Best song in the album, imo.
VILLAINS COMING 25 AUG 2017
Amine back at it again with another bop.
I'm a big fan of Kendrick, but I rarely went back to his Section.80 record. And when I decided to revisit the album, I found this opening track reminding me of the social situation I currently live in.
I live in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, where not too long ago our governor was found guilty of blasphemy and sentenced to two years in prison. My governor, Ahok, was the first non-Muslim and Chinese governor in a country where the majority of people are ethnically Javanese that practices Muslim beliefs. Aside from his dissimilarity with the people he's leading, Ahok is also notorious for his firm, bold and outspoken style along with running a corrupt-free office in the midst of corrupters and opportunists that usually runs the ship. He often scolded incapable staff and rebuke his rivals and the press firmly, no-bullshit style. He welcomes civilians to his office to complain, share their stories or to simply ask for help.
He was running to continue to be Jakarta's governor in the next period and so he was actively campaigning while continuing the works as our current governor. And in one of the rallies, he said some things that suggests that some people had abused a Quranic verse whom some clerics believe prohibits Muslims from electing a non-Muslim leader. Thus he was charged with blasphemy and lost in the re-election.
To me it was plain ridiculous. Religion is an idea, and people are able to critique ideas. It was clear that his rivals and extremists groups was set to prevent him to win. If you watch the political debate between the candidates, you will laugh at how silly his rival is being. He literally said that actions do not matter if we don't dream, a sentenced used to fight off the statements from supporters that said you should choose Ahok if you want a working government that can deliver results. How can you not want your own goverment to improve and move forward? And the only answer I could find is because those people will get more benefits materially and socially if the political scene sticks to the status quo, which means running a corrupt government with close knit groups of people from the same background at the head of it, so businessmen and officials have easy access to the country's resources and other stuff that will help them gain things for their own interests.
I hope I explained this well and it made sense for anyone reading and please forgive all the grammatical errors. Most of my friends and family are tired and pissed off at this situation, and the only thing we can do is move forward and try to get the best result out of this. And it really doesn't help that there are people who questioned us who went to rallies, protests and who cried when the judge sentenced our beloved governor. Caring about politics is not lame or useless. And sometimes, after those long and tiring events, all you wanna do is shout, "Fuck your ethnicity and religion!" and play Sunday Bloody Sunday while hoping the central government can do something to make things better. I really hope the new government at the very least do not halt all the constructions and development that are currently going to better our city. I hope they don't fuck up all the programs and plans that the current office already started and not put our city a step back.
