“Sorry,” Al chuckled. “Hold on I’ll come down.” He climbed down until he reached a point where he figured he probably wouldn’t hurt himself if he jumped. He landed in front of Scorpius with a grin, “Ta da!” He gestured for his friend to follow him as he sat underneath the tree. “I was deliberately not thinking. What’re you up to?”

Scorpius watched Al climb down from his perch, wincing a bit when he jumped. Luckily, the other male seemed to have landed fine, not that that really made his anxiety go away. He shook his head, smiling fondly and sat next to him under the tree. “What were you doing then? Connecting with the birds? I was just gonna go study by the lake. Library has too many couples snogging in it.”

‘ there’s nothing going on, what do you mean?’ she tapped her pen against her other hand with a nod. ‘ okay so..herbology notes?’

“i just meant everything with ezekiel,” he explained, shaking his head but obediently opening his notebook. “can we quiz each other? i always find that helps me figure out what parts i don’t understand.”

Piper glanced down at the paper she was doodling on instead. Hoping if she could think of something else it would be the perfect distraction. But all she could think about was what he said. God, it was almost like he was reading her mind, it was exactly what she was thinking and feeling. Finally her eyes met his when he spoke again, returning the smile. “No…no you’re fine. Its almost nice to know I’m not the only one who is feeling so worried. I was starting to think I was just overreacting.” 

Scorpius nodded in agreement. “I felt like that too... but it’s hard to feel like we’re overreacting when Ezekiel’s still missing. Merlin, I’d hate to be a Ravenclaw, they must be feeling wretched,” he said, his chest tightening in sympathy for the members of the other house. He knew if someone went missing from Slytherin, even if they weren’t particularly close, he’d feel like there was a gaping hole in their common room, something distinctly missing and wrong.

“yeah, quidditch captains also get bathroom privileges. that’s one of the reasons why i wanted to be captain in the first place,” james answered. there was a playful lilt to his voice, but the slight truthfulness behind his joking words was distinguishable. “use it all the time. i’m in a committed relationship with bubble baths. dorm bathrooms what? don’t know her.”

scorpius had no idea how he’d managed to forget that little nugget. maybe it was because he’d never actually run into james or any other captains in the prefect bathrooms, and he always took baths at ungodly hours to ensure he’d be alone. “no, totally, i definitely kn-knew that,” he said, nodding a little too vigourously.

“oh, scorpius. i nearly didn’t see you, love,” lucy greeted, icy blue eyes scanning the slytherin up and down. “you look rather distracted. is everything alright?”

scorpius was shaken out of his thoughts when lucinda called his name, and he blinked, shooting his housemate a small, tired smile. “huh? yeah, i’m fine... just uneasy with everything that’s going on. you alright?”

Al sat perched upon a tree branch, staring idly at the sky. He’d found solace in trees ever since he was a little boy; they made him feel safe from all the worries of the world beneath him. He’d needed that escape a lot after the nightwalkers announcement. A gentle rustle called his attention down where a person walking nearby. “Hi,” he called out. “I don’t mind if you want to sit out here or anything. Just, you know, letting you know I’m up here. You’d be surprised how many people don’t notice someone sitting in a tree.”

Scorpius had thought he’d eventually get used to Albus sneaking up on him or perching somewhere hidden and startling him. He was wrong. They’d been schoolmates for six years now and the other boy managed to get him every time. “Merlin, Al, I almost had a heart attack,” he said, tilting his head up to spot his friend on the branch. “Thinking deep thoughts?”

It wasn’t often one would find Molly Weasley breaking the rules, though occasionally she’d make an exception in the name of relaxation. With everything gone awry at Hogwarts, even she needed an escape from it all. Everything was momentarily right in the world as she sat atop the Astronomy tower, her wand casting a gentle glow, a throw blanket thrown over her legs, and a book in her lap. However, her peace of mind is fleeting as the sound of ascending footsteps pull a grown from her lips. “Hello..? Who’s there?”

Scorpius had a fondness for the stars. He figured it had to do with his family’s long history of naming children after constellations and stars. Whenever he was too worried or anxious or felt like he was drowning, he took the liberty of climbing up to the astronomy tower. “Sorry,” he said, when he noticed Molly. “Didn’t realize anyone else would be here.” Ordinarily he should’ve docked house points for her being out of bed after hours, but these weren’t normal circumstances so he didn’t bother.

It was not uncommon to find Mason in the library. After all, he still took pride in keeping up with his studies. He instantly looked up from his book to the person who took a seat in front of him. Mason was very observant and he wondered if they were here for homework, distraction or something else. He arched a brow, “You alright?”

The more time Scorpius had to work himself into a panic attack by thinking over every angle of Zeke’s disappearance, the more anxious he’d gotten, and by the time he’d gotten to the library, he was shaking like a leaf, clutching his textbooks like a life line. He blinked, Mason’s words shaking him out of his thoughts. “I —” I wanna go home. But that was immature. “Just stressed,” he said eventually.

   Ximena didn’t really know what was going on. Despite the outrage, prefects were not told the circumstances of the situation with the message in the Great Hall. She did not liked to be questioned however. “Ezekiel is none of your concern and I do not need to answer to you. The situation is being handled. Now head back to your common room before I deduct house points. I will not ask again. It is well past curfew.”

