they are playing in my face
Wasn’t it just utterly ‘charming’ and not mean spirited at all that Peter had to experience what it’s like to kiss/possibly have sex with (please God no) his own elderly aunt May whilst also being forced to watch as one of his worst enemies and an immoral piece of scum who’s stolen his life, body and killed him gets to experience what it’s like to be intimate with Mary Jane even though those are private and precious memories?
Not only is this a kind of sexual abuse of Peter but worse he has to WATCH this happening powerless.
WHY were so few people bothered by this?
So few people were bothered that a terrible human being was, without her consent, able to experience what it’s like to be intimate with Mary Jane.
Just think abut that for a moment.
Doctor Octopus knows what it’s like to sleep with Mary Jane.
But nah.
Best Spidey story of the decade amirite?
Dan Slott was such a genius.
P.S. It really disturbs me when reading intimate scenes with Peter and MJ in old issues that Otto might’ve experienced them too.
The best we can say is that Otto only experienced the memories we saw on the page and nothing else, including anything more intimate.
Connections and bonds are difficult for Kaiba.
Neurodivergent people can struggle their whole lives trying to understand others and to feel understood themselves. It’s easy to give up trying to connect at all. I think Atem was the rare person who understood Seto and who Seto understood, connecting in a niche-to-others way. But both of them felt alive in their battles. And when you’ve been isolated for so long, left in your own head, you might be surprised to see just how much more there is to you as a person than you ever could’ve guessed through finally feeling a connection to somebody. This other person pulls things out of you that you never realized were there. Seto may never have guessed he could feel those things at all.
After being alone for so long, and when connections are rare and difficult to find and you manage find one somehow and it feels so enriching and like the world’s been flung open, only for that bond to vanish, you become so terrified of going back to how you were before, alone with a closed world. You might never experience anything like that again. And it’s an ugly fear. And there comes the avalanche of what the point of even trying to connect at all was, if in the end you just return to that lonely place anyway.
Seto may have feared going back into lonely darkness.
DSoD was a raw portrayal of the ugliness and devastation of grief for Kaiba; though obviously you don’t need to like the film.
But it was also, for me, about the fear of being alone and the fear of being disconnected.
After some serious consideration, I’ve decided to put “A Tale of Two Rulers” on hiatus until July.
Other than going to school and working on this fancomic, I work part time for Ohio Health as a Patient Safety Aide and the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for help at all the local hospitals. I’ve decided to increase my hours to full time, or higher if there’s a need for it. I’m excited to get to help out, but this also means that other things in my life need to be put on a temporary pause.
Hopefully this rough patch (to put it lightly) will be over by July and normal life, art, and general human well-being will make a joyful comeback for everyone.
Until then, please stay safe, healthy, and home as best you can as we all get through this!
Thank you all so much for the honor of your kindness and support.

PAL region ps1 spyro fans (or anyone who may have acquired a spyro 1 PAL/EU rom 8+ years ago) - this is a call to action!
i made a thread about this on twitter, but i thought it’s worth posting here since i have a different set of spyro followers here on tumblr. i’ll try keeping it short and put the longer explanation under the readmore!
have you ever seen this strange blue-themed, helmet-less gnasty gnorc while playing through the PAL (europe) version of spyro 1?
screenshots above were taken from two spyro PAL let’s plays x x posted 2012 and earlier. here are two more videos that i unearthed around the same period by doing advanced searches x x
if you’ve encountered him, you may have (or have had) an uncommon PAL version of the game, which differs from the standard release. another easy pointer that you have this copy is the title screen says “PRESS START” instead of “START GAME” (also, deutsch is spelled incorrectly..)
also note that despite switching languages, the words PRESS START stays in english instead of switching to the selected language like the normal PAL version
here’s a side-by-side comparison of the copy in question (seen left), to the standard PAL version (seen right, which most people have and is easy to find online as well)
this is where i need your help -
if you could please boot your old PAL discs or roms of EU spyro the dragon and check the title screen for the “PRESS START” text above the language selector, i would be very appreciative! if you find it, please contact me via ask, IM, or email me kendyliris(at)yahoo.com
(a bit more info on this copy and why i’m looking for it below)
update: i’ve been informed that someone finally acquired this build! it’s not publicly available yet but, it will eventually be documented and released just like the other spyro 1 prototypes/pre-release builds that have been on hiddenpalace.org - but this time as the first PAL-region pre-release build. sweet!
