Northeast Beasts
Northeast Box Drop Ins
Recently, I’ve had the privilege of visiting the great northeast. I love this region of the US, especially because of all the old architecture, coastal cities, greenery of VT, ME, and upstate NY, and awesome crossfit boxes. In our recent travels I have been lucky enough to visit (and revisit) some of my favorite boxes. Here’s a quick breakdown of two of my favorites.
Crossfit Fenway
Crossfit Fenway, just like its name would indicate, is located directly next to Fenway Park. A beautiful location, a large door that opens to the busy streets of Boston, a wall dedicated to other boxes, and coaches that are attentive and loaded with accomplishments and accolades. They’ve sent a team to the games, coached at the games, worked at the games, and continue to put out quality, competitive athletes, while still being open and accommodating to beginners. The coaches I worked with, Sam and Eric, not only remembered me from my earlier visits, but, immediately asked how I’ve been, how I finished in the Open, and congratulated me on the band’s recent success. They care. They have a honest interest in their athletes, and it shows. They’re programming is done in house and is based on well planned cycles. Always a pleasure and filled with friendly members, taking the time to introduce themselves and ask about myself before starting class. Break the ice. Ideal for anyone dropping in, beginner, or advanced athletes.
Crossfit South Philly / Fearless Athletics
Philly is filled with boxes. It’s a city of character, charisma, and culture. I love it. Crossfit South Philly is a great representation of their city. It’s diverse, filled with sunshine, open to people of all shapes and sizes and has just enough hard nosed grit in the coaching to make you want to get better. Every time I drop in here, I meet and befriend new members. The box is spacious, very clean and extremely well equipped.
My last drop in experience featured a large class WOD, a 1 on 1 personal intro course, and afterwords, a very fun, interactive WOD between the coaches and competitors with rules (or lack there of) described as “full contact”. Another trait I love about this box, it’s stocked FULL with Steve’s Paleo Goods, coconut water, and other healthy, paleo snacks. A huge plus. I strongly recommend trying this box out.
CrossFit Green Bay.
It was a cold, snowy day in Green Bay, WI. I think most days are, haha. I had already used my Box Finder App to locate the nearest box to the day’s venue, CrossFit Green Bay. (GREAT app, fixing a lot of bugs and a nice reference point for travelers.) They had recently moved, so we of course went to the wrong location first. But, the short trip was still more than worth the wait. Loaded with an incredible coaching staff of all shapes, sizes and personalities. I was immediately greeted with smiles and conversation during my drop in for an open gym session. The box is large with two rooms, joined by a large opening. The walls are painted by a local artist demonstrating diverse and colorful, graffiti style art. Awesome support of local art!
Right away I was asked what I had planned for the day and if I wanted any help or coaching. This is rare as most coaches don’t spend much time with drop-ins, especially at an open gym. I had only snatched once, prior to this, so I took advantage of the opportunity. The box owner, Grant Soletski, had mentioned he was in a hurry and happy to have us, but, then proceeded to stay an extra 15 minutes to work with me 1 on 1 with my snatch technique. Grant is strong, experienced, and an accomplished athlete. Don’t let his firm, stiff impression fool you. He’s loaded with sarcasm and tough love. When he finally did have to leave, he made sure I was in great hands first, handing me off to coach Alex Peterson. Alex was easy to work with, patient and very attentive to details. We worked together 1 on 1 for another 20 minutes. Post snatching, I wanted to get a WOD in, break a sweat, and visit a couple skill movements. I met up with coach Justin Peterson, who had just finished starting strength lifts and a WOD with C&J’s and box jumps. We discussed registering for the Open, my first, and what I wanted to work on. We put together a sprinter WOD of MU’s, T2B, and HSPU’s. He partook, even after his already rigorous day of training, just to push me. He more than pushed me, and I was thankful for his company. Justin was patient, capable of coaching any level athlete. He was educated on all the movements and a strong athlete, himself. After our WOD, Justin handed me a shirt to better remember my CFGB experience, though how could I forget it. I can’t say enough great about these coaches and this great box.
GOOD LUCK AT THE GAMES!!
CFGB also hosts an annual competition, more information about the event, the box, and it’s staff at www.gbcrossfit.com

The 2014 Open... My way.
