“a little bit of both,” james answered easily, letting the cloak slide down his shoulders. he strutted over to his brother with a shit-eating grin on his face, “y'never fail to get all jumpy like a bloody cat every single time, it’s absolutely hilarious.” 

“Mhmm, you just don’t want to admit that you can’t come up with a new prank.” His eyes instantly went wide with regret, “That is not a challenge. Try anything, and I swear I will do something worse.”

“doesn’t explain why,” balthazar said rolling his eyes back at the other man. al potter was never one of balthazar’s favorite people and he made it no secret in hiding in this. “i’m always this delightful, lucky for you monkey boy.”

“It’ll forever be a mystery. Don’t lose sleep over it.” Al never gave much thought to anyone outside of his family and small circle of friends, but he couldn’t say he was a fan of Balthazar. He didn’t see a reason to hide that. “I’ll be lucky when this conversation is over.”

Al’s parents were much cooler than Kirsten’s, who knew nothing about Hogwarts except that Kirsten needed to act right and show up to classes. But it’s not like they could do anything all the way in Ireland. “Any period can be a free period if you believe in yourself,” she said, grinning. “So is this what you do then when you’ve got time to yourself? Spend it… by yourself in silence? There’s got to be more to this for you than just staring at some trees, right?”

"I don't do this a lot, but nope right now this," Al gestured vaguely at his surroundings, "is the whole thing. I mean climbing up here and jumping off at the end is fun, but just being up here is, I don't know, nice," the last word was almost a question. He'd never been good at condensing his thoughts, and he didn't know Kirsten well enough to attempt a better explanation. “What about you, do you usually hide under trees when you cut class?”

Scorpius watched Al climb down from his perch, wincing a bit when he jumped. Luckily, the other male seemed to have landed fine, not that that really made his anxiety go away. He shook his head, smiling fondly and sat next to him under the tree. “What were you doing then? Connecting with the birds? I was just gonna go study by the lake. Library has too many couples snogging in it.”

"You joke, but that's a brilliant idea. I'm gonna befriend all the birds Disney princess style." He scrunched up his nose in distaste, "Who the fuck snogs in the library? It's dusty and there's usually other people-- Merlin, Madam Pince is always there," he shuddered. “Just why? It’s not like there’s a shortage of empty space at this school.”

‘ you know that technically you came to me, right?’ alice asked with a hint on her face as she perked up a little bit, nodding her head and standing up. ‘ okay, let’s go then! ii am ready for a small ktichen adventure.’

“And aren’t you glad I did?” he kept his tone light and playful, pleased that it seemed that was brightening Alice’s mood a bit. He waited for her to stand before beginning the way out of the common room, “Any idea what you wanna make? Head baker should choose.”

the voice above him clearly was what made him stop and look up. he raised an eyebrow, hands in his jacket as he spotted a pair of feet in the tree unable to really see who it was from where he was standing. “what the…” he muttered to himself before taking a step to the side and spotting that it was a potter. “are all of you this crazy?” the slytherin called out shaking his head. “who the fuck sits in a tree?”

“Me,” Al called simply before glancing down. He flashed the Slytherin a sarcastic smile before cheerily adding, “I’d highly recommend it. Might get you to lighten the fuck up.” He rolled his eyes, “Did someone piss in your tea this morning or are you always this delightful?”

with his invisibility cloak, james proceeded to wrap the cloth around his own head, leaving him visible only from the neck down. “you can creep the first years out if you do this,” james’ cackle echoed off the walls of the currently empty gryffindor common room. 

Al expected his brother to be in the common room the moment the door swung open to reveal his laughter. He wasn’t expecting him to be only a head. He’d seen that gag plenty of times, but he still jumped slightly. “Dammit James,” any attempt at sounding annoyed was quickly lost to laughter. “Did you see me on the map or were you planning on scaring first years?”

    Corvus stopped when he heard a voice and then looked up at the tree. He was surprised to see someone up there. Corvus couldn’t help but chuckle, “Oi, careful you don’t fall though.” He warned as he smiled up at him, “I was just walking by but you’re right– I never would’ve saw you up there. You alright?” 

“I never do.” He looked down and returned the other boys smile, “I’m good. How about you? Headed on an adventure?” he teased.

Scorpius had thought he’d eventually get used to Albus sneaking up on him or perching somewhere hidden and startling him. He was wrong. They’d been schoolmates for six years now and the other boy managed to get him every time. “Merlin, Al, I almost had a heart attack,” he said, tilting his head up to spot his friend on the branch. “Thinking deep thoughts?”

"Sorry," Al chuckled. "Hold on I'll come down." He climbed down until he reached a point where he figured he probably wouldn't hurt himself if he jumped. He landed in front of Scorpius with a grin, "Ta da!" He gestured for his friend to follow him as he sat underneath the tree. “I was deliberately not thinking. What’re you up to?”