if the disc image info is accurate, the build date seems to be just a few days before the final PAL build. very interesting how the many the PAL changes (START GAME rather than ‘press start’, bloodless gnorc swords in dark hollow, changed gem placements in metalhead) aren’t implemented yet and still resemble the USA version, in a build only a few days older than the final european one
there are a few bugs with this copy too, such as gnasty’s loot apparently being difficult to get into, and a few dragons completely missing in action (their rescue cutscenes play with dialog but their character models are..invisible…) indicating that it could have either been dumped from a scratched disc, and/or perhaps some things weren’t implemented properly when it was built… not really easy to say – but the point remains that this build has beta gnasty gnorc (or as i call him The Elusive Blue Bastard) and a few other fun oddities so it is worth preserving despite the flaws
thanks to everyone who had a look at their PAL copies!
the build is released!
a couple of yall were asking for a followup, so here’s a link to the video by hwd405 who released it to the public! the video discusses the various differences and similarities between this build and the final PAL build, as well as with the NTSC-U build which it more resembles tbh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeI-6zXIKcI
if you’re looking to obtain a copy to check it out for yourself, it’s now available on hiddenpalace.org: https://hiddenpalace.org/Spyro_the_Dragon_(Aug_27,_1998_prototype)
some images released of the spyro the dragon 1998 prototype! read about it here
Christos Gage should never have been allowed to write Spider-Man
The thing I love about Otto, he is the guy who…Peter Parker is supposed to be the everyman, and in a lot of ways he is, but he is always dating the most beautiful women in the world…supermodels, Gwen Stacy…And Otto was the guy, I am not a big fan of the late-90s as an era of Spider-Man. There was a character called Stunner who came along and was this big Amazonian woman with super-strength, who was Otto’s partner and love-interest and the big reveal was that she was a virtual reality simulation and the real person was an overweight woman in a virtual reality machine. But when Otto finds out he says, I didn’t love you for what you looked like, I loved you for your mind
P.S.And before you bring up the PS4 game, there is no evidence I know of that confirms that the story was mostly him. There is no evidence to suggest he came up with the story for that game from scratch and we know for a fact other writers were involved in making the story for that game. Compare how he writes PS4 Spidey in Spider-Geddon to how he is written in the game and you will notice the difference.
P.P.S. For the record the quote/link was something someone else brought to my attention.
Gage mostly helped in writing dialogue and doing some cleanup for the game, the story was mostly Jon Paquette and his team.
I don’t really see the problem tbh.
a) Deconstruction of Spider-Man that invalidates a core concept of who he is by violating the suspension of disbelief inherent to his series
b) Writing Mary Jane as nuclear levels OOC and deconstructing her character by having her victim blame Spider-Man and give him a break up speech…when they were not dating!
c) Denigrating Black Cat, MJ, Anna Maria and Spider-Man in one stroke by falsly claiming Peter is shallow because he likes attractive women like Felicia and MJ, treating them like they have no value outside of their looks, making Anna Maria a misogynist for treating them that way and all in order to build up Otto, who’s a fucking genocidal villain!
Funny, Otto didn’t have a problem with Mary Jane’s looks when he tried to rape her. Truly, a model Ally.
Whoever came up with the idea that comic book movies don’t need to be faithful to its source material need to be hanged for treason.
I finally made my very own Mary Jane Watson Build-a-bear!!!
Ingredients:
One of the cheapest priced bears-- "National Bear Day 2019 bear".
Spider-Man shirt
Discounted "Brave" wig.
Personal recorded message voice box. I used MJ's voice clip from The Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon saying her trademark line: Face it Tiger you just hit the jackpot.