My job takes me all over the world, literally. It also takes me places at times that are sometimes amazing and exciting, and other times, at the least convenient times. This year was my first trial with the CrossFit Games Open Competition. I was so excited, nervous, anxious, and eager. I haven't had the opportunity to compete in a true, organized sport, since rugby, back in Grand Rapids. As the Open approached, I knew I would face struggles no other athletes would - like traveling, every single day. Making it very challenging not only keep a good diet, train and mobilize daily, schedule rest, but, to complete the Open, in general. I would have to find a box, near my whereabouts, for each individual workout. Talk about high stress and extra work, haha. Nonetheless, I vowed myself to make no excuses, do my best, and finish every WOD of the Open. My personal goal was to finish in the top 200 of my region, The Central East.
14.1 took place in Johnson City, TN at CrossFit Johnson City. This is basically my "home away from home box" so although I was nervous, it was about as ideal as it could get. I competed alongside CFJC top athletes immediately following the 14.1 announcement and streamed head-to-head of Fisher and Hendren. My adrenaline was pumping, heart racing and so many eyes, strangers' eyes, watching me. This was it... 12 minutes later, I was alive, sweating heavily, and passing out/accepting fist bumps and high fives. I had completed my first Open WOD. (Two days later, I would redo 14.1 at CFJC to better my score.)
14.2 was the day before the band would depart for our first ever European tour. We were in the NYC/NJ area and I needed to find a place to drop in to complete this OHS+c2b monster. Luckily, there is no shortage of boxes in this area, and, I had dropped into CrossFit Hoboken prior, making it an ideal candidate. I contacted them via email, and they were happy to have me back. They offered a coach/judge for me, and allowed me to do the WOD basically at my convenience. The judge plugged in her phone for some background jams and grabbed her clip board as I set up my phone for filming. The countdown began, as I grabbed the barbell and thrusted 95lbs overhead. 14.2 had begun. Approximately 15minutes later, it was over, leaving me exhausted, weak, and with blood covered hands. Another WOD in the books.
14.3 is when the Open really started to get interesting. I had landed in Europe, for my first time touring the continent. I was overwhelmed with language, sites, touring and band needs, and trying to "plan" my next WOD. I looked ahead to see where we would be, on which days, and where I had the best chance to walk/run to a nearby box to complete 14.3. First, I got the chance to drop into an European CrossFit box at CrossFit MGW. It had been open for only a few days prior to my drop in, but it was already well equipped and beautiful. The coach was an ex-body builder and was completely shredded. I was greeted with a smile and slow paced conversation, as the two coaches did their best to accommodate my english only capabilities. I programmed myself a workout for the open gym hours and tried to prepare for 14.3. My next drop in was to complete 14.3, at CrossFit Vienna Starship. A great box, with a very cool layout. They had a facility, wish all the necessary equipment and space, but, just outside was a sort of concrete space, surrounded by buildings, where you could WOD outdoors. I loved it. I walked to the box cold, never having the chance to reach out to them. The coach was extremely polite and excited to have me. I explained my situation, and that I merely wanted to complete 14.3. Not only was he more than happy to accommodate my requests, he volunteered to judge my performance! I set up my deadlift station as he finished his class. We brought a clock outside and got everything set up, as most of his class stayed to watch me. We synced my phone with a jam box, cranked Sevendust, and hammered out 14.3. Three down. Two to go.
14.4 was a monster, chipper. I was extremely pleased having the opportunity to drop in to train at CrossFit Stuttgart, between 14.3 and 14.4. It was nearly 4 miles from our bus, but, I made no excuses, made the trek, and trained hard. CFS was located right downtown in a small studio and had GREAT equipment. As I spoke with a coach and warmed up for Open gym (that they had opened JUST for me), we were greeted by another young coach, who volunteered to WOD with me, even though he had already done so that morning. Just having someone to compete with is such a great advantage to training alone, at least for me. I was so happy and felt great. Much love to those guys! I was lucky enough to have a show in Wiesbaden, with the day off there, the day before the show. As soon as we parked, I hunted down the nearest box. CrossFit Wiesbaden was a short mile away, and was exactly what I was looking for. Coach Marcus welcomed me in, welcomed me to Open gym, classes and again offered to judge me. It was a dream scenario. I mobilized and prepped that first night, then battled the giant chipper the next. 14.4 was in the books, but, not finished. I need to better my score. Searching frantically for when I might get another chance, coach Marcus came to my rescue and got me a slot in Cologne, the very next day, at CrossFit Am Dom. Am Dom is a Crossfit "space" located inside a standard studio gym. So, to say I turned some heads was an understatement. I went in with a better plan, bettered my score, and moved my focus to 14.5. The final WOD.
