auels books neanderthals speak sigh language
(even though we now know it probably wasn’t so and they used spoken language it makes tons of sense within the books)
it’s wild how tech literacy lasted like one generation barely before it fell off
The tech industry saw to it. In a drive to both expand their market by making it easier to pick up tech without knowing how it works, and in an effort to lock down controllable walled gardens and ecosystems they could fully control and exploit, tech has continuously and systemically destroyed both the need for tech literacy and the avenues for developing it independently.
You are not supposed to know how your devices work. You are not supposed to modify them without paying a service fee, you are not supposed to add functionality to them unless they sell it to you, and you are DEFINITELY not supposed to repair or reuse them when they could make you replace them at full price.
Tech literacy didn't die, it was slowly strangled out of people.
What a polite baby
Do you have to wash your rice or not?
If you want to get rid of the starchy texture and/or you live in a country where rice isn’t always clean: yes.
If you want extra starchiness or stickiness and/or you care about keeping the nutritional powder in there: no.
If you are making a risotto or a paella: no.
If you are boiling your rice in a lot of water and then draining it like spaghetti to reduce the risk of arsenic exposure: no.
Some sources of rice have trace amounts of arsenic in the soil, some don’t. If you’re paranoid about it or you eat a lot of rice every day you can do research about the source of your rice. If the area where your rice is grown has arsenic in the soil you can get rid of most of it by cooking the rice like pasta.
Wait, washing it gets rid of some of the nutrients?
A lot of commercially sold grains are fortified with nutrients to keep the population from getting 18th century sounding diseases like rickets and scurvy.
The way they fortify white rice in most places is by dusting it with a nutrient powder. If you wash the rice you wash off this nutrient powder. Which is fine if you get enough vitamins from other sources but if you get most of your carbs from rice and rarely eat fruits or vegetables it could become a problem.
Everyone cooks rice slightly differently and if you don’t cook it the exact same way that they do people will threaten to murder your mother. Unluckily for them though, my mother is already dead so I can speak plain truth to the masses without fear.
The way I cook plain rice is I boil twice as much water as rice by volume, dump the unwashed rice into the boiling water, put in a pat of butter and a big pinch of salt, stir it once, and then leave it covered without stirring it for around 17 minutes or so. Then I fluff it up with a fork and serve it.
This makes a rice that is starchy, sticks together, and is a little salty and buttery. That’s the way I like it. Other people have their own preferences. Whatever way you prefer to cook rice is probably also perfectly fine and delicious.
Flowchart.
Uncle Roger may cook his rice any way he pleases but he has no say over how others choose to live deliciously.

As I grow older I feel my capacity to understand that Miss Piggy is not a real person reached a peak in my adolescence and is now on a steady decline. I watched a Wendy Williams interview and there's this part that's like "can we get a ring cam!" and Miss Piggy shows her bling and I'm just like fuck she's so iconic. Miss Piggy who are you wearing? Miss Piggy have you ever considered running for office??
Like literally every time I see Miss Piggy there's a period where I need to readjust to the fact that it's not a person, and I feel that period is getting longer and longer with every instance
now all my Youtube recommendations are filled with Miss Piggy interviews. I’m not complaining. Miss Piggy what’s your secret to ageing so graciously
It's not just the audience; professional journalists, hosts, and actors report it is legitimately difficult to not see the Muppet as a person, and it is, in fact, incredibly easy to interview or act with them once the performer gets properly set up.
Like that one time they couldn't figure out why Kermit's audio was so garbage... then realized they'd put the mic on him instead of the performer.
this has been a very longstanding issue - before the muppet show was even a thing some muppets appeared in commercials, such as rolf the dog they had a continual problem where when people directing/shooting the dogfood commercial would give dirrection to rolf that they would be speaking to the muppet, to which rolf REPEATEDLY had to tell them ‘i cant hear you, you have to talk to him’ and point at the performer underneath him rolf is one of the most embarrassing muppets to need this direction as the performer is this, damn, obvious when not on camera
‘sir, i am a bathroom mat, the man you need to talk to is back there’
I did an interview with Gonzo one time, and when I got into the Zoom call, it was the actor on screen trying to figure out his audio. And then once he did, he went like “OKAY!” and then just like dove to the floor and it was Gonzo and there was never a moment when I doubted that the dude was just Gonzo’s tech guy
I have met a muppet-like puppet in real life and when I tell you that my brain was hacked FUCKING INSTANTLY..... It was a person, I swear it was a person. I asked it for a hug (no i was not 5 years old, i was like 28 at this time). i genuinely don't know what came over me, it was just. It was a person???? Witchcraft
A couple years ago, I was invited to the birthday party of one of my former preschool students. I decided to bring my teaching puppet (a big rat) along because I knew several other kids from that class would be there, and she was always a huge hit with them.
They were, of course, very excited to see her. But what surprised me was that after the kids ran off to play in the sprinkler, the parents around me struck up conversation with the puppet. They continued for at least fifteen minutes, asking her questions like, "how long have you been teaching?" and "eaten out of any good dumpsters lately?" until one dad exclaimed "why have I been talking to a rat puppet this whole time!"