So if this is a new take on Mary Jane and all takes are valid
Then this take on Superman is valid
And so is this take on Batman
And this take on Dragonball
This take on Robocop
This take on Transformers
This take on the Lone Ranger
I mean, if you want to argue that no take on a source material is ever poorly done or a mistake or entirely wrongheaded, you can, but you’re basically arguing against having taste. And as long as you don’t have taste and you don’t care what you’re watching, why don’t you save money, skip the theater, and just watch some paint dry?
Concept: what if Atem was approaching s0 as a video game?
I’ve spent a lot of time trying to make sense of Atem’s pov in the early manga (the meta answer is that it doesn’t make sense and he doesn’t really have a pov because he isn’t being written as a character in his own right until around Duelist Kingdom, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) and here’s what I’ve got: He’s been in a magic coma for 3000 years. He has amnesia. He keeps getting dragged into the driver’s seat of Yugi’s body every time Yugi feels a strong negative emotion, and the situations he finds himself in are stressful at best and life-threatening at worst. He has no idea who he is, what he is, how his powers work, or what he’s supposed to be doing. As Shadi points out, he’s afraid. And as Shadi also points out, he desperately doesn’t want to acknowledge that fear, even to himself.
He also, canonically, breaks down pretty much every problem he faces into Gamer Metaphors™
So here’s what I’m thinking: what better way to not have a panic attack while someone’s pointing a gun at your friend’s head, not have to ask any difficult questions about your sense of self, and not have to think too hard about the ethical ramifications of any of your actions, then to LARP as a video game protagonist?
He spends most of Tuesday hanging out in the game’s hub (the puzzle maze), waiting for a level to start. Finally, Player 1 switches over to Player 2. The negative emotion that brought the switch on? Fear for Anzu’s safety, and fury at the person hurting her. Okay, so, Level Objective: Save Anzu from Mugger. What items does he have in his inventory? A bottle of alcohol, a lighter…..
A week later, Yugi collapses to the ground. A new bruise is throbbing on his cheek. His grandpa’s going to be heartbroken. He’d thought he had a new friend, but it was just another person who thought he was weak, gullible, an easy target. Just another bully.
For a split second, Yugi wants him dead.
Level Objective: Make Kaiba Experience Death
Despite Ultimate Spider-mans faults, I absolutely love the Peter MJ stuff. At least they gave us them, but what if the new cartoon which... I don't want to be mean to those that like the show, but it just feels like an f-u to the fans of Spidey. That might be because they seem to call in line with Slotts evil run.
I know absolutely nothing about this new series, but the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon was definitely the start of Spider-Man’s downfall. I blame that show for the MCU Spider-Man although at least that show had Mary Jane.
Spidey’s downfall began with OMD which led to BND where he was written as a manchild.
USM the show was the first Spider-Man film/TV media that (at least in a very long time) was directly under Marvel’s oversight. Joe Kelly, Jeph Loeb, Bendis and other people who have literally written Spider-Man comics worked on the show. IIRC Joe Kelly wrote at least one Deadpool episode (Kelly is the most acclaimed DP comic writer ever) and IIRC Bendis wrote an episode adapting a 2 part USM comic story he did where Spider-Man swaps bodies with Wolverine.*
Poignantly if you look at USM’s Spider-Man you could totally believe he’d grow up into BND era Spider-Man.
The fact that this was the end result of when Marvel themselves got to do whatever they wanted with Spider-Man on TV was no accident.
The fact that the new cartoon is so reminiscent of Slott’s work (to the point where they’ve adapted Spider Island and Sword wielding Hobgoblin and Peter goes to HORIZON High or something) is also no accident.