14.5 was coincidentally the same weekend as our last week spent touring Europe. Everything was coming to an end all at once. So much pressure, anxiety, excitement and so my NEW* was about to end, allowing me time to relax. But first, 14.5. This time around, I wasn't so lucky, to get a drop in before the final WOD. I had spent the week training and mobilizing entirely on my own, with the very limited tools and space I had with me on the road. Finally, I got my chance at 14.5 at my first UK box, at CrossFit Avon of Bristol. I arrived hours early to prepare. CrossFit Avon has two separate rooms, which allowed me to prep, train, strategize and mobilize, while they finished up their class. They had all taken on 14.5 one day previous, so today, I would again, be going solo. A great box with very fun and friendly coach James Grogan coached me, judged me, and encouraged me throughout the WOD, along with 5-7 other members, staying after their class strictly for moral support. I needed it, 14.5 was a killer. 11minutes later. I had completed my first CrossFit Games Open.
This journey lead me to so many great people, coaches, members, boxes, and experiences. I want to personally thank you all again, I literally couldn't have done it without you, your help and your hospitality. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.
4th Quarter CrossFit. New Orleans LA
4th Quarter CrossFit is located inside of a gym. In a strip mall. As I approached the address I couldn't help but notice these two facts. I entered the doorway to what looked to be a "globo-gym". About 20 treadmills, stationary bikes, towels at the front desk, and from what I could see, no free weights... at all. The woman behind the table greeted me with a smile and excitedly showed me around.
4th Quarter CrossFit is indeed, located INSIDE Velocity Sports Performance. The mentioned treadmill and "cardio" space, was designed to keep parents busy while their son/daughter was trained in the back*. The facility spanned on, they offer an MMA gym, a locker room, a free weight/dumbbell area, and in very back of the facility, their pride and joy. In the back of VSP, is an area providing oly platforms, GREAT oly bars, oly bumpers, turf, an indoor track, kettlebells, squat racks, and so much more. It's quite the diamond in the rough. I entered the back room and was introduced to a few of the coaches. To be a coach at VSP, you must have a degree in a related fitness field (such as exercise science, sports medicine, etc) in addition to any certifications (personal training, CrossFit L1, etc). A pretty impressive stat.
The back room is used for personal training, crossfit, and sports performance training (as VSP is well known for preparing athletes for events such as the NFL combine.) While in the back room, I trained alongside coach Jared Mata. Jared grew up a baseball player and had gotten into Oly lifting a couple years ago. He is now L1 certified and frequently implements crossfit into his training as well as personal training for others.
4th Quarter does in-house programming as well, as Jared and I tackled a 3RFT:
*****CASH IN****** 25 pull-ups
- 25 DUs
- 25yrd Farmers walk
- 50 DUs
- 50yrd FW
- 25DU's
- 25yrd FM
*****CASH OUT****** 25 pull-ups
A fun WOD with movements I hadn't done in a while. This WOD, of course, only took place after my Oly session, which I was coached through. Jared did a great job of helping me out on technique and being supportive of me, during my lifts.
4th Quarter CrossFit was a very pleasant surprise and goes on to prove and looks aren't everything. Dont' judge a "box" by it's cover. I had a great time and will definitely be back. Go check this place out!!

CrossFit Cypress. Houston TX
About a week before arriving to Houston, I was approached online, via twitter, to come drop into CrossFit Cypress. I was especially excited because the invite was by Regional athlete Jared Astle. Jared had just returned "home", fresh off an impressive 8th place finish at the South Central Regionals. Jared is also a coach at CF Cypress and teaches and programs for their competitors class.
