“This feels,” Zeetha says, stroking her chin, “even for you lunatics, a little excessive.”
“What, how?” Agatha asks as Tarvek says, “I’m sorry, is there someway else we can get this kind of power?”
“Oh, no, no,” Zeetha says, in the wrecked and grounded hull of Castle Wulfenbach, surrounded by courses of wire and lightning and the occasional fire, shouting over the groaning of its busted skeleton, the great thunder of its tattered envelope flapping in the valley wind. “But he’s been upside-down for like twenty minutes now.”
“Oh, shoot!” Agatha claps her hands to her mouth, then hurriedly slams that one button she was indeed supposed to press about twenty minutes ago. “Sorry, Gil!”
“ ’S fine, ‘s fine,” Gil replies, voice woozy and his face as red as a tomato. “Noooooooooo trouble at all.”
“So this looks like it’s going to go great,” says Violetta, and Tarvek growls.
The sky is black and curdled with storm, actual thunder making all the dials and little diodes rattle when it hits, as it increasingly frequently does. The wind is brutal and freezing, because of course Lucrezia and her geister army (now with flying units!) didn’t have the courtesy to bring down the Castle anywhere below the snow line. Helped with the fires! Sadly didn’t deter the geisters.
“Down, nerds!” Dupree hollers, and Agatha and Tarvek and everyone else hits the deck as Bohrlaika vaults over them, Dupree astride her shoulders, hands dug deep into the wiring of the clank’s head. Dupree and her new pet battle clank make quick, squishy work of the spiders climbing their little mountain of rubble, with an unsmiling ferocity that unnerves even Agatha.
“I’m not sure the taking of lives is going to keep her occupied forever,” says Violetta, a little contemplatively. “She’s going to want Gil back soon.”
“Great!” shouts Tarvek, who was aggressively unnerved several hours ago and has shown no signs of recovery. “So do we! And so does, apparently, the Other! She can get in line!”
“I’m very popular,” Gil adds, with a loopy grin.