Allegedly Slott has some involvement with the animation side of things (and had some involvement in the PS4 video game too) and his old buddy, Stephen Wacker (editor of the Spider Books beginning at least at the start of BND and up until around the end of Superior) was an executive producer on the first season of the 2017 show and the last season or two of Ultimate Spider-Man. Which is why in that last season or so you saw Kaine’s Scarlet Spider appear (Kaine adopted that identity during Wacker’s tenure), Doc Ock in the armour he had when he was dying of cancer (again Wacker’s tenure) and generally other stuff from his tenure like Flash as Agent Venom, Harry as American Son, Spider-Verse, etc
*The comic implies Wolverine in Peter’s 15 year old body tried to have sex with 15 year old Mary Jane btw and the cartoon for children decided to just straight up show him trying to come onto her hard. Like out of context the scene plays like a prelude to a sexual assault it’s fucked up!
look I know it's easy to write Battle for the Bronze off as "just a pointless filler duel where Joey loses (again)," but it's the ep where
- Joey comes within inches of winning, despite the fact that Kaiba's an international champion, Joey just picked up the game a few months ago, and Joey (understandably) got steamrolled back when they dueled a few months ago
- Joey takes control of Kaiba's Blue-Eyes and attacks him with it
- Joey spends the duel verbally picking apart Kaiba's entire worldview, managing to make Kaiba's approach to dueling look ridiculous and a little sad
- Joey stops giving a shit whether Kaiba thinks he's a ""true duelist"" or not
The moral of the episode is that Joey may have (barely) lost, but he's able to gracefully pick himself up afterward without losing all sense of self-esteem. Kaiba's not at a point where he's capable of doing that yet. In that respect (which is the respect that, like. actually matters), Joey has surpassed Kaiba, and they both know it.
also it's Good Fun Card Game Banter
Say what you will about Dunst’s Mary Jane but at least she was
a) A complex character in her own right instead of a Disney Channel sitcom character
b) AN interpretation of Mary Jane. An abstract, composite, not that faithful interpretation, but AN interpretation nevertheless
Out of the Spider-Man cinematic love interest, she’s the worst one, with Emma Stone being the best.
lol no
Let’s discount sidebar love interests like Ursula, RaimiGwen, Betty or into the Spider-Verse (you could debate which MJ, which Gwen with that one it becomes crazy). Hell let’s not even talk about them as far as comparing them to the comics.
Michelle is the worst.
And it isn’t even a contest.
DunstMJ had actual character development, an actual arc, an actual subplot of her own. She was a rounded character with flaws.
Michelle meanwhile…is an impression of a character from the Breakfast Club only less edgy because her movies are in fact high budget Disney Channel films.
Whilst there was an actual love story across the 3 movies with believable ups and downs and roadblocks that complicated the situation, with Michelle and Peter we start out with her being a jerkass to him, then out of nowhere the suddenly hot kid who aged up due to the Infinity Gauntlet not killing him is a rival and wouldn’t you know it he took a picture of a teenager undressed in front of an adult woman and then a satellite drone strike nearly killed him so he didn’t send the photo.
You know typical romance movie shit amirite!
Oh and did I forgot to mention that you can understand why peter and Mary Jane would find one another attractive because of their personalities and arcs across the movies whilst in the MCU…we have no idea.
Why does Michelle like Peter? What about him attracts him to her exactly? Why does Peter randomly have the hots for this girl who’s been a jerkass to him for the prior movie?
I shouldn’t have to write a fanfiction to explain why two people like one another if that is the premise of their whole relationship.
I mean Jesus Christ, conveying to the audience why character A and Character B find one another attractive is romance writing 101 isn’t it?
And as for Emma Stone, she had the best chemistry with her Spider-Man no denying that….but best love interest?
By what metric exactly?
Again if it’s chemistry fine.
But if it’s her own character unto itsel…lol….no. Her whole arc revolves around her relationship with Peter and secondarily her Dad.
But at least you can understand why they like one another.
kaiba's emotional arc in DSOD can be described, almost in its entirety, by pop icon britney spears' legendary 1998 megahit "...baby one more time"
Hey, I'm currently in the process of doing reviews of all the episodes of The Spectacular Spider-Man, and afterwards I am going to review Fighting Crime, Spinning Webs. I was wondering if you were interested, since you are the one who wrote the fanfic. Just note, I talk a lot, and I mean a lot. Once I get started on something I love talking about, it's hard to make me shut up. So some of these videos go on and on. Might get annoying. I don't know... Anyway... Just letting you know. It will still be a few days before I finosh reviewing the show and get to your fanfic, but I wanted to let you know ahead of time.
