The way that even in the pilot Morse walks around like the human embodiment of an open wound just. augh. And he doesn't even know it but every moment where he's even a little bit sincere, he's just bleeding. His softness of manner when he meets Thursday for the first time and he's so carefully testing the waters to see if he's found someone who will believe in him. When he tries to describe his mother to Rosalind and stammers through voicing his raw fear of forgetting her. When he is shot down by condescending superiors and bites back like a dog that's been kicked too many times. Even with his hackles raised, you can see the bruises everywhere.