Piper decided to step outside and do some drawing, after finishing homework she needed to do something to distract her mind. Which has been running wild since the news of the missing student and the nightwalkers. She nearly jumped when she heard a voice from above and glanced up. A small smile grew on her face, “Thank you for the heads up. I actually wouldn’t mind knowing there is someone else around.” She sat down her bag by the tree, “What brings you out here?” 

“Well that’s good considering I was here first,” his tone was teasing and a small smile accompanied his words. “I’m always out here, I like it outside. What about you?” he glanced down at her bag, “and please don’t say homework-- it’s way too nice out here for that.”

With another laugh, she waved her hand dismissively, mouthing the words ‘I’m good.’ “You like trees, huh? Look at you, ol’ nature boy.” Kirsten took a second to give the tree he was hiding up in a once over, then gave it a nod of mocking approval. “Classes… Well, I say I’m done with them. Does that count? I think transfiguration is almost over, and that’s my last class of the day, so then yes, I’ll officially be done.” She leaned against the trunk of the tree, gazing upwards. “What about you? You’re not following in my footsteps, are you?”

“Close enough,” he said with a small smile. He adjusted his position, so he could see her better and shook his head. “There’s no way I’d get away with that.” His parents were tolerant of most of his rule breaking, but they drew the line at slacking off in school. His grades suffered enough when he tried his best (they said it nicer of course, usually some variation of him trying his best being more important than his marks). “I have a free period right now, best part of being a sixth year.”

Kirsten was supposed to be in transfiguration right now, but she decided to take a walk instead. She avoided doing the homework, so naturally, she avoided going in to class so she wouldn’t have to come up with an excuse that wasn’t ‘I forgot.’ She found a nice shady spot under a tree, and took a quick glance around before knocking back a swig of whiskey from a tiny flask she kept pocketed in her robes. Al’s voice surprised her though, and she ended up swallowing the wrong way, sending her into a coughing fit. “Fucking hell!” When she calmed herself, she looked up at the branch her housemate was perched on and laughed. “Well, I completely believe that considering I just demonstrated how true it is. What are you doing up there?”

"Shit," he winced, a sign of embarrassment more than any sort of surprise. "Sorry Kirsten," he offered a weak smile. "I'm not really doing anything. I just…" he searched for a normal reason someone would be up in a tree. After a moment he surrendered to the fact that there wasn't one and shrugged his shoulders. "I just like trees. Are you done with your classes for the day?"

the girl looked at al, an acquaintance but someone she knew for several years now. honestly she hadn’t been expecting anyone to talk to her in the first place which was why she was confused and a bit out of it besides the worry. blinking she shook her head as if to clear all the bad thoughts that had been stored in her head for the past week or so. as if it was that easy. “honestly, i skipped lunch today due to homework, so i would love to walk to dinner,” she said offering a smile to him. it couldn’t hurt to act normal after all. “i think so…are you?”

"Awesome," he smiled back. "I'm doing alright,” he nodded easily, keeping up with the pleasantries to the best of his ability. A moment of silence slid by while he searched his mind for something, anything, to say. He had always struggled with small talk. "So umm, how're classes going? Any of the professors start talking about O.W.L.s yet?"

alice wraps her arms around herself and she tightens the grip in order to calm herself down, a small smile appears on her lips as she nods at albus’ words- despite not knowing what was wrong, she appreciated that he didn’t ask for now; he knew she’d probably avoid anyway. ‘join? yeah, of course! i haven’t baked some in a while either.’

“Alice, if you’re asking for assistance you’ve come to the perfect place,” he beamed. “An adequate one at the very least,” he assured. “I’ve never actually baked on my own, but I’ve helped my gran enough times that I can promise I won’t mess anything up.”

“Oh!” Ruth startled slightly, hearing the unexpected noise. She was always a little timid, but the news of Ezekiel James’ disappearance had her even more on edge. However, upon seeing the fellow hufflepuff, she gathered herself quickly and waved. “Hello. Um, thank you! You’re right; I don’t think I would’ve noticed at all. It’s an awfully clever place to hide.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” he smiled apologetically and began making his way down the tree. “Or hide from anyone-- that just sort of happens when you hang out... well anywhere people don’t usually, really.” He jumped down from the last branch and dusted himself off. “I know it might not look like it, but it’s a good place to think.”

    Cora instantly took out her wand even though she knew she couldn’t really use it upon hearing a voice but then glanced around to see the boy sitting up on the tree. It took her a moment to register who it was. Cora knew there was a front she needed to keep up. She knew that her mother kept ties with people here at Hogwarts to keep an eye on her. She stared at him for a moment before slowly lowering her wand, “What in the world are you even doing up there?” 

“I come in peace,” he held his hands up in faux surrender, offering the girl beneath him his best attempt at a reassuring smile (he could manage them effortlessly when he was with friends, but he struggled with the simplest things around other people). He shrugged at her question and nodded his head in the direction of the sunset, “Just admiring the view. The schools so beautiful, I try not to take it for granted.”