During the 30minute commute to CrossFit Cypress, we discussed what kind of punishment we wanted to cast upon ourselves, today. We made suggestions and joked, talking about other insane athletes at regionals, the dedication and skill it requires to succeed at crossfit and life; conversation was not scarce, nor forced. We agreed to use my Catalyst programing as a strength/skill and would build from there.
We entered the box, ready to work. Jared lead myself and 3 others through a series of active stretches and dynamic movements. Warm-up is a large part of his emphasis. 15 minutes later, we moved onto some oly work, cleans and snatch balance. Jared took part in the movements, while coaching and correcting us as we went. He was especially patient and helpful to the greenest of us in the class, working 1-on-1 and making sure to demonstrate good technique and simultaneously building confidence in the inexperienced athlete. Confidence is key.
After the oly work, we went at it.... King Kong, straight into Fran. Jared wrapped it all up with 30 MU's for time. A great coach and a gifted athlete.
The box was amazing. two rooms, joined by a large doorway/opening, a full Rogue rig, equipped with wall ball targets. They had ergs, nice barbells, bumpers galore, wall balls, kettlebells and an impressive selection of dumbbells - great for accessory work. There are restrooms, a fridge for use, and was surprisingly clean. A pleasure to WOD in. CrossFit Cypress has proven itself as a well coached box with at least a couple exceptional athletes, however, the are built on training your average athlete, set on being healthy and changing lives. A box with a true open door policy and great morals. I loved this box and my experience with Jared. It was a pleasure and an honor. Check out more here:

CrossFit Deep. Dallas TX.
I had a day off in Dallas with a good friend, willing to taxi me to a box of my choice. The selection process was a difficult, I'd only dropping into a Dallas box once, and the experience wasn't great. (I won't mention where this was...) But, when i showed up to CrossFit Deep, I was thrilled with my decision.
Deep is DEEP in various aspects, coaches, experience, athletes, equipment, resources, amenities, and reasons to return. CrossFit Deep is divided into two rooms, one is specific to oly lifting. It's still rather large, equipped with kilo weights, lots of great bars, oly platforms, a rig, and numerous free standing racks. It's other room, is set up more directly for WODs (though both tasks can be done in either room). The WOD room has a very large rig set up. the weights are lbs, there are ergs, barbells, kettlebells, wall balls, and plenty of floor space. Yet, even with all the square footage, Deep somehow maintains a very humble "box" vibe. I loved it. The facility is also equipped with lockers, showers, and offers crossfit kids... what does this box NOT do ?!?!
As I entered the Oly room to begin my Catalyst training, I was greeted by member Russell Aldridge. Russell was also lifting, and still found time to share back stories, chit chat, and offer pointers and advice on my lifts. At one point he even came across the room to show me some hands on 1-on-1 help with my jerk. Developing his passion for CrossFit while in the Navy, Russell has developed into not only a very well rounded athlete, but, a great person. His personal communication skills are great and he never once made me feel incompetent or spoke down to me. A class act. As we shared stories and practices, I notices another athlete enter. A man of about 170lbs, who was front squatting. As i glanced over periodically, i noticed that the weight on his barbell had quickly eclipsed 300lbs and was showing no sign of slowing down. Eric, in mid sentence, says, "I learned everything I know from him." Enter coach Spencer Arnold. Spencer is a oly PHENOM. Offering AO experience and loads of ability/knowledge. Just another amazing asset of CrossFit Deep.
This box truly has it all, a GREAT facility, specialized coaches, in house programming, amazing people and coaches who truly care about their athletes, and ANY one in their box, for that matter. I had a truly great experience and definitely look forward to returning for a WOD in the future. Best wishes to a great box with great people.

CrossFit Matters. Kansas City. MO.
Today, the day of RockFest 2014, I was invited to drop into CrossFit Matters for a 9am WOD. 9am on a saturday is ambitious, usually an open gym or a small class. That was not the case at this morning. At least 20 of us gathered in for a high MetCon WOD, lead by owner Jim Caskey. The box is nothing special to look at, it’s equipped with a rig, plenty of barbells, Rogue bumpers, sleds, concept II rowers… the usual. Where CrossFit Matters shines, is in its coaches and members. I was greeted with smiles and high-fives as i made my rounds. Owner/coach, Jim, made sure everyone knew who I was, my name, where I was from, mentioning it to members personally and extending continued welcomes throughout our group warm up. So let’s talk about the programming.