Scorpius frowned, shooting Ximena a wounded look, and crossing his arms. “You don’t need to be so harsh,” he shot back. “It was just a question. A simple I don’t know would’ve sufficed.” Frankly, the way everyone was acting was making him way more worried than mere disappearance on its own would’ve. He had a distinct feeling that things were not as benign as they were being told.

the mood around the castle was still solemn with the news of the missing student. days had gone by and noelle found that she was still having a hard time smiling when she normally had before. did she know the student personally? no, but she had had a small crush on the older student last year, making a bit silly of her to feel this deeply for him. it wasn’t like they had dated, just a small school girl crush and here she was worried sick over him. that and the fact it could have happened to her. anyone really. perhaps that was why she had kept to herself the past few days, barely talking and when she was spoken to all she could say was, “that sounds….great.” like now. “really, we can go do that if you want…sounds fun…”

Scorpius had always prided himself on looking out for his younger schoolmates. He wanted their time at Hogwarts to be less stressful than his own had been, so if he could help even a little, he wanted. So naturally, when he’d noticed Noelle looking distinctly upset, he’d gone over to her and asked if she was okay. When she replied, he frowned, her words making no sense. “Noelle? I was just asking if you wanted to talk or something. You look upset.”

‘ what? review?’ alice gathered her thoughts and quickly nodded her head, throwing the other a smile. ‘ yeah, yeah- sure, of course! we can definetly review. i have it right here, with all the notes and everything.’ she rambled on and pulled her notebook out.

Scorpius’ frown didn’t waver, and he was still watching Alice worriedly, despite pulling his own book and notes towards him. “Okay,” he said uncertainly. “But if you want to talk about everything going on, I’m here for you.”

Part of Piper wanted to be comforted in the fact that someone else was just as worried as her, but if anything it only increased her fears. “You too?’ she started to fiddle with the material of her sweater. The books and sketch book in front of her quickly was a thought in the back of her mind. “It is like a feeling that I can’t shake. No matter how hard I try it won’t seem to go away.” 

Scorpius nodded, sighing and glancing down at his book, the words blurring in front of him. “Me too. It’s this pit in my stomach. Like something bad is coming,” he said. “I’ve never believed much in divination but I really feel like there’s this energy in the air and it’s not good.” He shook his head, shooting Piper a small, forced smile. “I’m not helping am I? Sorry.”

james smirked, “mate, i’ve never cooked up any bad ideas in the first place,” he said smugly. while he’d occasionally gotten into sticky situations that resulted in him having to serve weeks’ worth of detention, james easily manoeuvred his way out of being caught. “i mean, sometimes i get too excited and my ideas end up not bein’ properly planned out.”

Scorpius couldn’t help but make an incredulous noise. “That’s d-definitely not true,” he insisted, shaking his head as he thought about the multitude of stories Al had told him about James’ shenanigans and the ones he’d witnessed himself. “But I will give you cuh-credit for this one.” He didn’t know what came over him, but he tilted his head to the side. “Have you ever been? To the prefect’s bathroom?”

alice did not feel good- she felt her legs jitter as she looked down and she nodded at the words of the other, but she couldn’t concentrate. her thoughts were running wild- the fear she felt earlier was slowly coming back and as much as she tried to focus on something else, she couldn’t. ‘sorry-i’ she finally said, moving a hand through her hair.’-didn’t quiet get that, what did you need help with again?’

Scorpius had been wanted to review his herbology notes with someone, and he figured that Alice would be his best bet — since the Hufflepuffs and Slytherins shared that class together and her dad was the professor. “Oh I was just asking if you wanted to review together but — Alice, are you alright?” He asked, peering concernedly at her.

Piper let out a breath when he said she was fine, the last thing she wanted to do was to make someone uncomfortable. But she also hoped she wasn’t the only person on edge since the morning. It wiped away all the excitement that came with the weekend getaway. “Yeah, you could say that.” She started softly, “Just this morning was really…surprising and concerning. To say the least.” 

Scorpius nodded. He’d somehow managed to be even more anxious than usual after he’d heard the news. “Yeah... I’m feeling a lot of the same,” he admitted, chewing on the end of his quill. “I’m trying to tell myself that it’s best not to assume the worst but...I also have this awful pit in my stomach. I kind of want to go home.”

james’ brows rose up to his hairline, “huh, we’ll see,” james laughed. at scorpius’ response, james drew his hand back, briefly wondering if he’d unknowingly crossed over scorpius’ personal bubble. “you know what i do?” he dimmed his voice into a whisper, “multi-task. write ‘em essays while chilling in the tub,” he scrunches his nose, “i mean, just make sure you don’t drop them in the water.”

Scorpius blinked at the suggestion, and James’ proximity, before the actual words processed and he immediately started thinking, losing his nerves as his brain start racing a mile a minute. “That’d actually be an easy fix, just need a modified bubble-heard charm, to protect the parchment instead of my head,” he said, tilting his head to the side as he contemplated actually doing his work in the bath. He had to admit it did sound nice. “It’s not the worst idea you’ve ever had.”
