Marilyn Monroe on the set of the film Some Like it Hot, 1958
Born on this day 100 years ago: nonpareil of celestial American Love Goddesses, the sublime Marilyn Monroe (née Norma Jeane Mortenson, 1 June 1926 – 4 August 1962)! For anyone London-based, the British Film Institute is marking the centenary of Monroe’s birth with a season of her films spread over June – July 2026. (Seeing the lush Technicolor likes of How to Marry a Millionaire and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes on the big screen sounds divoon!). Pictured: pensive shot of Monroe (as Sugar Kane, perhaps her definitive role and performance) during production of Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (1959).