Jim has started CrossFit in ‘09 in his garage, and become an affiliate in 2010. His background is that of track, triathlons, iron-man, cycling and that similar. He has a very competitive spirit and loves crossfit, almost as much as he loves his members. Jim does all his own programming. He was studied major programmers and boxes, such as Competitor’s WOD, Outlaw, etc… and attended camps such as the well respected Pendlay seminar. All this describes Jim’s knowledge and experience, but, doesn’t even begin to tell you the kind of person Jim is. He LOVES his members. His dream is to create a “fit community”. It feels like a family. The constant exchange of laughs, fist-bumps, and “great job, keep going” never stops. He puts his members first and himself and his personal training at a very distant second.
Each day consists of a group “warm up”, then “stretching, some dynamic and some skill. He personally favors Spealer rolls and barbell warm up - a progression of deadlift, high pulls, powercleans, squat cleans, strict press, push press, push and split jerk. Safety is key. His priority is keeping athletes healthy, and it shows. Warming up is key, activating muscle groups and preparing the body AND mind for what the upcoming WOD will bring.
Everyone at CrossFit Matters treated me like family. A family that is strong, supportive, and very fun-loving. I highly recommend this box, this coach, this experience to anyone and everyone, new or highly advanced. Thank you so much for the WOD and amazing experience. A 9am WOD has never been so fun.
Memorial Day MURPH
Memorial Day Murph
Today we are in Albuquerque, NW. The sun is shining, the weather is gorgeous and it’s Memorial Day. Memorial Day, for those who may not know, is a day for honoring the fallen soldiers who lost their life defending our country and it’s freedom. It was originally created for only the soldiers of the Civil War, but, was later opened to soldiers of all wars, lost in the line of battle. Thank you for your service. I send you my love, respect, and wish you a peaceful rest.
In honor of Memorial Day, and the soldiers lost, a great deal of people pay there homage by completing the Hero WOD known as Murph. Some of these “competitors” are crossfit athletes, some are service men/women, some are totally average joes and janes looking to pay tribute. (I’ve attached a link below describing the story of “Murph”)
Murph is a Hero WOD that consists of:
Run 1 mile
(divided into any order - the pullups, pushups, squats)
100 pull-ups
200 push-ups
300 squats
Run 1 mile
It is a long, grueling workout. If considering this feat, hydrate, warm up, and post stretch!!!
For my Memorial Day Murph, I dropped into Sandia CrossFit in Albaquerque. Some of the things I noticed immediately was the large class sizes, the 10 and 11am class had 20 plus participating in Murph, today. What a great honor; the box was also predominately young, with members mostly 25-30, and the atmosphere reflected this. Lots of smiles, laugh, encouraging words, and high fives. It was FUN to say the least. The box was opened back in 2011 by Matt Biggs, a former US Marine in the Delta Company, this box is a well oiled machine of fitness business. They constantly hold events and get togethers, encouraging the family community and embracing all that the CrossFit world has to offer. The box is well outfitted with a large rig, rowers, kettlebells, quality wall balls, and (mostly) Again Faster plates and bars.
Programming is predominantly done by coach Zach Gold. Having completed his exercise science degree, Zach is also a self-proclaimed fitness and comic book nerd. This no doubt plays into his great and fun-loving attitude. He admits to programming his own WODs, as well as pulling from some of his favorites such as Outlaw and Competitors WOD.
Sandia CrossFit is a great box, with fun coaches, and extremely supportive members. I shook hands and made acquaintance quickly and easily with 10+ members. Thanks for such an enjoyable experience.

Denver. Lodo. Community.
Colorado may very well be my favorite land-locked state. So much about it, Denver specifically, appeal to me. The mountains, the infinite amount of hiking trails, crossfit boxes, rapid rivers, ski slopes and craft breweries makes this city tough to top. It has such a unique, refreshing vibe to it. The people are friendly, outdoorsy, hipster at times, and seem to have a true appreciation for life. The quality of living here just seems far above the average. The city is loaded with local eats, delicious drink, a committed sports fan base, and numerous GREAT live music venues.
Today, for my daily drop-in/WOD experience, I visited CrossFit Lodo. I had originally read about Lodo in Men’s Health, ranking it the #10 box in the country. Lodo grabbed my interest immediately. I approached the coach, sitting with the garage door open, dog at his side, reading from an ipad. I felt an immediate connection with the coach. He was friendly, greeted me with a smile and kisses from his black lab. We dove into far more than small talk, sharing crossfit stories, talking about community, coaching, drop ins, trail running, and the amazing history of CrossFit Lodo. Lodo offers Open Gym all day, while having scheduled classes on and off in the same facility (which is two rooms, joined by an open doorway.) Each of the rooms has it’s own name, the WOD room called the Annex, and the “oly room” is referred to as the “Stables”, why? because the very building occupied by Lodo was once a station to the Pony Express - the “Stables” used to literally be stables. Awesome. The facility is well lit, very friendly, but, has a great “box” vibe. It’s a little grungy, without being dirty. It’s filled with history and rich with character.
CF Lodo is owned by Ryan Anderson. A crossfitter with over four years experience. Ryan came over immediately and welcomed me. Making me feel comfortable and right at home. There was no awkward shunning me as a step child, drop in. We exchanged stories and interests. We discussed the BOOMING CrossFit world of Denver and how they stay alive. We discussed the libertarian approach of HQ, and the pros and cons it brings… it was great. Their members treated me as one of their own, shaking hands and exchanging training tips and success stories. We never stop being students, it’s a beautiful thing about life.
Programming at Lodo is done in house, and with 250+ members, they’re constantly implementing new movements to keep you on your toes. Today’s WOD involved a warm up, strength, and metcon. A format I personally favor. I feel it’s important to warm up the body and prepare it for the specific lifts and necessary techniques of the day’s metcon.
Next time you’re in Denver, stop by CrossFit Lodo. They’ll treat you like family, tell you where the best running trails are, and have you leaving with a smile and the confirmation of a new friendship; not to mention the accomplishment of a great WOD. CrossFit Lodo is community at it’s best. It’s what CrossFit is all about.

CrossFit JOMO
Stopping back in Joplin, MO area for Pop Evil means a couple things… an awesome crowd, an awesome time, at a smaller than preferred venue, haha. It’s usually an insane sold out crowd, packed like sardines into a little venue. Thanks for continuing to come out and support! With that said, I was excited to get my first JOMO drop in, so it seemed like a no-brainer that my first drop in, in the area would be at CrossFit JOMO. I was very happy with my decision.
Coach and Justin Olds let us in the door and immediately greeted me with smiles and handshakes. He explained how even though he’s born and raised in MO, he’s a UofM fan - “Hail!!” This lead to a short conversation about Pop Evil’s contribution to the university with our song “In the Big House.” Justin was excited to have us and we were happy to be there. (We being Matt and I).
CrossFit JOMO, like many boxes, is a unique one…. it has a full size basketball court. Haha. It seems to be taken over a large scale gymnasium to now be filled with a full length wall rig, laid oly platforms, bumpers, ergs, and barbells. The square footage is pretty massive, which is good, because there were 20 of us in the box on what Justin called a “really slow day.” Coach Olds background consists of years of personal training, powerlifting, and athletic training. He now prides himself in being a “head coach.” He makes special efforts in rehabilitation, programming, motivating, and “coaching” beginners. It’s obvious his passion for teaching and competing. No rep or PR goes unnoticed. A great motivator and one of those people you just want to be around.
Coach Olds allowed me to come in a little early and work on my Catalyst program, before jumping into his class WOD. Their class was rounding out their strength week, completing an EMOM of heavy push presses, strict chin ups, and deadlifts. He paid special attention to each and every member, while other coaches who partook in the WOD also helped members, including myself, with form and spotting. A very friendly atmosphere. It’s no surprise to me why people love and obsess of crossfit so much. The community and support system of so many members and boxes is unbelievable. So unique and rare. It’s contagious to say the least.
The box is equipped with restrooms, refrigerator, and all the CrossFit toys you could want - including massive tires. A true Box. A large box, but, a Box.
Thanks again to CrossFit JOMO for allowing me to drop in, and if you’re in the JOMO/Carthage area, GO SEE THEM. Justin is a great guy and will welcome you with open arms.
